Venezuelan left turns against
President Maduro saying he

CARACAS, VENEZUELA – Already grappling with street protests led by the right, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro is facing a new threat from an unlikely place: old-school leftists who accuse him of betraying the socialist legacy that carried him to power. Maduro was tapped by Hugo Chavez as his preferred successor to the presidency, and is quick to invoke the late leader´s name, but orthodox socialists are grumbling over liberalized currency reforms they say are counter to the revolution. The tensions came to a head last week when Maduro fired Planning Minister Jorge Giordani, a Marxist economist whose Spartan lifestyle and

Comments:
At least Maduro doesn´t have to worry about dying of cancer. It´s far more likely that he´ll be smoked.

This reminds me of the leftists who complain that Obama is too right-wing.

I´ll admit it: I think Maduro situation is humorous.

Chavez´s demise was on the cusp of the crash of Venezuela under his rule, and Maduro gets the blame.

That they can get away with saying this shows Maduro is untrue to Chavez´ legacy. Back in the day, it would not have gone well for them!

I have been staying with my parents recently, while my house is being renovated. I have also been breaking out in hives. (Snip) Experts use the term "social allergens" to describe behaviors or habits that drive others nuts. Some of these actions begin to annoy us soon after we meet someone. Others get to us slowly and surely over time. Imagine a heehaw laugher. A knuckle cracker. A braggart who always tries to one-up you. A person who thinks loud belching is a compliment to the chef. As with a lot of allergies, it´s the repetition that gets to us.

The most interesting overnight news is that former French president Nicolas Sarkozy has been “held for questioning” by police investigating allegations that he tried to influence a judge investigating a illegal contributions to his campaign. Under French law a person can be “held” for up to 48 hours without being charged. “This is thought to be the first time a French former head of state has been held in police custody.” (Snip) In today’s Vox, Ezra Klein writes of unease about the provenance of the Clinton stash. ”The problem isn’t that the Clintons are rich, it’s where the money came

When Gerald Ford remarked that “a government big enough to give you everything you want is a government big enough to take from you everything you have” he might have been commenting on the Supreme Court Hobby Lobby decision which ruled 5-4 as the Washington Post reports: “that the arts-and-crafts chain does not have to offer insurance for four types of birth control that conflict with company owners’ religious beliefs.” Walter Russell Mead gets what is at issue. Beyond the narrow facts of the decision, the case itself underlines the unpleasantly large scope that government regulation now covers. Government, to

Robert Zubrin writes, in a National Review article, about a secret meeting between Western national socialist parties and the agent of Vladimir Putin. The venue is what you would expect: a James Bond like setting with mysterious billionaires in attendance. (Snip) From Obama’s point of view his main frustration must be his inability to match the expansionary efforts of his rivals. No wonder he hates the Republican Congress so; without their narrow minded obstruction he might already be a Herman von Rompuy. And who’s resisting the trend towards gigantism? Nobody but a ragtag UKIP here and tattered Tea Party there.

Perhaps the single most comprehensive summary of developments — or lack thereof — in the MH370 mystery is by Bruce Drum of World Airline News. It lays out the state of knowledge about what happen to missing Malaysian Airlines jet and where the search may go from here. Something happened on MH370 but we don’t know what it was. Nor perhaps can we ever know. Given the size of the search area, probabilities and assumptions

It’s a scene straight out of fiction. Refugees from North Africa, packed like sardines in small boats are streaming in droves across the Med to Italy. (Snip) Once inside Europe, these migrants replicate their homelands, sometimes right down to the quarrels that split their countries in the first place. The New York Times recently covered a case which has riveted France, the beating of a gypsy boy by “migrants” who wanted to teach him a lesson for stealing. The Roma boy was beaten to a literal pulp, dumped in a supermarket trolley and left as trash to be collected.

The McCarthy Wildlife Sanctuary boasts the “coolest collection of snakes around,” but Thursday morning one of those snakes, a 2-foot-long spectacled cobra, bit a sanctuary employee as she cleaned cages. The woman, who’s permitted to handle snakes, was bitten shortly after 5:30 a.m., reported Katie Johnson, spokeswoman for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. By 5:45 a.m., Palm Beach County Fire Rescue crews were taking her to Palms West Hospital and by 8 a.m. an antivenin team from Miami had arrived to help treat her. By lunch time, the woman was in critical condition, Johnson said.

For two and a half decades, Peter Richard Conte has had one of the strangest, most wonderful jobs in all of retail. Twice a day, six days a week he has performed 45-minute concerts on one of the largest pipe organs in the world, an instrument improbably located in a downtown Philadelphia department store. The organ, built for the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis, was such an enormous—and enormously expensive—undertaking that it bankrupted the manufacturer. It was claimed that the instrument, with some 10,000 pipes, was "capable of producing 17,179,869,183 distinct tonal effects."

The classic comic book hero Sgt. Franklin John Rock eventually died, according to the canon, in the European Theater of Operation “on the last day of the war by the last enemy bullet fired”. Poland grudgingly says the US is “still” and important ally, though it’s foreign minister candidly called its alliance under the Obama administration “worthless”. Japan is re-arming. There are two sorts of stock human dramas that play out in every age of history. The first concerns people who were once rich but are now discovering they are poor. The second is their opposite; people who were once poor who suddenly realize they are rich. Years ago there were riveting accounts in a Manila newspaper about a man, whose surname was a byword for inherited wealth, pathetically resisting eviction from his ancestral home. The man — who gave his occupation as artist — sat disconsolate in the driveway of his former home, surrounded by his books, records and memorabilia, refusing the court order to leave until hunger and the

Megyn Kelly faced off with former Weather Underground leader Bill Ayers in an explosive interview tonight in which Kelly repeatedly confronted Ayers about bombings and killings that the radical group was reportedly involved in. Kelly asked Ayers how many bombings he was personally responsible for. Ayers declined to answer, but did acknowledge the “terrible risk” they took with some of their more out-there tactics. Kelly grilled him on how the Weather Underground “declared a state of war against the U.S. government” and encouraged violence. Kelly went through a series of instances in which the Weather Underground was tied to bombings and killings,

The Keystone Pipeline project was expected to create tens of thousands of high paying jobs in the oil industry. The project itself would create 20,000 construction jobs. And the pipeline would bring oil from Canada and North Dakota to refineries in the United States. The proposed project would have extended from Alberta, Canada to Illinois, transporting approximately 400,000 barrels of crude oil per day. Estimated cost is $1.7 billion. But Obama rejected the plan in 2011 and 2014. Democrats are beholden to the radical green movement – the poor and middle class be damned. Now this… Canada pulled the plug on Keystone and will

As thousands of disease-riddled criminals storm across our borders, is it really time to mince words? President Obama appears to have an Agenda for America that stinks worse than a Border Patrol bus depot crammed with urine-drenched illegals. Is the man trying to protect and defend us, or does he want us to kick the bucket, run down the curtain, and join the choir invisible? On January 29, 2014, the Department of Homeland Security advertised for a vendor to escort 65,000 “unaccompanied alien children,” indicating that they not only knew the alien invasion was coming, they planned it.

Today, the Supreme Court ruled in the nationally followed Hobby Lobby case. The for-profit corporations that brought these cases to the Supreme Court—a craft store and a cabinet manufacturer—argued that the corporations’ religious convictions should excuse them from compensating their employees through the comprehensive health insurance required by law. Specifically, these private employers sought to exclude insurance coverage of several forms of birth control because, contrary to medical and scientific evidence, the corporations’ owners believe some birth control causes abortions. The Affordable Care Act already includes special arrangements for houses of worship and religious non-profits, like schools and hospitals. Houses

One week after traveling to Mississippi to do his utmost to help Senator Thad Cochran (R) beat Tea Party rival Chris McDaniel, Senator John McCain (R-AZ) talked about the strengths he saw in Cochran´s approach to campaigning. According to AZ Central, McCain dismissed criticism over the tactics the Republican Establishment used to get black Democrats to cross over and vote for Cochran. Said McCain, "There are some people complaining that African-American voters voted. [But] I thought one of the major priorities of the Republican Party was to get all minority and ethnic voters out to vote for Republicans." He described Cochran´s "get-out-the-vote campaign"

The Israeli Air Force carried out what it called "precision strikes" on 34 "terror targets" in the Gaza Strip overnight, after the discovery of the bodies of three Israeli teenagers who were kidnapped in the West Bank earlier this month. The Israeli Defense Forces said the strikes were in response to rockets being launched earlier into Israel from Gaza. The waves of rockets from Gaza and IDF retaliations have picked up since the teens were kidnapped and the Israeli crackdown began. Hamas has not claimed responsibility for launching the rockets but Israel holds them responsible for everything coming out of Gaza. The Israel Defense

The president said his administration would ´refocus´ its efforts on the border, and he would use his ´existing legal authority´ to do ´what Congress refuses to do´ and fix the broken immigration system.
