Activists angered by the closing of water accounts for thousands of people behind in their payments have taken their fight to the United Nations. In March, the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department (DWSD) announced that it would start cutting off the services of homes, schools and businesses that were at least 60 days overdue or more than $150 behind. It said it wanted to start recouping $118million owed from unpaid bills and that a fierce approach was needed to coax money from delinquent accounts, which make up almost half of the city’s total. The move, in which as many as 3,000 properties

Some horrific euphemisms here.

The Independent isn´t. It´s as bad as the Guardian generally.

Activists? These are garden variety leftists who want the government to own all and pay all.

If America is to intentionally become a Third World country, then its people must learn what deprivations go with that.

Democrat answer to the problem: Just raise the rates on those who are willing to pay to cover the cost of water to those who choose not to pay. Just like nationalized health care...see? Simple fix!

How ironic. The government drives all business out of Detroit and then shuts off the water to anyone who can´t work because there are no jobs.

They already did that, #3. My city´s water comes from Detroit. For the first three years we lived here we received notices from our city government suggesting ways to conserve water so that the city would not have to pay for a larger water contract.

Two years ago, Detroit changed the way they billed for water in our city. Now, instead of paying for what we use, everyone pays a minimum of sixty dollars for being hooked up to Detroit´s water system, and then we pay for what we use on top of that.

Mark Halperin, a frequent panelist on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, made an intriguing observation on Monday’s show about the IRS scandal. After saying that the recent news regarding the destroyed hard drive belonging to former IRS official Lois Lerner would be “a test for the news media,” Halperin took a stance on the scandal that few on the cable channel would dare take. “I think with a different administration, one that was a Republican administration, this story would be a national obsession and, instead, it´s getting coverage here and a few other places, but it really deserves a lot more questions,” opined

When U.S. troops arrive back in Iraq to try to salvage its rapidly deteriorating situation, they have more to worry about than fighting ISIS terrorists. Those soldiers could also face criminal prosecution in Iraqi courts, since President Barack Obama failed to secure an immunity agreement for American forces. Obama pulled troops out of Iraq in 2011 when he failed to get the Iraqis to sign a Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA), part of which would grant American troops immunity from lawsuits (including criminal prosecutions) in Iraq’s courts. Hillary Clinton has stepped in it again. After previously trying to justify her six-figure speaking fees by claiming she and Bill Clinton were “dead broke” when leaving the White House, she´s come under fire for stating that she wasn´t that “well-off.” This has led to a spate of stories about whether the Clintons´ enormous wealth would weigh on her presidential ambitions in a nation with growing populist sentiment. But the deeper takeaway from her recent dustups isn´t her wealth, but that she´s an overrated politician. To understand how a clever politician can handle such an issue, consider how a very

What is unusual is that this revision of history is being committed by conservatives who should know better. Recent commentary by Glenn Beck, George Will and Charles Krauthammer indicate that they have significant memory lapses about why we went to war in Iraq. The decision this past week by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to rescind federal trademark protections for the Redskins may ultimately tip the balance in the controversy over the 80-year-old name of Washington’s football team. If so, that would be a shame. Not because there’s insufficient reason to consider the name “disparaging to Native Americans,” as the patent office determined. Many of us recoil at the reference to skin color as a team identity. The problem is that the Redskins case is just the latest example of a federal agency going beyond its brief to inappropriately insert itself in

US Secretary of State John Kerry has arrived in Iraq´s capital, Baghdad as Sunni insurgents expand their control of towns across north-western Iraq. In Egypt on Sunday, Mr Kerry warned that Sunni militants Isis´ "ideology of violence and repression is a threat not only to Iraq but to the entire region". On Sunday rebels--spearheaded by Isis militants--captured border crossings to Syria and Jordan. The strategically important airport in the northern Tal Afar has also fallen. The town controls the main road from the Syrian border to Mosul, Iraq´s second biggest city, which was captured by the rebels two weeks ago.

The least loved institution in America today is the U.S. Senate, and one of the reasons it is reviled is a zero-sum approach to women´s medical care. It´s time we changed that and adopt modern policies that make sense instead of using women´s medical issues as an election-year power play. One of the most rational ways for Washington to break this gridlock is to approve oral contraception for over-the-counter purchases by adults.
