New York’s Common Core-Aligned
Standardized Tests Are PAINFULLY
Stupid And Awful

Daily Caller, by Eric Owens

Original Article

Posted By:JoniTx, 6/29/2014 11:23:48 AM

Well America, the Common Core-aligned standardized tests that Common Core supporters have zealously trumpeted as college-related and so dramatically superior to all previous standardized tests are finally starting to trickle out for public consumption. New York is one state that has released some Common Core tests. The tests for elementary school kids remain strictly guarded. However, other tests including the Common Core Algebra Regents test which eighth- and ninth-grade students took in early June – and must pass at some point to get high school degrees – are now available online. The algebra test is shockingly awful.

Common Core is Obama’s attempt to provide an equally mediocre education to everyone and “level the playing field”. The result will be the intentional underachievers STILL dropping out, and the achievers and overachievers getting a much worse education. Fight Common Core with all your might.

I´ve been out of school too long to even understand the questions. Most jobs do not require any of this so why are we attempting to teach all kids this gibberish? Give the kids a good high school education so they are employable and have a separate track for those who intend to go to college for degrees that require the higher math studies.

these tests are designed to have the student fail. each test cost $30. everytime a student fails the test it has to be retaken. so if a student takes the test 2 -3 or 4 times...well that costs lots of money. and I don´t know who pays for the retesting. the student or the taxpayer, certainly NOT the teachers union

Common Core seems to me as being ridiculous. Recently, I had a humorous email about common cores´ math. It goes such as this, I have 2 pencils, Mary has 7 apples. How many pancakes will fit on my roof? . . . The answer is, Purple, aliens don´t wear hats. Nonsensical, but so is common core. It´s all about money.

Well, I see what they´re trying to do, and I don´t disapprove of it on its face, but a lot of basic math should first be learned pretty much by traditional, mechanical, mostly rote means.

The more complex approaches probably do add value, but they also require more work to completely explain and comprehend - there ain´t no such thing as a free lunch.

And it may be hard to even find instructors who can tell the new ways coherently - the video in this article is probably out of context but looks like gibberish. Reconciling the magnitude of AN ANSWER is a good, advanced, valid technique, but using it to GET to the answer in the first place is perverse and much harder than simply doing it right in the first place.

I believe Mr. Gates contributed Two Billion Dollars to get Common Core off the ground. Why do these elities want other people´s children to be trained to become robots?

#4,5,13—The problem with this exam is MATHEMATICAL stupidity and has nothing to do with liberal or conservative. There are plenty of smart liberal mathematicians who would also be appalled at this test. The trouble is that the test was obviously written by "educators" who know very little about mathematics.

#2 — Almost every university major requires at least this level of algebra, but it is true that most students don´t need to go to college to succeed in life and they waste their time and money doing so.

#3, 14 The idea that testers will profit from failing students is just paranoid crazy. School administrators want to pass students, even those who haven´t learned the material, and would quickly find a test publisher who would write an exam they could pass.

#8—New fangled? I´m told that the English pronunciation "eye-ther" resulted from George I using his native German pronunciation of ei as "eye" and it spread through 18th century England starting with the courtiers, but never spread across the Atlantic. It certainly isn´t "new fangled."

#9—I think you are pretty much right. I think this effort was sold as a way to have some minimal standards in the schools, but has been subverted by being placed in the hands of incompetents.

#13—I do not believe that becoming mathematically competent would make a student a "mind-numbed robot." However, this test would not insure much in the way of competence.

The criticisms made by the author of this article are basically right, but he is not a mathematician. (He confuses an equation with a function.) From a mathematician´s point of view, the exam is even worse than he says. For instance, Question 12, as stated, has infinitely many different correct answers. In the old New York Regents version, it would have only had one correct answer.

I’d never been to this church before, but I could see it from where I was, across from an old park, abandoned in the chilly September air. President Obama evidently has decided not to put a human face on the crisis unfolding at the U.S. southern border—not even his own. The White House said over and over again Monday that Obama will not travel to the border with Mexico despite flying to Texas this week to raise money for Democratic candidates there. It´s certainly in part a political decision, one meant to avoid taking ownership of a difficult issue on which the White House would prefer to share blame. (Snip) In other words, if Obama goes goes to the border, he owns the problem. If he doesn't, he's blasted for a lack of leadership.
