Caribbean HIV/AIDS pioneer Dr. Brendan
Bain obtains injunction against dismissal

Legal Insurrection, by William A. Jacobson

Original Article

We previously wrote about the dismissal of Dr. Brendan Bain, a pioneer in anti-HIV/AIDS research and care in the Caribbean, after he submitted an accurate affidavit in a controversial Belize lawsuit, Pioneering University HIV/AIDS researcher sacked over accurate but politically incorrect court testimony The affidavit documented that gay men are at high risk for HIV/AIDs infection, a seemingly non-controversial position, but which caused gay rights activists to demand his dismissal from a research position at the University of West Indies in Jamaica. Protests in support of Dr. Bain followed, and Dr. Bain recently obtained a court

The activist dolts are shooting the messenger. Dr. Bain has devoted his career to fighting AIDS/HIV. His resume in area is as long as my arm. Here is one small accomplishment: In August 1999, he started an out-patient clinic for persons living with HIV/AIDS at UHWI and has inspired the commencement of a similar clinic at the Kingston Public Hospital. Why would you impede the work of someone who´s giving everything he can to help you?

Hillary Admits She’d Be Crazy To

By her own admission, Hillary Clinton would have to be crazy to run for president in 2016, which many believe the former first lady will do. In an interview with PBS’s Gwen Ifill which airs Wednesday night, Clinton was asked about a quote her husband, Bill Clinton, made during his 1992 presidential campaign when he said that the definition of “insanity” is doing the same thing over and over expecting different results. “You have to be a little bit crazy to run for president, let me just put it like that,” Clinton said. Should she run for office in 2016,

Rep. Miller: Shift Central American aid to

Washington — A Michigan Republican congresswoman wants to halt millions of dollars in aid to Central American countries — especially Mexico — and send the money to impoverished U.S. cities such as Detroit because tens of thousands of children are illegally entering the United States. U.S. Rep. Candice Miller, R-Harrison Township, vice chairwoman of the House Homeland Security Committee who heads the subcommittee on Border and Maritime Security, said at a Tuesday hearing the federal government, including the Agency for International Development, should halt aid for Central American countries because they aren’t

There´s no doubt the Obama administration is already far, far behind in the job of processing and returning the tens of thousands of unaccompanied children from Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador who have illegally crossed the border into the United States in recent months. Asked again Tuesday how many of those immigrants have been given notices to appear in court, and how many have actually shown up, White House spokesman Josh Earnest said he didn´t have the figure. "But let me just stipulate something," Earnest said. "Without knowing what that number is, and without having seen it, I think we

It’s not some shadowy anonymous source from the peshmerga’s middle management who’s claiming this, do note. It’s Nechirvan Barzani, the Kurds’ prime minister. That’s the second time in four days that a major foreign official has accused Obama’s America of being a fickle, disengaged ally. Thoughtfully considering the Kurds’ offer and declining so as not to get sucked back into Iraq would be one thing, but that’s not what happened according to Barzani. Apparently, we simply didn’t respond. The Kurds became especially alarmed at signs that ISIS had already formed a shadow government in Mosul, weeks before initiating the carefully

Almost exactly one year ago, National Journal editorial director Ron Fournier called for a special prosecutor in the IRS investigation while giving the Obama administration the “benefit of the doubt.” Now, following several hearings in which the IRS has defended the loss of Lois Lerner’s emails, Fournier regrets trusting the White House. “A year ago exactly tomorrow I called for a special prosecutor in this case while giving the president the benefit of the doubt,” he told CNN’s John King. “I now realize how naive I was to give the administration the benefit of the doubt. Josh Earnest once again faced some tough questioning from reporters on his second day as White House press secretary Tuesday, this time about missing emails tied to the IRS targeting scandal. CNN’s Jim Acosta confronted Earnest about the lack of evidence, which to him sounded like “the dog ate my homework” excuse. “On the face of it, it doesn’t sound credible,” Acosta said. Earnest pushed back, saying, “If you listen solely to the arguments that are offered up by Republicans, you might have reason to question their credibility.” Despite the alleged failure of Lois Lerner’s hard drive, Earnest highlighted that

At a marathon hearing on Monday night, congressional investigators grilled IRS Commissioner John Koskinen over the nature of the targeting scandal and the agency’s recent revelations that it lost two years’ worth of email communications from former executive Lois Lerner. The hearing was contentious with Republicans accusing Koskinen of charges ranging from ignorance of the law to the active misleading of Congress. Democrats, meanwhile, played defense by shielding the agency and the White House from criticism while accusing their GOP colleagues of playing politics. So you thought Obamacare was implemented, the controversy over? Wrong. Buckle up, here comes the "employer mandate." For people like me who want the Affordable Care Act to work but who worry about the Obama administration´s management record, this story in the Washington Post is foreboding: "Businesses Gear Up for Employer Mandate." Author Sandhya Somashekhar opens with a vignette about Kevin Settles, a forward-looking restaurateur who offered health insurance to dozens of employees in September to comply with the ACA in advance of the mandate. The employer mandate requires companies with 50 or more full-time workers to offer health insurance or pay

There are times that I have senior moments and forget certain names and events but after the recent Obama Iraq war implosion, I´m convinced most political pundits are suffering from them as well. What is unusual is that this revision of history is being committed by conservatives who should know better. Recent commentary by Glenn Beck, George Will and Charles Krauthammer indicate that they have significant memory lapses about why we went to war in Iraq. They now suggest that it was a wrong decision whereas my complaint is that we took too long to invade and oust Saddam Hussein.

One of the problems the White House faces with the huge influx of unaccompanied minors into South Texas is that it has spent weeks citing poverty and gang violence in Central America as explanation for why all these kids are fleeing northward. Today the administration announced that it would take new measures to expedite the removal of these kids. But if they had good reasons for fleeing, then how can the administration justify expediting their removal back to the places they fled? As it happens, today’s announcement is in some ways justifiable in policy terms. Yet the above question still

Republicans dropped a hammer on IRS Commissioner John Koskinen during a testy hearing covering the disappearance of emails tied to the agency´s tea party targeting scandal. The emails, covering the period January 2009 to April 2011, belonged to embattled former official Lois Lerner and could shed light on whether an expansive scheme to single out conservative groups for special scrutiny was guided by members of Congress or administration officials outside the IRS. ´The committee requested all of Lois Lerner’s emails over a year ago,´ said House Oversight Committee Chairman Rep. Noted management expert and Internal Revenue Service Commissioner John Koskinen was apparently called out of retirement — like the Ted Williams of evasive, unapologetic bureaucrats — to destroy what is left of his agency’s credibility. At immediate issue is two years of subpoenaed e-mails from former IRS official Lois Lerner to outside agencies, lost in a convenient computer crash. The possible involvement of other agencies is one focus of a congressional investigation into the heightened IRS scrutiny of conservative nonprofit groups before the 2012 election. In recent congressional testimony, Koskinen admitted that the e-mails

A week after an NBC News poll showed that the American people had lost faith in Obama´s competence and ability to lead, a new CBS News/New York Times poll has even worse news for a president embattled by his own incompetence, arrogance, and failed policies. Though Obama was still upside on approval by 5 points (43-48%) back in May, he now faces a 14 point deficit of 40-54%. ‘R-E-S-P-E-C-T,” the song goes. It is easy enough to spell, but for some vocal critics of President Barack Obama, it seems exceedingly hard to do. As the president moves toward the land of the lame ducks, his political enemies are calling for blood. That’s no shocker at this stage of a presidency. In this case, the cuts go deeper. For some, it is not enough to disagree. Some high-status public figures seem determined to demean, denigrate and ridicule the president of the United States. On June 12 the Speaker of the U.S. House stepped to a podium and insulted Obama for his handling of

With a surprisingly wide margin of victory, Congressman James Lankford won the Oklahoma Republican U.S. Senate primary, defeating former Speaker of the State House of Representatives T.W. Shannon by 23 points and avoiding a runoff election. Lankford now becomes the prohibitive favorite to replace outgoing Senator Tom Coburn, who is retiring with two years remaining in his current term. This was a very different race from the one taking place in Mississippi. Despite negative ads run against Lankford by conservative groups, the Oklahoma contest was not an example of an “establishment” Republican or RINO versus a Tea Party candidate. In

Thad Cochran’s political resurrection began with a campaign shakeup and ended with a Hail Mary television ad. Just three weeks ago, in the dead of night on June 3, the Mississippi senator’s staff sat shaken and dejected, crestfallen at the results of a primary that deprived the six-term incumbent of an electoral majority. With Cochran forced into a runoff fight against an aggressive and energetic challenger, a dark mood shadowed his backers in Washington and Mississippi.Yet almost immediately, the Cochran coalition began bouncing back. Even on that gloomy night of June 3, Cochran adviser Stuart Stevens was insisting to staffers: “We’re
