Mark Sanford’s Path of Most Resistance
New York Times, by Jim Rutenberg

Original Article

Posted By:MissMolly, 6/28/2014 4:39:06 AM

It had been a 14-hour day of campaign-style barnstorming, but at nearly 11 p.m. there was something Mark Sanford felt compelled to show me. We were hiking across the Coosaw Plantation, an enviable slice of Southern landscape that Sanford’s family owns. Nestled in the marshy South Carolina coastline, it has ancient live oaks and twisting palmettos, cascading Spanish moss and views of the Coosaw River and the Atlantic beyond. But I could see none of it as we walked in the pitch black. The moon that was supposed to light our path was stubbornly hanging low, and I was relying on

This should have a barf alert.

Rutenbert is in cahoots with Rainey, a "power broker" and arch-enemy of Governor Haley. This gives Rainey a public forum to attack Haley and say very nasty things about her.

Haley can take care of herself, but this does not show Rainey, Sanford or Rutenberg in a very good light, IMO.

I read this story three times to make sure it wasn’t a practical joke. But no: Robert Redford to Play Dan Rather in ‘Truth’. Robert Redford has signed on to play Dan Rather in Truth, a film based on the 2005 memoir Truth and Duty: The Press, The President, and The Privilege of Power. The book, written by Rather’s producer Mary Mapes, centers on the firestorm that erupted after Rather reported that George W. Bush had gotten to serve in the National Guard in order to avoid the Vietnam War. Cate Blanchett is attached to play Mapes, who was fired after the

Sarah Palin, the Republican vice presidential nominee in 2008, is advocating the impeachment of President Barack Obama. “It’s time to impeach,” she wrote, “and on behalf of American workers and legal immigrants of all backgrounds, we should vehemently oppose any politician on the left or right who would hesitate in voting for articles of impeachment.” I am a pretty fierce critic of the president myself, but let me be among the first to say that Republicans would be insane to follow Ms. Palin’s counsel. Mr. Obama would never be forced from office, the effort would do tremendous damage to the

Almost 13 years into the post-September 11 world, National Geographic is taking a look back at the last day of the world before. The special “9/10: The Final Hours” will air Sept. 7. It will use interviews and original footage to look at both New York on the day before the attacks and the path of the hijackers on their own final day. Subjects include the everyday people who crossed paths with the hijackers on Sept. 10 – a waitress, a motel desk clerk, and the airline worker who checked them onto the plane. The thesis of the show is that America changed forever,

Although I almost never vote, when I do make an exception I use three criteria: First, and most obviously, I must either have an especially strong ideological affinity with a candidate or a particularly deep loathing for the challenger. Second, the candidate must (appear) less corrupt than his or her challenger. Third—and this is important—the candidate must be a lot more successful than I am. (Snip)But the problem with Hillary isn’t that she’s wealthy. It’s not even that she became wealthy asking for exorbitant fees while most Americans were living through a brutal recession. LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Democratic Senate candidate Alison Lundergan Grimes of Kentucky has released her first attack ad, mischaracterizing Sen. Mitch McConnell´s voting record on overhauling Medicare. In the ad, a retired coal miner asks how he and his wife are supposed to afford the extra $6,000 in Medicare costs that McConnell voted for. But the plan McConnell supported in 2011 would not have increased that family´s Medicare costs because it exempted people who are in or near retirement from any changes to the program. It would have privatized Medicare over time, which some analysts said would have eventually increased costs. Shaky claims about

Taya Kyle suggested several times that attorney David B. Olson was misstating the testimony she gave during sworn depositions before the trial. Ventura’s lawsuit claims that he was defamed in “American Sniper” by Kyle’s late husband, Chris, a former Navy SEAL, and that he slandered Ventura by repeating the false account of a bar fight in Coronado, Calif., in radio and TV interviews, undermining Ventura’s reputation. Prominent Chicago Democrats have had an easy time with the national media for decades — as easy as shaking a ring of keys to distract an anxious child in church. Former Mayor Richard M. Daley rode a bicycle in photo ops and put a few plants on the roof of City Hall, leading the national news networks to cast him as the "green" mayor, not as the absolute boss of a broken and corrupt political system that piled debt on the city and drained its future for the benefit of the insiders. The White House on Tuesday formally requested $3.7 billion in emergency funding from Congress to deal with an influx of Central American minors along the southern border. But the proposal was quickly met with broad skepticism among Republican lawmakers, who were doubtful that the package would be approved quickly — if at all. Administration officials said the request is part of a comprehensive strategy aimed at building more detention centers, adding immigration judges, and beefing up border patrols and air surveillance. President Obama has said he hopes such steps will both speed deportations and discourage adults from sending children on

Sarah Palin on Tuesday joined a growing chorus of Republicans calling for the impeachment of President Obama, writing in a Breitbart op-ed that the influx of young illegal immigrants over the southern border "is the last straw that makes the battered wife say, ´no mas.´ " Mixed/careless metaphors aside, this is nothing but bad news for Republicans — especially four months until the 2014 election. Palin is hardly the first GOP politician to raise the issue of impeachment over the past couple years. Others include Sens. James Inhofe (R-Okla.), Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) and Tim Scott (R-S.C.), Reps. Despite fiery statements issued by Hamas spokesmen over the past 48 hours, it was obvious Tuesday night that the Islamist movement was searching for ways to rid itself of the current escalation. Hamas feels that it has been forced into a confrontation with Israel – one that it did not want at this stage because of its increased isolation and financial crisis. The massive Israeli air strikes on the Gaza Strip over the past 24 hours have surprised Hamas and other Palestinian groups. Hamas apparently expected a limited response to the recent rocket attacks on Israeli cities and towns. But as the

Starting next week, House Republicans will launch a highly visible—and likely tumultuous—three-week process of bringing to the floor legislation to authorize their promised lawsuit against President Obama over his use of executive actions. "In theory, you could report out a resolution tomorrow and vote on it," said a House GOP aide on Tuesday. "But that is not the approach [the leaders] want to take." Rather, the aim is to display—if not actually engage in—a more deliberative process, even if amid controversy. This drawn-out script builds toward a potentially dramatic floor vote held just days, or even hours, before the House adjourns on

WASHINGTON — Congressional Democrats said Tuesday that they had developed legislation to override the Supreme Court decision on contraceptives. The bill would ensure that women have access to coverage for birth control even if they work for businesses that have religious objections. The bill, developed in consultation with the Obama administration, would require for-profit corporations like Hobby Lobby Stores to provide and pay for contraceptive coverage, along with other preventive services, under the Affordable Care Act. The measure could be on the Senate floor as early as next week, Senate Democrats said. “Your health care decisions are not your boss’s

Fate hasn´t been kind to Hillary Clinton, at least not in its most recent phase. In 2008, when the plate was set for the national Democrats, she lost the nomination to Barack Obama, of scant years and no gravitas, who soared out of nowhere to wrench destiny from her on the unspecified promise of "change." Now, "change" has come, and people don´t like it. Iraq changed from a safe, stable ally (just ask Obama) to a terrorist haven, one of the reasons why, though no fellow Democrats seem likely to edge her, her chances of winning the White House seem dim.
