Women should be able to buy
the pill without a prescription

Denver Post [CO], by Cory Gardner

Original Article

The least loved institution in America today is the U.S. Senate, and one of the reasons it is reviled is a zero-sum approach to women´s medical care. It´s time we changed that and adopt modern policies that make sense instead of using women´s medical issues as an election-year power play. One of the most rational ways for Washington to break this gridlock is to approve oral contraception for over-the-counter purchases by adults. Since "the pill" was first approved 44 years ago, it´s been one of the most proven and tested pharmaceuticals of our time. It is safe, reliable, effective, and presents

"Since "the pill" was first approved 44 years ago..."

I always wonder about the accuracy of the entire article when I find a major error in the a simple historical fact.

The ´pill´ was approved for birth control by the FDA in 1960. 2014-1960 = 54 years ago.

I agree. There´s no reason for birth control pills to require a prescription. The ACA provision banning insurers from covering otc medications should be removed. This is a smart tactic on his part in the CO senate race. He´s making Udall look like fool.

The pill is generally safe for younger, non-smoking women. Other women should still be screened for female cancers annually while they are taking it.

Great idea ... take it out of politics (and Obamacare) completely.

If women want to take pills that could potentially cause them to die from a stroke/blot clot in their lungs, or from cancer ...

Thank you #6. The pill is not safe for everyone, in fact for many. It can cause cancer, blood clots, strokes and heart attacks, even in young, non-smokers. I don´t even remember why my GP refused to give me the pill, but I do know, I tend to throw clots for no apparent reason, the pill would have killed me young. No one should be taking extra hormones without a Dr.´s supervision.

Another thought on the proliferation of ´the pill´ -- all the excreted estrogen in the water supply is also ´affecting´ men and their ´potency´ --- among other deleterious ´side effects´. This is a classical example of ´unforeseen consequences´ -- and no mention or outcry in the ´media´. The ´pill´ is dangerous and certainly should not be dispensed ´over the counter´ -- anymore than steroids.

If women are going to get the pill under Obamacare it will have to be non-prescription, since no one on Obamacare will be able to get an appointment to see a doctor without waiting six months to a year.

How do you determine which pill is the right one for your physiology? There are several different pills with differing strengths, hormone mixes etc. Seems to me a doctor´s analysis would be strongly advised.

Two women of my acquaintance, both healthy and in their early thirties, nearly died from blood clotting caused by the pill. It is not without risk, and should NOT be taken without medical supervision. This is not to say it shouldn´t be available, but users need to be informed! Better off dead or maimed? How about guys wrap that rascal?

As a nurse who formerly worked in Maternal Child Care, I know that there is no way that the BCP should be available OTC. As others have noted, there are lots to choose from. There are monophasic, biphasic and triphasic pills and then there are several different dosages of the estrogens and progesterones for the different pills. There is no way that anyone not thoroughly trained could know which pill is best for them. And then there are very serious known side effects that your MD should watch for, especially when starting or changing pills. Some women should never take the pill and how would they know without their MD´s advice. Making the BCP available OTC will kill more than a few women.

Women are intelligent enough to select and use the correct birth control pill if given the opportunity to do so. If they have questions they can consult with pharmacists at their local pharmacy who have the knowledge to assist them. Many men are simply uncomfortable with the idea that women can control their sex lives and reproduction. Ask around and you will find that very few young women actually see a doctor to get a prescription for birth control pills. They see a physician´s assistant who is almost always a woman. Everything in life comes with risks, automobiles are much more dangerous than birth control pills.

I think Gardner is coming out with this because in Colorado, several Republican politicians running for office have lost because the opposition has run ads stating that this or that Republican candidate "wants to make birth control illegal." A variation on that is that the politician "wants to outlaw reproductive rights." Unbelievably (to me), it´s been successful.

Amazing how everyone is jumping up and down for all natural organic produce, free range eggs along with hormone free milk and poultry. Not only do many want the hormones in their bodies to develop big muscles for " body building," these women want to "mislead" their reproductive system to believe they are not pregnant. HELLO! We know what Steroid Hormones do to animals and yet we refuse to accept what is does to the male and female human bodies. Stop poisoning ourselves. Natural Family Planning works for many married couples and it works today!. My wife and I used it for twenty years without failure. It takes simple understanding of how the bodies work. The ability to say no during a possible or probable fertile time. SELF CONTROL??? Can you handle it? We did and live happy, healthy lives. Cost... Thermometer, paper, pencil and commitment to doing NFP correctly. COMMITMENT??? Call yourself a real man or woman? Prove it. Do you rule your body or does your body rule you? Save money! Safe your body or the body of your spouse from poisoning. http://www.natural-family-planning.info/

"Reliable": How many contraceptive accidents have lead to a pregnancy and subsequently abortion?. Statistics if any available are "top secret" because they may undermine the agenda.

"Safe" What have been the effects on the "males" of every species of all that estrogen in the waters ways and the recirculated water extracted from those same waterways? Can you hear the birds whistling?. Pollution of the environment is not a crime against humanity, when it comes to the feminist agenda.

The eternal principle has always been: Defy nature at your own risk. In due course it will always turn around and bite you hard in the behind.

Deport them all, not just the latest huddled masses yearning to live for free, forever, in Section 8 housing on EBT cards. President Obama’s recent campaign-style adventures outside of the White House bubble are a chance for the president to shed the confines of his office, relishing the beer, barbecue, and face-to-face conversations with everyday Americans he wistfully describes as too inaccessible as president. But the more frequently “the bear gets loose”, as the president and top staffers jokingly refer to the unscheduled forays away from the White House grounds, the more heartburn the president causes for the Secret Service agents charged with protecting his life. At the top of my list would be his habit of relentlessly berating his political opponents at the same time he’s asking for their help. Convinced that the huge recent influx of undocumented women and children from Central America requires an emergency federal response, Obama asked last week for nearly $4 billion in emergency funds from Congress. But even while making this supplemental request, Obama couldn’t resist relentlessly mocking the very House Republicans whose votes he needs. “This should not be hard,” Obama explained dismissively. “Congress

In remarks framed as a message to the American public, actor Jon Voight emotionally aired his political grievances for several minutes in a televised statement on Saturday. Those grievances range from (but are not limited to) Benghazi, the IRS scandal, the "targeting" of conservative filmmaker Dinesh D´Souza, illegal immigration, the Hobby Lobby Supreme Court case, the treatment of war veterans, the chaos in Iraq and deep reservations about President Obama.
