Obamacare´s Prognosis Grows Dimmer
Bloomberg, by Lanhee Chen

A nightmare for Affordable Care Act supporters has been the possibility that only the sick would be left to purchase insurance through its exchanges, driving premiums up and insurers out. While the law’s boosters have been quick to dismiss the possibility that such a so-called death spiral could occur, data published in the Wall Street Journal suggest that this chain of events may not be so far-fetched after all. The findings are significant not just for what they say about how Obamacare is working now, but also for their impact on the political debate over its future. At its base, the data

Sorry, folks. It doesn´t matter how BAD this law is. Obama needs something he can tie his name to. Hence, "Obamacare." It will be thrust down our throats no matter what.

President Obama has an opportunity to do two big things: help resolve the ongoing crisis at the border, and put us on a path to immigration reform. Unfortunately, he doesn’t seem interested in either. Today the president is in Texas, where he turned down an invitation from Gov. Rick Perry to tour the border for himself so he might see the crisis firsthand. Not interested, the president told the governor. Instead, he’ll spend his time .?.?. fund-raising. Obama’s visit to Texas comes just after he asked Congress for $3.8 billion in emergency spending. The money is meant to address the chaos at the

This might have been the best meal served on a plane. A Frontier Airlines pilot treated passengers to a pizza party on Monday after their flight was experiencing a dreadful delay and had run out of food. Stranded on the runway for nearly two hours, passengers were apparently growing hungry, and one of the pilots knew he had to act fast. Traveling from Washington, D.C., to Denver, the plane had been diverted to Cheyenne, Wyoming, due to a series of storms in the area, CNN reports. After realizing that the plane’s food supplies had been completely depleted, the pilot made the decision to

Wilmington, Del. Had Cora Crawley married into America´s version of landed gentry instead of becoming the countess of Downton Abbey, she might have found herself living in a place like Winterthur. Home to a branch of the du Pont family (and fortune), this vast estate north of Wilmington grew larger with each generation that inhabited it and reached glorious flower with its last private owner, Henry Francis du Pont. An eminent collector of early American decorative arts, in 1951 he turned the nine-story, 175-room mansion into the enchanting Winterthur Museum. Until then the estate was a world unto itself, 982 acres

To save the Windy City, we have to use everything at our disposal. A major American city is quickly being lost to guns, gangs, drugs and hopelessness, and political and business leaders are giving lip service to the problem. Yet while our politicians dither, the city’s Southside and Westside residents are living in perpetual fear, afraid to walk the streets. It’s time for Mayor Rahn Emanuel to put his ego and political ambitions aside. It’s time for him to ask the state police and the National Guard to come into Chicago and assist the police department in regaining control of the city’s

The terrorist who’s taken over much of Syria and Iraq doesn’t need to call himself the Mahdi—he’s got social media. Is Judgment Day at hand? The man who calls himself Caliph Ibrahim and demands the allegiance of Muslims everywhere has mastered the manipulation of religious symbols in ways that resonate with gullible young Muslims and scare the hell out of some wiser ones—including many nervous Arab leaders. Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, as he used to be known, has stopped short of proclaiming himself the Mahdi, a messianic figure who will appear on earth shortly before Judgment Day, but that might just be

The crowd was standing room only, and then some. At least a dozen people stood in the hallway outside the meeting room, prohibited by fire regulations from going in. The proposed shelters for

Rick Perry two-stepped his way back into the national spotlight this week, using the crisis at the border to skewer President Barack Obama while pumping up his own conservative bona fides. The Republican Texas governor, who’s mulling over a 2016 presidential bid, has appeared on national TV to trash the White House’s response to the unusual influx of children at the border. He also seized headlines when he declined to simply greet Obama at the airport during a presidential visit this week, and instead pushed for a face-to-face meeting.

Fate hasn´t been kind to Hillary Clinton, at least not in its most recent phase. In 2008, when the plate was set for the national Democrats, she lost the nomination to Barack Obama, of scant years and no gravitas, who soared out of nowhere to wrench destiny from her on the unspecified promise of "change." Now, "change" has come, and people don´t like it. Iraq changed from a safe, stable ally (just ask Obama) to a terrorist haven, one of the reasons why, though no fellow Democrats seem likely to edge her, her chances of winning the White House seem dim. Here are some observations: 1. By May of 2011, Texas had regained all of the jobs lost during the Great Recession. In contrast, it took California three years longer, until April of this year, to regain the state jobs lost due to the effects of the recession. Since the Lone Star State regained all of the lost recession-related payroll jobs

Sarah Palin on Tuesday joined a growing chorus of Republicans calling for the impeachment of President Obama, writing in a Breitbart op-ed that the influx of young illegal immigrants over the southern border "is the last straw that makes the battered wife say, ´no mas.´ " Mixed/careless metaphors aside, this is nothing but bad news for Republicans — especially four months until the 2014 election. The White House on Tuesday formally requested $3.7 billion in emergency funding from Congress to deal with an influx of Central American minors along the southern border. But the proposal was quickly met with broad skepticism among Republican lawmakers, who were doubtful that the package would be approved quickly — if at all. Administration officials said the request is part of a comprehensive strategy aimed at building more detention centers, adding immigration judges, and beefing up border patrols and air surveillance. President Obama has said he hopes such steps will both speed deportations and discourage adults from sending children on

WASHINGTON — Congressional Democrats said Tuesday that they had developed legislation to override the Supreme Court decision on contraceptives. The bill would ensure that women have access to coverage for birth control even if they work for businesses that have religious objections. The bill, developed in consultation with the Obama administration, would require for-profit corporations like Hobby Lobby Stores to provide and pay for contraceptive coverage, along with other preventive services, under the Affordable Care Act. The measure could be on the Senate floor as early as next week, Senate Democrats said. “Your health care decisions are not your boss’s

President Obama evidently has decided not to put a human face on the crisis unfolding at the U.S. southern border—not even his own. The White House said over and over again Monday that Obama will not travel to the border with Mexico despite flying to Texas this week to raise money for Democratic candidates there. It´s certainly in part a political decision, one meant to avoid taking ownership of a difficult issue on which the White House would prefer to share blame.
