Michael Jackson’s Neverland

LOS OLIVOS, CALIF.—From outside the gates of Neverland Ranch, it appears as if Michael Jackson’s former home and fantasyland has been frozen in time. The backyard circus is long gone, but heartfelt notes placed by saddened fans at the property’s entrance remain intact five years after Jackson’s death on June 25, 2009. And visitors are still making the pilgrimage. “I figured it would just be a closed gate, but I still wanted to see it for myself,” said James Chen of Seattle, a fan who stopped outside Neverland during a recent road trip with his father. While many Jackson ventures

I thought I read somewhere that the older son would like to live there. He should be able to afford it at some point if he can peel off the relatives.

I hope it´s demolished. Perhaps the son could then build a tasteful HOME.

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Capping off a months-long lobbying effort, Cleveland has been selected to host of the 2016 Republican National Convention. Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus announced Cleveland as the GOP´s recommended location on Fox News Channel in a live, on-air interview. The broadcast of the interview was immediately preceded by a tweet, which has since been deleted, from a spokesman for the Republican Governors Association. "We´re excited about bringing the convention to Cleveland in Ohio, and we´re excited about the decision. We think it´s a smart decision," Priebus said. I´m a big fan of absurdity in politics. But even absurdity has its limits, and the National Organization for Women has surpassed it in the wake of the Supreme Court´s decision in Burwell v. Hobby Lobby. As part of its full-throated defense of ObamaCare´s contraception mandate, NOW has a list of what it calls "The Dirty 100" — entities that have sued the Department of Health and Human Services and demanded exemptions on the basis of their First Amendment right to religious expression and the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA). A massive influx of unlawful immigrants from Central America has policymakers searching for quick fix. While inadequate border security and false perceptions of U.S. immigration law have undoubtedly helped fuel the problem, they are just part of the equation. A thorough understanding requires a look further south. (Snip) In Guatemala, impunity reigns supreme. El Salvador remains home base for the most violent regional street gangs, Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) and Barrio 18 (M-18). Honduras holds the dubious honor of being the murder capital of the world, averaging 91 murders per 100,000 citizens every year. Its most dangerous city, San Pedro Sula,

For more than 35 years, the Border Patrol has referred illegal immigrants to Annunciation House in downtown El Paso, Texas, depending on the non-profit to steer them toward the social services they need while they await deportation hearings. (Snip) Garcia, who has dedicated his life to helping the poor, including illegal immigrants, now finds himself angry with the federal government for not anticipating and preparing for the border crisis, which has seen as many as 50,000 unaccompanied children from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador flood across the border. Michelle Obama is a popular first lady. On average, her favorable ratings have been higher than those of her predecessors, Laura Bush and Hillary Clinton. This may well reflect the fact that more so than other first ladies, Mrs. Obama has a stand-alone personal image. Unlike other recent first ladies, her popularity has not fallen or risen with her husband’s. How popular is Michelle? A steady two-thirds of the public has held a favorable view of Mrs. Obama, according to nationwide Gallup poll and Pew Research Center surveys, for most of her time as first lady. At 69 percent, her average

Lawsuits seek to stop work at coal mines

BILLINGS, Mont. – Coal industry representatives say lawsuits against mines in three Western states could have consequences across the U.S. as environmentalists seek changes in how mining is approved on federally owned reserves. In civil cases unfolding in Colorado, New Mexico and Montana, the group WildEarth Guardians asserts coal companies benefited from lax oversight by federal regulators. The group says the U.S. Department of Interior approved mining plans without enough public involvement, and gave little heed to the pollution caused by digging, shipping and burning coal. The group asked the courts to stop mining until the plans are re-done. The

Seattle — Randy Oliver has a pressing question as legal marijuana sales are about to begin in Washington state: Where´s all the weed? Oliver is the chief scientist at Analytical 360 in Yakima, the only lab that has been certified to test the heavily taxed marijuana that will wind up on store shelves next month. So far, just two licensed growers have turned in samples for testing, with another due to turn in a small batch next week, he told The Associated Press on Saturday. "There´s such a small stream of samples coming through," he said. "There's going to be some long lines and some high prices." The state's Liquor Control Board has been

When Do the Right Thing was released a quarter-century ago, few people could have imagined that the $6 million indie about racial tensions in America would one day be hailed as one of the great masterpieces of our time -- by the first black president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the first black president of the United States, no less. But that is precisely what happened on Friday night. In front of an overflowing crowd on the campus of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the film's writer-director-star Spike Lee signed books, attended a reception and then participated in a Q&A about the film -- introduced by

“The View” is secretly one of the most important political series of the 2000s, one that, at its peak, put forceful opposing opinions about the biggest issues of the day in front of viewers. The famous Rosie O’Donnell-Elisabeth Hasselbeck fight that prompted O’Donnell’s departure was about civilian casualties in the Iraq War — and the fact that neither O’Donnell nor Hasselbeck argued her case particularly clearly was part of the personality of the show. The show’s hosts discussed hot-button issues, and interviewed politicians, in a strikingly colloquial manner, one that seemed to update the genteel chumminess of executive producer Barbara

The economy contracted dramatically in the first quarter of 2014, according to re-revised data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis. The federal department´s initial assessment of Q1 2014 was that the nation´s economic activity had expanded slightly. After getting more data, it revised that estimate to a 1 percent contraction. The third estimate, however, is much more severe: the economy contracted 2.9 percent. But this probably won´t cause President Obama to lose too much sleep. Despite fiery statements issued by Hamas spokesmen over the past 48 hours, it was obvious Tuesday night that the Islamist movement was searching for ways to rid itself of the current escalation. Hamas feels that it has been forced into a confrontation with Israel – one that it did not want at this stage because of its increased isolation and financial crisis. The massive Israeli air strikes on the Gaza Strip over the past 24 hours have surprised Hamas and other Palestinian groups. Hamas apparently expected a limited response to the recent rocket attacks on Israeli cities and towns. But as the

President Obama’s ultimate weakness may be that he believes his own blarney. A year ago, Mr. Obama boasted in a “fireside” Web chat that his “is the most transparent administration in history.” There was not the slightest hint of irony. He may actually believe it. But three-dozen organizations representing newspapermen and other journalists, mostly liberals, beg to differ. In a testy letter to the president on Tuesday, the group decried the “slick non-answers” and cold shoulders they’re getting from Mr. Obama’s representatives, who have restricted access to any information they consider embarrassing to the administration. “The stifling of free expression,” the signers

President Barack Obama does not believe his temporary amnesty program for illegal immigrant children has exacerbated the border crisis even though the number of illegal immigrant kids crossing the border spiked the year after he unilaterally enacted the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program in 2012. In fact, Obama thinks programs like DACA and a comprehensive amnesty bill are ways to solve the border crisis.
