Barney Fife Meets Delta Force
National Review Online, by Charles C.W. Cooke

Nestled awkwardly among the usual guff, the outrage website Salon this week took a welcome flyer and accorded space to something genuinely alarming. “A SWAT team,” the headline screamed, “blew a hole in my 2-year-old son.” For once, this wasn’t hyperbole. The piece’s author, Alecia Phonesavanh, described what it felt like to be on the business end of an attack that was launched in error by police who believed a drug dealer to be living and operating in her house. They “threw a flashbang grenade inside,” she reported. It “landed in my son’s crib.” Now, her son is “covered in burns”

"We cannot continue to rely only on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives that we´ve set. We´ve got to have a civilian national security force that´s just as powerful, just as strong, just as well funded."

This is the Obamboozler´s new civilian military. Every day we get closer to being a Third World Communist nation.

We have already established a very effective surveillance state. Once that framework is in place it is a very short hop to a full fascist regime.

Louis Zamperini, triumphant
´Unbroken´ warrior, dies at 97

Louis Zamperini, the Olympic runner and World War II officer who survived a horrific plane crash, a seven-week journey across the Pacific in a raft, near starvation and unspeakable torture in Japanese POW camps, has died. He was 97. The cause of death was pneumonia, his family said in a statement from Universal Pictures, which is making a film adaptation of "Unbroken," Laura Hillenbrand´s bestselling chronicle about Zamperini´s life. "Having overcome insurmountable odds at every turn in his life, Olympic runner and World War II hero Louis Zamperini has never broken down from a challenge. Every Fourth of July, some Americans sit down to read the Declaration of Independence, reacquainting themselves with the nation’s founding charter exactly as it was signed by the Second Continental Congress in 1776. Or almost exactly? A scholar is now saying that the official transcript of the document produced by the National Archives and Records Administration contains a significant error — smack in the middle of the sentence beginning “We hold these truths to be self-evident,” no less. The error, according to Danielle Allen, a professor at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, N.J., concerns a period that appears right after

Is Obama acting like a former president?

It looks like we have officially entered the world of the post-Obama presidency. President Obama’s recent speeches and remarks make it obvious that he is not making any serious effort to govern or to drive world events. Except for covering the basics, he seems to have taken something like an early retirement. We can look back at his West Point speech, which may go down in history as his first post-presidency speech, and the endpoint of an Obama foreign policy. During that speech, the president’s reflections on his foreign policy consisted of making excuses and trying to explain himself instead

President Obama Doesn’t Understand

Once again, President Obama has announced that he’s going to bypass Congress in order to impose his own agenda through executive orders, this time on immigration. Does this guy even understand how representative government works? Here’s how it works: the representatives govern. In other words, Congress makes the laws. But Obama seems to think that when push comes to shove, the president is the only representative the people need. Thus, he declared that “America cannot wait” for Congress, as if he speaks for America, rather than the people actually elected by the people to represent them in something called—you guessed it—the House

Getting to 2017

The question I am asked more than any other these days is: How on earth are we going to make it to 2017? It’s black humor, really, ironic hyperbole; no one really believes the United States will suffer an existential catastrophe between now and the day Barack Obama leaves office. Certainly we’ve seen nothing to compare with the cascading horrors of 1979, for example—a year that began with gas rationing, proceeded to a nuclear-plant meltdown, saw 52 American diplomats taken hostage in Iran, and ended with the Soviets invading Afghanistan. The people I’ve talked to lived through 1979; they know this.

Hillary Clinton’s woes continue

Recent events have not been kind to Hillary Clinton, but she is far from an innocent victim in what surely is one of the worst revival tours in memory. Hillary Clinton, still unwilling to acknowledge her and her boss’s failure to accurately assess the threats from al-Qaeda and the spread of jihaists into Libya, stubbornly insists we really don’t know why the jihadists attacked and killed our people. Oh, puhleez. While not a supporter of civilian trials for enemy combatants, I must admit there is something satisfying about the prosecution’s version of events laid out for all to see. The New

Obama´s Border Crisis

It’s hard to imagine a more apt summation of the lunatic state of the nation’s immigration debate than this week’s split screen. In Washington, most respectable opinion lined up, yet again, to condemn Republicans for not passing an amnesty under the guise of defunct-for-now “comprehensive immigration reform.” Meanwhile, the crisis on the Southern border continued. A massive influx of people — largely driven by Central Americans, many of them children — drawn here in the expectation of lax immigration enforcement is overwhelming border officials and facilities. A Wall Street Journal story about the White House reaction to the crisis was headlined, “Obama Plans

This Fourth of July the federal government is issuing dire warnings to protect children from the menace of sparklers. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has released intense stick figure videos and posters warning that children should never be allowed to hold a sparkler, due to fire hazards. “Yes, we do not recommend children use sparklers, as they burn at about 2,000 degrees, which is hotter than a blow torch,” Nychelle Fleming, a spokesperson for the CPSC told the Washington Free Beacon. A 2012 video entitled “Un-Sparktacular Celebration” features a stick figure family who let their children use sparklers unsupervised.

A few years back I wrote book on the faith of Hillary Clinton. To this day it jolts liberals and conservatives alike that I, a principled Reagan conservative, would have written God and Hillary Clinton: A Spiritual Life, especially on the heels of books I did on the faiths of Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush. Conservatives were incredulous, annoyed that I took Hillary’s faith so seriously.(Snip)Well, I’m here today to underscore that those onetime claims are completely gone. Last year, Hillary Clinton embraced gay marriage, moving to the left of even her socially liberal denomination, the United Methodist Church.

Shortly before Ronald Reagan was sworn in as president, I wrote a column suggesting we call off the inauguration — because the president-elect’s brother, Neil, had just disclosed that their Irish grandfather, Michael, had snuck into America. “He was probably one of the early wetbacks, except that he came in from Canada instead of Mexico,” Neil told The Los Angeles Times. What kind of signal, I asked, would we be sending if we swore in Reagan as president? We’d be saying that no matter how you got in to America, if you could find a wife and raise a family, you could become

The tax agency’s inspector general has been warning for years of lost computer equipment, lax security that could place private taxpayers’ information at risk, and mishandled information technology contracts that wasted tens of millions of dollars. The reports are being disclosed as the IRS says its technology budget is strapped for cash, one reason the agency didn’t have a backup system to store all of Ms. Lerner’s emails that are the subject of a congressional investigation. “We are provided significant amounts of money but significantly less than we

Seinfeld premiered 25 years ago this week — but even the most dedicated viewers of its era probably missed its inaugural episode. Dumped in a graveyard slot as a mid-summer replacement, the series (which was then titled The Seinfeld Chronicles) was given just four episodes to justify its existence when it hit the airwaves in 1989. From those inauspicious origins came Seinfeld, the sitcom juggernaut that served as appointment viewing for more than 76 million Americans at its peak. Even in syndication, Seinfeld remains master of its domain; though it hasn´t produced a new episode since 1998, the series has earned

A government-contracted security force threatened to arrest doctors and nurses if they divulged any information about the contagion threat at a refugee camp housing illegal alien children at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, sources say. In spite of the threat, several former camp workers broke their confidentiality agreements and shared exclusive details with me about the dangerous conditions at the camp. They said taxpayers deserve to know about the contagious diseases and the risks the children pose to Americans. I have agreed to not to disclose their identities because they fear retaliation and prosecution.

This past week, Fox News, Megyn Kelly, and Dinesh D’Souza gave a platform to an entity that hates America and our way of life. Seems the prospect of smokin’ out a snake like Bill Ayers was too good to pass up. Getting an exclusive one-on-one with a crazy, violent communist with a small c was quite a coup for Kelly and D’Souza...or was it? Since lying and deceit generally benefit the liar, we have to ask, ”What was in it for Bill Ayers?” A mea culpa for past crimes? Hardly. After listening to Ayers, we must conclude: once a psychopath, always a psychopath.

President Obama’s displeasure with gridlock in Washington — and with the Republicans he blames for it — has been rising for months. This week it has boiled over. From the Rose Garden to the Cabinet Room to near the Key Bridge in Georgetown, the president has signaled more than mere annoyance at the state of affairs at the halfway point of this year. His disdain for congressional Republicans has steadily increased; his disrespect for their tactics has hardened into contempt. With immigration reform dead for this year, if not for the remainder of Obama’s presidency; with House Speaker John A.

Higher education is no longer just for kids in the top quarter or the top half of the class. College is for everyone," First lady Michelle Obama told a gathering of school counselors in Florida on Tuesday. "Every student in this country needs some higher education, whether that´s two-year degree, a four-year degree, or professional training of some sort." Mrs. Obama went to the annual meeting of the American School Counselor Association in Florida to thank counselors for taking on a demanding job without the resources necessary to meet the challenges. They, in turn, made her an honorary school counselor.

The threat of them was an infuriating and exhilarating specter throughout the weekend, a symbol of the oppression facing the men’s rights activists who had gathered to meet for their inaugural conference. Los Angeles teachers complain unsuspended violent kids are intimidating them and effectively ruling their classrooms. In 2011, the Education Department accused the Los Angeles Unified School District of discriminating against black boys, who were suspended for bad behavior at a disproportionate rate. The agency ordered it to reduce suspensions in the hopes that unruly minority students would stay in school and graduate. "The district shall develop and implement a comprehensive plan to eliminate the disproportionality in the discipline imposed on African-American students," the five-page decree says.
