The saga of John Flentie: Platte County
man fights against his guardianship

Kansas City Star [Kansas City, MO], by Eric Adler*

Sunken into the plaid couch of his cinder-block room, John Flentie spends nearly every waking hour obsessed with obtaining his freedom. “I merely want to go home,” he says. At 73, the once-affluent Parkville resident is not a criminal inmate, nor is he an enemy combatant. Instead — to the extreme frustration of Flentie, his lawyer and a cadre of former high school classmates who for two years have been advocating for the release of a friend they insist is as capable and highly intelligent as always — Flentie is a ward of the state of Missouri. Since April 2012, he has been committed to various nursing homes under the guardianship

I am so afraid of this happening to us. Right now, my sister and I care for our mother, whose to say someone will disagree with how we care for her. My sister and I are both unmarried, no children, who will come for us when? The state should not have that much power, especially to take this man´s money.

With the ACA in place, it can happen before you know it. Your insurer will gladly pay to send a case manager to your home.

Guardians are sometimes the wives of doctors and lawyers and often own thrift shops (convenient). One cleaned out an elderly friend´s bank account and sold her stock. Who knows what happened to her furniture and the money she had hidden in her apartment. The guardian didn´t even inform the friend´s attorney that she took over, ignored her will, didn´t inform friends she later passed away.

Today, your primary care physician is not your trusted friend. Read what you sign and be careful what you say.

There is a special place in Hell for harming or stealing from vulnerable elderly people.

On the other hand, I think reporters are notorious for completely distorting reality to make a story.

There´s a darn good chance this man really should have a guardian, and the people in charge of his care could be honestly working in his best interests.

This man has to be locked up, they say. Meanwhile, the streets of every large city in this country are crawling with demented homeless people who are a danger to themselves and others--but they have a right to their freedom, say the lawyers, courts and government.

With the case of Justina Pelletier fresh in mind - her involuntary kidnapping by the Massachusetts Children´s protective service, Mr. Flentie´s case is most likely true. Elder abuse is rife and sadly there are eager beavers out there ever ready to insist that they know what´s best for someone else. His rights have definitely been trampled upon. I agree he needs help and am cheered to hear his old friends have become proactive in supporting his cause. As for poster #1, it is chilling that she sees a possibility of this happening in her life.
I feel sure that the L Dot community will band together to support her.

A sheriff´s department spokesman refutes claims by the Chris McDaniel camp that three staffers were let into the courthouse by "uniformed personnel" sometime after it closed late election night. Janis Lane, Scott Brewster, and Rob Chambers were found locked inside the Hinds County Courthouse early Wednesday morning. They allegedly gained access to the courthouse sometime shortly after 2 a.m., and when they realized they were locked in, they called Hinds County Republican Executive Chairman Pete Perry to ask for help. They were let out around 3:45 a.m. Brewster is a former coordinator of presidential candidate Newt Gingrich´s Mississippi operation and

As expected, the Seattle City Council this afternoon passed the historic $15-an-hour minimum-wage bill that Mayor Murray and the City has spent months hammering out. With all nine Council members in attendance (Councilmember Tom Rasmussen was late), the minimum wage bill was approved unanimously, even earning the endorsement of socialist Kshama Sawant by the time the dust settled. The vote followed the failed introduction of amendments favored by Sawant to quicken implementation of the bill (4-5), remove training wages (4-5), remove the tip credit (1-8), and speed-up the process for requiring big business

Washington -- Some conservatives unhappy with House Speaker John Boehner´s leadership are looking for a replacement, and recent moves by Texas Republican Jeb Hensarling are fueling speculation he wants Boehner´s job in the next Congress. Hensarling, who was part of Boehner´s leadership team two years ago but left to chair the House Financial Services Committee, gave an expansive speech last week hosted by Heritage Action for America, a group that frequently and publicly clashes with Boehner. Asked afterward if he was interested in running for speaker, Hensarling initially said he was "flattered," and said, "It´s not something

Glenn Beck has set up Mercury One Children and Family Border Relief Fund to help illegals coming into the United States. He’s already raised $600,000. Beck stated that Obama would not have to step in and ask for $3.7 billion if private charities would pick up the slack and give to the swarm of illegals crossing the border. Is he kidding? Do we really need more churches and non-profits enabling this blatant attack on America? Rich people and liberal elite billionaires have no skin in the game when it comes to the consequences of illegal immigration so what do they care? Both acknowledged Boehner’s gripe with the Obama administration had merit, but were skeptical of the lawsuit’s chances. However, they both also took on the alternative offered by former Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK), which was to impeach President Barack Obama. Both dismissed that course of action as well, with Brooks calling it “cloud cuckoo land.” Partial transcript as follows: WOODRUFF: So the Highway Trust
