The government says "many vacancies" are available at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, for a salary range of $50.50 to $101 per day. The purpose? To provide services to children of military officers, K-12, as a substitute for the regular teacher, according to a job listing posted Wednesday on federalgovernmentjobs.us. No written test is required. Relocation expenses will not be authorized. And applications will be accepted from U.S. citizens within the "commuting area" of Guantanamo. I had to read and re-read this to make certain that I wasn´t crazy. Of course there are no family dependents at Guantanamo. Is this for real? Is the government really advertising for this? Horrors!

Whole Foods isn’t dropping contraception coverage for employees but nevertheless, it’s facing a Hobby Lobby backlash. By Wednesday afternoon, more than 7,000 people signed an online petition urging Whole Foods to stop carrying products from Eden Foods, one of the 82 companies trying to opt out of covering contraception in health insurance following the Supreme Court’s ruling. The letter asks Whole Foods, which carries more than 2,000 Eden Foods products, to stand up against companies like Eden who are fighting to deny their employees basic health care. “While individual-level boycotting of Eden Foods may not have

North Korea fired two short-range missiles off the east coast of the Korean Peninsula early Wednesday, a South Korean Defense Ministry official said. No damage or injures were reported. The projectiles flew more than 310 miles (almost 500 kilometers), the official said. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has ordered his Cabinet to look into the apparent launch. The Japanese government intends to lodge an official protest with the North Korean government. North Korea has carried out a series of missile and rocket launches into the sea in recent months, drawing criticism from South Korea, the United States and the United Nations.

The European Union is pressing the United States to lift its longstanding ban on crude oil exports through a sweeping trade and investment deal, according to a secret document from the negotiations obtained by The Washington Post. It´s not entirely surprising. The EU has made its desire for the right to import U.S. oil known since the U.S. started producing large amounts of it in the mid-2000s. It signaled again at the outset of trade negotiations, and its intentions have become even more clear since. This time, though, the EU is adding another argument: Instability on its Eastern flank threatens to cut off the supply of oil and natural gas

An Israeli military spokeswoman said she had no initial details on the strike. The militant, Hafez Hamad, two brothers and his parents were killed when his house was bombed in an air strike in the town of Beit Hanoun in the northern Gaza Strip, Hamas media and Gaza interior ministry said. An unidentified woman in the house was also killed. That brought the death toll in Gaza to at least 22 since Israel launched its offensive

Washington - Sen. Robert Menendez, who has been dogged by a federal corruption probe, suggests he was the target of a Cuban intelligence smear plot over allegations -- which the FBI has discounted -- that he had sex with underage prostitutes in the Dominican Republic. The New Jersey Democrat told CNN in an exclusive interview on Tuesday that the Justice Department should look at any evidence it may have that he was the subject of a conspiracy by the regime to spread false allegations. Menendez said he has for years had a "firm position in opposition to the Cuban regime" on grounds that it violates human rights.

Kush, a 4-year-old Russian Blue, lashed out at his owners, Teresa and James Gregory, in a fur-flying rampage that prompted calls to DeLand police. The cat was removed from the home by animal control and has been quarantined for 10 days following the Saturday night attack that left its owners with several bloody scratches on their legs and hands, according to Bay 9 News. "If they have a need for additional help, they should let us know," Quinn told reporters in an unrelated news conference on Tuesday. "I think it´s always based on their request. I´m not going to impose anything on any local municipality in the state or a big city like Chicago." Quinn´s comments came after a violent holiday weekend in Chicago that left 13 dead at least 58 wounded despite hundreds of additional officers assigned to city streets in that time period.

At least one leading scientist raised the possibility that there are more such vials out there around the world.

It is now easier to get high in Brooklyn. The borough’s district attorney Kenneth Thompson announced Tuesday he will no longer prosecute people with little or no criminal record who get caught with small amounts of weed. While the majority of such cases already end up with an eventual dismissal, those arrested from now on - with some exceptions - will be released before seeing a judge, according to a DA memo. Yet the revised approach will not be shared by cops and might even cause tension between the DA and the NYPD. “This new policy is a reasonable response to the thousands of low-level marijuana arrests that weigh down the

The White House on Tuesday formally requested $3.7 billion in emergency funding from Congress to deal with an influx of Central American minors along the southern border. But the proposal was quickly met with broad skepticism among Republican lawmakers, who were doubtful that the package would be approved quickly — if at all. Administration officials said the request is part of a comprehensive strategy aimed at building more detention centers, adding immigration judges, and beefing up border patrols and air surveillance. President Obama has said he hopes such steps will both speed deportations and discourage adults from sending children on

Despite fiery statements issued by Hamas spokesmen over the past 48 hours, it was obvious Tuesday night that the Islamist movement was searching for ways to rid itself of the current escalation. Hamas feels that it has been forced into a confrontation with Israel – one that it did not want at this stage because of its increased isolation and financial crisis. The massive Israeli air strikes on the Gaza Strip over the past 24 hours have surprised Hamas and other Palestinian groups. Hamas apparently expected a limited response to the recent rocket attacks on Israeli cities and towns. But as the

Starting next week, House Republicans will launch a highly visible—and likely tumultuous—three-week process of bringing to the floor legislation to authorize their promised lawsuit against President Obama over his use of executive actions. "In theory, you could report out a resolution tomorrow and vote on it," said a House GOP aide on Tuesday. "But that is not the approach [the leaders] want to take." Rather, the aim is to display—if not actually engage in—a more deliberative process, even if amid controversy. WASHINGTON — Congressional Democrats said Tuesday that they had developed legislation to override the Supreme Court decision on contraceptives. The bill would ensure that women have access to coverage for birth control even if they work for businesses that have religious objections. The bill, developed in consultation with the Obama administration, would require for-profit corporations like Hobby Lobby Stores to provide and pay for contraceptive coverage, along with other preventive services, under the Affordable Care Act. The measure could be on the Senate floor as early as next week, Senate Democrats said. “Your health care decisions are not your boss’s

Fate hasn´t been kind to Hillary Clinton, at least not in its most recent phase. In 2008, when the plate was set for the national Democrats, she lost the nomination to Barack Obama, of scant years and no gravitas, who soared out of nowhere to wrench destiny from her on the unspecified promise of "change." Now, "change" has come, and people don´t like it. Iraq changed from a safe, stable ally (just ask Obama) to a terrorist haven, one of the reasons why, though no fellow Democrats seem likely to edge her, her chances of winning the White House seem dim. In fact, Obama thinks programs like DACA and a comprehensive amnesty bill are ways to solve the border crisis. Addressing the press Wednesday after meeting with Texas Governor Rick Perry to discuss the border crisis in Dallas, Obama, when asked if programs like DACA have caused or contributed to the crisis,
