New Mexico´s texting while driving
law goes into effect on Tuesday

Daily Times (NM), by Joshua Kellogg

FARMINGTON — New Mexico drivers will be prohibited from using cellphones to send or view text messages while driving when a new law to prevent distracted driving goes into effect on Tuesday. In March, Gov. Susana Martinez signed Senate Bill 19, which penalizes drivers for texting while their vehicles are in motion. The bill becomes law on Tuesday. Drivers cited for texting while driving face a $25 fine for the first violation and $50 for subsequent violations. The law states a person shall not read or view a text or manually type on a mobile communication device for any purpose

Comments:
Its about time. The only problem I have with this law is the penalties are way to lenient, the fines ought to be in the hundreds.

I agree that the fines should be higher. However, the lawsuit awards will make up for it....

Meaningless. People text all the time here in FL and it´s already outlawed. Better to ticket drivers for inattention. ( for any reason)

If any one for any reason causes a wreck they should be charged with attempted manslaughter. If anyone dies, the change it to manslaughter. How stupid to call them accidents when there is nothing accidental about them. They are deliberate. Also there is no excuse for not keeping a car in safe driving condition. If you can´t afford to fix it then park it rather than running the risk of injuring or killing someone.

Of the many stunning revelations to emerge out of the wreckage of Mosul on Wednesday — 500,000 fleeing residents, thousands of freed prisoners, unconfirmed reports of “mass beheadings” — the one that may have the most lasting impact as Iraq descends into a possible civil war is that the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria just got extremely rich. As insurgents rolled past Iraq’s second largest city, an oil hub at the vital intersection of Syria, Iraq and Turkey, and into Tikrit, several gunmen stopped at Mosul’s central bank. An incredible amount of cash was reportedly on hand, and the

A British priest who picked up a painting for $670 is likely to see it sold at auction for as much as $839,000. The BBC reported that Father Jamie MacLeod found Anthony Van Dyck’s Flemish Baroque work 12 years ago in a Cheshire antique shop. It was only after he took it to TV program “Antiques Roadshow” that he was told it could be worth a small fortune. Father MacLeod, who runs a retreat in the Peak District, told the BBC he was "not being greedy" by selling the painting.

Obama’s Enforcer: Eric Holder’s

The evidence is clear that Eric Holder and his political subordinates have politicized the Justice Department to an unprecedented degree — “worse than John Mitchell under Richard Nixon” one former Justice Department lawyer told the authors. This is quite a criticism given that many DOJ veterans believe that the Department reached its nadir under Mitchell. But Mitchell seems like an amateur by comparison to how Holder has corrupted the law enforcement duties of the Justice Department to carry out the political objectives of Barack Obama and to implement his radical ideology.

FARMINGTON — Many aspects of the Affordable Health Care Act are still mysteries to local government officials, but it is certain, they say, that employee healthcare costs will grow. "The fact is," Farmington City Manager Rob Mayes said, "our costs have gone up for providing healthcare for our employees." President Barack Obama´s administration championed the Affordable Health Care Act, known as Obamacare, and it was passed in March 2010. The administration regularly updates the act, changing policies, increasing fees and confusing providers, local government officials said. Because of that, they say, tracking indirect and long-term healthcare expenses is not yet

A federal judge put Michigan Rep. John Conyers, one of the longest-serving Democrats in Congress, on the primary ballot Friday hours after state election officials declared him ineligible. Earlier Friday, Conyers lost his appeal to get on the August primary ballot after state officials found problems with his nominating petitions. Hours later, Detroit federal Judge Matthew Leitman issued an injunction ordering that Conyers´ name be placed on the ballot. The first decision, from the Secretary of State´s office, determined that Detroit-area officials were correct in keeping Conyers off the ballot, since he "failed to

A government-contracted security force threatened to arrest doctors and nurses if they divulged any information about the contagion threat at a refugee camp housing illegal alien children at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, sources say. In spite of the threat, several former camp workers broke their confidentiality agreements and shared exclusive details with me about the dangerous conditions at the camp. They said taxpayers deserve to know about the contagious diseases and the risks the children pose to Americans. I have agreed to not to disclose their identities because they fear retaliation and prosecution.

Two Texans may be vying for the Republican presidential nomination in 2016: Sen. Ted Cruz and Governor Rick Perry. Cruz overwhelmingly won the Texas GOP 2016 convention straw poll, confirming his position as the conservative grassroots candidate. He fires up crowds unlike any other politician today, and the power of motivating voters and volunteers should not be underestimated. But will he run in 2016? The signs point to yes. One of his staffers left his office to start a committee to draft him into running. He has visited the early states and spent many weekends during his first 18 months in office raising

Reverend Steve Fielder, a pastor at the First Union Missionary Baptist Church in Meridian, Mississippi, has accused Mississippi Senator Thad Cochran’s campaign of engaging in an illegal and criminal campaign scheme to purchase the votes of black community members. The suspect votes were cast during Cochran’s successful effort to defeat Tea Party challenger Chris McDaniel in the Mississippi Republican primary run-off held last week. If true, such an action would be clearly illegal under both federal law and Mississippi statutes, specifically MS Code 97-13-1; MS Code 97-13-3 (2013) (Federal Code 18 U.S.C. 597, U.S.C. 1973i(c)), each punishable by a prison
