The Merger of the Party and the State
SteynOnline, by Mark Steyn

Original Article

Posted By:StormCnter, 6/26/2014 5:28:55 AM

Here at SteynOnline every cutting-edge pop culture reference has to be at least three-quarters of a century old. So, watching the IRS Commissioner John Koskinen, I found him a dead ringer for Guy Kibbee, the beaming befuddled sugar daddy who was a mainstay at Warner Brothers in the early Thirties. Mr Koskinen is a Democrat sugar daddy who has given generously to his party since the Seventies: He´s not the kind of sober civil servant you´d appoint if you were looking to signal to America that King Barack´s revenue collectors are cleaning house and returning, chastened, to their previous role

When Rush is not at the Golden EIB microphone, we are often treated to America´s undocumented anchorman, Mark Steyn. What a treasure this guy is.
Witty, incisive, accurate, entertaining. All the good things that a host should be. He manages to convey the preposterous political situation by observations such as the one in today´s article.
His quarrel with Canada´s Thought Police is a case in point. Mark had the temerity to accurately describe the Islamic goal of world domination. So he was accused of hate speech.
Catch him when you can!

I Was Right About the ACA
Manhattan Instutite, by Charles Blahous    Original Article

Around and after the time that the Affordable Care Act was enacted, many analysts identified problems with claims being made about the law, and we offered explanations of its likely actual effects. Too often these were brushed aside amid efforts to promote the ACA in the face of growing public opposition. But four years into the ACA, it is remarkable how well our predictions have been borne out. Below I will resurrect but five of my own specific predictions about the ACA, contrast them with what many advocates had said, and review what subsequent events have shown. #1: States will make a variety of decisions with respect

The Dick and Liz Cheney recovery tour

Dick and Liz Cheney have been impossible to miss in recent weeks, sparring with Democrats and Rand Paul over the latest mess in Iraq, making the rounds on Fox News and launching a group to reassert the case for their hawkish brand of foreign policy. But the frenzy of activity reflects only the public side of the father-daughter duo’s PR blitz of late. In a series of private meetings and back-channel discussions, the Cheneys have quietly been working to repair their relationship with a Republican establishment of which they’d been card-carrying members for decades — but that was strained by Liz

America´s Birthday

Birthdays are supposed to be times for celebration and gift-giving. But America’s upcoming birthday on the Fourth of July is a time when the gift most needed is an urgent warning about the dangers of losing the things that have made this country America — and have long made “America” a ringing word of freedom, not only in this country but to people around the world. All is not lost. But all could be lost — especially if too many of us take freedom for granted and focus our attention on other things, like electronic gadgets and the antics of celebrities,

Men’s rights activists, gathering to discuss

St. Claire Shores, MI -The feminists hadn’t shown up yet, but they could, at any moment, with their protest signs and screaming. The threat of them was an infuriating and exhilarating specter throughout the weekend, a symbol of the oppression facing the men’s rights activists who had gathered to meet for their inaugural conference. Early Friday before the opening session, a wispy trail of men — mostly white, college-through-retirement-age — waited for the doors to open outside of this Veterans of Foreign Wars outpost in suburban Detroit. One man talked about his ex-wife. A lot of guys talked about their ex-wives.

In late June, the Pew Research Center released "Beyond Red vs. Blue: The Political Typology." Breaking the nation´s voting public into seven types (plus one type that does not regularly vote), Pew aims to give a more granular perspective on the nation´s body politic. Pew´s political map can be a helpful tool for Republicans and conservatives looking to chart a path to a sustainable governing coalition. Pew outlines eight groups: Steadfast Conservatives ("socially conservative populists"); Business Conservatives ("pro-Wall Street"); Young Outsiders ("conservative views on government, not social issues"); Hard-Pressed Skeptics ("financially stressed and pessimistic"); the Next Generation Left ("young, liberal

A notorious match-fixer reportedly predicted exactly what would happen in one of last week’s World Cup games. Cameroon is investigating claims that players lost in exchange for cash. Cameroon was easily the worst team at the World Cup. It lost every game, scored one goal, conceded nine, and had a player sent off for a bizarre elbow attack. It was a fiasco, but were some of the players screwing up on purpose? Cameroon’s football association has launched an investigation into claims that a group of its players conspired to lose deliberately. Wilson Raj Perumal, a convicted match-fixer, correctly predicted the

Childhood vaccines are safe. Seriously.

Children should get vaccinated against preventable and potentially deadly diseases. Period. That´s what a project that screened more than 20,000 scientific titles and 67 papers on vaccine safety concludes this week. The review appears in the latest edition of the medical journal Pediatrics. The evidence strongly suggests that side effects from vaccines are incredibly rare, the study authors said. They found no ties between vaccines and the rising number of children with autism, as a small but vocal group of anti-vaccine activists, including actors Jenny McCarthy and Jim Carey, have said.

Obama weighs executive hammer

President Obama is weighing executive actions after the Supreme Court ruled against ObamaCare’s contraception mandate. The White House swiftly called on Congress to enact a legislative fix but realistically knows lawmakers aren’t about to act. Obama has come under criticism from Republicans for his use of executive actions. Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) has announced the House will vote this month on approving a lawsuit against Obama over actions Boehner says are an abuse of power. But the GOP criticism and threat seem unlikely to act as a brake on Obama, who separately on Monday said he would move forward with administrative actions on

It´s going to be a little more difficult to ferret out which members of Congress are lavished with all-expenses-paid trips around the world after the House has quietly stripped away the requirement that such privately sponsored travel be included on lawmakers´ annual financial-disclosure forms. The move, made behind closed doors and without a public announcement by the House Ethics Committee, reverses more than three decades of precedent. Gifts of free travel to lawmakers have appeared on the yearly financial form dating back its creation in the late 1970s, after the Watergate scandal. National Journal uncovered the deleted disclosure requirement when analyzing

If you’re an employer with more than 50 workers, you must comply with the employer mandate to offer health insurance starting Jan. 1, 2015 — unless you’re a medium-sized employer with 50 to 99 employees, in which case the mandate is delayed a year. To avoid penalties, you must offer coverage to full-time employees; that is, those who work at least 30 hours a week or 130 hours a month — but you can impose a 90-day waiting period before starting coverage. For seasonal workers, you can decide at the beginning of each month who among your workers will be

Two Texans may be vying for the Republican presidential nomination in 2016: Sen. Ted Cruz and Governor Rick Perry. Cruz overwhelmingly won the Texas GOP 2016 convention straw poll, confirming his position as the conservative grassroots candidate. He fires up crowds unlike any other politician today, and the power of motivating voters and volunteers should not be underestimated. But will he run in 2016? The signs point to yes. One of his staffers left his office to start a committee to draft him into running. He has visited the early states and spent many weekends during his first 18 months in office raising

Megyn Kelly faced off with former Weather Underground leader Bill Ayers in an explosive interview tonight in which Kelly repeatedly confronted Ayers about bombings and killings that the radical group was reportedly involved in. Kelly asked Ayers how many bombings he was personally responsible for. Ayers declined to answer, but did acknowledge the “terrible risk” they took with some of their more out-there tactics. Kelly grilled him on how the Weather Underground “declared a state of war against the U.S. government” and encouraged violence. Kelly went through a series of instances in which the Weather Underground was tied to bombings and killings,

The Keystone Pipeline project was expected to create tens of thousands of high paying jobs in the oil industry. The project itself would create 20,000 construction jobs. And the pipeline would bring oil from Canada and North Dakota to refineries in the United States. The proposed project would have extended from Alberta, Canada to Illinois, transporting approximately 400,000 barrels of crude oil per day. Estimated cost is $1.7 billion. But Obama rejected the plan in 2011 and 2014. Democrats are beholden to the radical green movement – the poor and middle class be damned. Now this… Canada pulled the plug on Keystone and will

As thousands of disease-riddled criminals storm across our borders, is it really time to mince words? President Obama appears to have an Agenda for America that stinks worse than a Border Patrol bus depot crammed with urine-drenched illegals. Is the man trying to protect and defend us, or does he want us to kick the bucket, run down the curtain, and join the choir invisible? On January 29, 2014, the Department of Homeland Security advertised for a vendor to escort 65,000 “unaccompanied alien children,” indicating that they not only knew the alien invasion was coming, they planned it.

Today, the Supreme Court ruled in the nationally followed Hobby Lobby case. The for-profit corporations that brought these cases to the Supreme Court—a craft store and a cabinet manufacturer—argued that the corporations’ religious convictions should excuse them from compensating their employees through the comprehensive health insurance required by law. Specifically, these private employers sought to exclude insurance coverage of several forms of birth control because, contrary to medical and scientific evidence, the corporations’ owners believe some birth control causes abortions. The Affordable Care Act already includes special arrangements for houses of worship and religious non-profits, like schools and hospitals. Houses

One week after traveling to Mississippi to do his utmost to help Senator Thad Cochran (R) beat Tea Party rival Chris McDaniel, Senator John McCain (R-AZ) talked about the strengths he saw in Cochran´s approach to campaigning. According to AZ Central, McCain dismissed criticism over the tactics the Republican Establishment used to get black Democrats to cross over and vote for Cochran. Said McCain, "There are some people complaining that African-American voters voted. [But] I thought one of the major priorities of the Republican Party was to get all minority and ethnic voters out to vote for Republicans." He described Cochran´s "get-out-the-vote campaign"

The Israeli Air Force carried out what it called "precision strikes" on 34 "terror targets" in the Gaza Strip overnight, after the discovery of the bodies of three Israeli teenagers who were kidnapped in the West Bank earlier this month. The Israeli Defense Forces said the strikes were in response to rockets being launched earlier into Israel from Gaza. The waves of rockets from Gaza and IDF retaliations have picked up since the teens were kidnapped and the Israeli crackdown began. Hamas has not claimed responsibility for launching the rockets but Israel holds them responsible for everything coming out of Gaza. The Israel Defense

In a hastily scheduled statement this afternoon from the White House Rose Garden, Obama said he would ´greatly prefer´ Congress passing any sort of immigration reform legislation, even if it wasn´t the bill he supports, but he was done sitting around waiting for that to happen. The president said his administration would ´refocus´ its efforts on the border, and he would use his ´existing legal authority´ to do ´what Congress refuses to do´ and fix the broken immigration system.
