Man flips drone fear on its head,

Washington Times, by Douglas Ernst

A California man decided to turn the fear that drones will be abused by law enforcement officials on its head by using the technology to monitor police behavior. “I don’t think it’s a substitute for a hand-held camera, but it’s definitely a complement,” Daniel Saulmon of Torrance told the Los Angeles Times. Mr. Saulmon said he has been filming police behavior with the technology for a month, typically monitoring DUI checkpoints to make sure police aren’t abusing their power. He added that he is careful not to run afoul of any laws while filming. “I have to use common sense with it,” Saulmon said. “It’s easy to fly.

Back in the 80s or early 90s I believe, the police in L.A. wanted to wear cameras on their person while handling calls. Unfortunately, the ACLU fought them in court and stopped them. More often than not, the police would be vindicated. That doesn´t mean that this guy shouldn´t be doing this. Police shouldn´t be worried about being viewed as they do their job.

Good, I´m all for it. Step up surveillance on police. Do it to democrat politicians too. They hate it when their own tactics are used against them.

Beirut - Fears continue to spread in Lebanon about the presence of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) after the Sunni militant group claimed responsibility for Wednesday’s attack on a central Beirut hotel, the third such attack in two weeks. The militant group has expanded its operations in both Syria and Iraq, giving rise to fears that it could also seek to start an insurgency against the Lebanese government at a time when the country still has no president. In a statement published on Friday, ISIS announced that a Saudi suicide bomber had attacked the Duroy Hotel in central Beirut. Three police officers were wounded in the attack.

(Snip) The danger has never been greater in West Africa as the worst Ebola outbreak on record continues its deadly sweep of jungles and cities, hopping national borders and frustrating hundreds of doctors who parachuted in to vanquish the disease but have so far failed. As of Thursday, the pandemic with a 90 percent mortality rate has killed more than 367 people and afflicted 635 more in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea, where it is believed to have begun. Barnes & Noble, the struggling bookseller, saw its shares jump 8% Wednesday after saying it will spin off its Nook digital book business. The Nook business, which produced digital readers that were a constant also-ran versus offerings from Amazon, Google and Apple, required heavy investments from the company that it was ill-prepared to afford. Shares are up $2.13, or 10%, to $22.69 on the news. Former presidential contender Newt Gingrich has found a similarity between former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and reality television starlet Kim Kardashian: Neither dances well in front of others. Two senior Veterans Affairs Department officials will be stepping down this week as a personnel overhaul continues in the wake of the resignation of former VA secretary Eric K. Shinseki. Will Gunn, who has served as VA general counsel since 2009, will be stepping down from a job he’s held since the start of the Obama administration. And Robert Jesse, currently the acting undersecretary for the Veterans Health Administration, will be stepping down and rejoining the department’s medical ranks. The forthcoming changes are according to two people familiar with the shakeup who were not authorized to speak publicly about them.

President Obama has quietly promised Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren complete support if she runs for president — a stinging rebuke to his nemesis Hillary Clinton, sources tell me. Publicly, Obama has remained noncommittal on the 2016 race, but privately he worries that Clinton would undo and undermine many of his policies. There’s also a personal animosity, especially with Bill Clinton, that dates from their tough race six years ago. A former Harvard law professor and administration aide, Warren would energize the left wing of the Democrat Party just as Obama did against Clinton in 2008. It goes by the name of Japanese knotweed, or Fallopia japonica. It presents a pleasing appearance to the eye: heart-shaped leaves, bamboo stems and pretty, little white-flower tassels.
