Thousands go without water as
Detroit cuts service for nonpayment

Los Angeles Times, by Alana Semuels

It has been six weeks since the city turned off Nicole Hill´s water. Dirty dishes are piled in the sink of her crowded kitchen, where the yellow-and-green linoleum floor is soiled and sticky. A small garbage can is filled with water from a neighbor, while a bigger one sits outside in the yard, where she hopes it will collect some rain. She´s developed an intricate recycling system of washing the dishes, cleaning the floor and flushing the toilet with the same water. "It´s frightening, because you think this is something that only happens somewhere like Africa," said Hill, a single mother

At no point does Ms. Hill observe the following:
"You know, we keep electing these idiots that outlaw the conditions for job creation, make people less independent and mismanage things that they control. All of that money wasted, and none of it helped make us self-sufficient or successful."

An apartment dweller with a $5.7k deficit? Paying $200mo from the get go? I suspect she is paying for the whole building.
This is an example of cherry picking for a story.

The legacy of the race baiting "civil rights" movement. Maybe they can rename another street after Martin King or Rosa Parks wile actual people deal with deprivation that would have been unimaginable in 1960 in Detroit.

I´m surprised the building can remain occupied.

Where we live, if the water is shut off the building must be vacated.

I don´t know if that is an Illinois law our just our county.

Also...water is included in the rent of any apartment here as well. House rentals are different but most landlords include the water / garbage removal, because it is a real hassle for the owner if it is shut off. Rules regarding sanitation and sewage disposal bring big fines. Most tenants are on their own for heat and electricity.

I did read that Detroit gets some type of government assistance for water (Don´t remember if it was the city or the individual)and the water rates are very high.

I wonder if the high rates are because of a subsidy? Student loans anyone?

However, "nearly half the city´s 300,000 or so accounts are past due." So the problem isn´t just some mix-up, and it isn´t just Ms. Hill. What kind of city and what kind of culture leads to half of all the water bills in the city being past due...?

Let´s start with the supposed $200 per month water bill. Really? How can that be? A good reporter would have looked into that and also reported what an average water bill/usage rate is. How many gallons of water does $200 a month buy? Is that a typical bill?

The first thing I noticed when I opened this story is Ms Hill´s tattoos, her acrylic fingernails and her fancy hair or wig. She may have a $200 water bill, but she could have used some of the money spent on those luxuries, to pay on it on a regular basis. We have very ridiculous water and sewage bills in rural Minnesota. However, our towns are small, and any sewage or water upgrades are added to the monthly bills. Ours is about $125 a month, more in summer....and often more than our electric or gas bill. Be that as it may...these people went a terribly long time, YEARS without paying these bills. Now it´s time to pay up or do without. Not feeling too sorry for Ms Hill or the others in this situation. They brought it on themselves.

She probably doesn´t wash dishes anyway, or clean the floor, or even know how to flush the toilet. She needs more taxpayer money to accomplish those herculean tasks so she can do what she always does - spend it on booze, pot, and personal luxuries. Maybe even take a vacation. That´s what this sob story is all about.

I have no sympathy at all. It´s hell to try to run a household without water and most of us avoid that situation by paying the water bill. It´s obvious that, in Detroit and probably some other places, everyone knew (or at least thought) nothing would happen, there was no need to pay a water bill.

Surprise!
