What will finally be the last straw?

There is a name for what the government did to the Washington Redskins last week. It is called extortion. Extortion, as defined by Merriam-Webster’s, is the crime of getting money from someone by the use of force or threats. I much prefer the definition in the 1828 dictionary compiled by Noah Webster himself: “The act or practice of wresting any thing from a person by force, duress, menaces, authority, or by any undue exercise.” You probably heard the story about how the U.S. Office of Patents and Trademarks has canceled the Redskins’ trademark on the team name because the team’s

Received this email the other day:

Here is an email sent to Clarence Page of the Chicago Tribune after an
article he published concerning a name change for the Washington Redskins.
Dear Mr. Page...
I always love your articles. and I generally agree with them. I would
suggest, as in an email I received, they change the name to the "Foreskins" to better represent their community, paying tribute to the dick heads in Congress.

Here are some other politically correct issues to consider: I agree with our
Native American population. I am highly insulted by the racially charged
name of the Washington Redskins. One might argue that to name a professional football team after Native Americans would exalt them as fine warriors, but nay, nay. We must be careful not to offend, and in the spirit of political correctness and courtesy, we must move forward. Let´s ditch the Kansas City Chiefs, the Atlanta Braves and the Cleveland Indians. If your shorts are in a wad because of the reference the name Redskins makes to skin color, then we need to get rid of the Cleveland Browns.

The Carolina Panthers obviously were named to keep the memory of
militant Blacks from the 60´s alive. Gone. It´s offensive to us
white folk. The New York Yankees offend the Southern population. Do you see a team named for the Confederacy? No! There is no room for any reference to that tragic war that cost this country so many young men´s lives.

cont.

I am also offended by the blatant references to the Catholic religion among
our sports team names. Totally inappropriate to have the New Orleans
Saints, the Los Angeles Angels or the San Diego Padres. Then there are the team names that glorify criminals who raped and pillaged. We are talking about the horrible Oakland Raiders, the Minnesota Vikings,
the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Pittsburgh Pirates!

Now, let us address those teams that clearly send the wrong message to our children. The San Diego Chargers promote irresponsible fighting or even spending habits. Wrong message to our children. The New York Giants and the San Francisco Giants promote obesity, a growing
childhood epidemic. Wrong message to our children. The Cincinnati Reds promote downers/barbiturates . Wrong message to our children. The Milwaukee Brewers---well that goes without saying . . . Wrong message to
our children.

So, there you go. We need to support any legislation that comes out
to rectify this travesty, because the government will likely become
involved with this issue, as they should. Just the kind of thing the
do-nothing congress loves . .. .

As a die hard Oregon State fan, my wife and I, with all of this in mind, it
might also make some sense to change the name of the Oregon State women´s athletic teams to something other than "the Beavers."

Once again another excellent article from the author. Appreciated his: "Obviously the team mascot was selected not because people DON’T respect Indians as warriors, but because they do. To argue otherwise turns reality on its head". Outgunned & outmanned they still fought on to keep their land & livelihood --- & that´s despicable, why?

He also quotes from Atlas Shrugged - prophetic. Makes me think of an old song "Stop the World, I Want to get off".

We´re in the Age of Umbrage, political correctness on the march, a forced march. And increasingly today´s PC is weaponized with coercion and government edicts like with this Redskins/Patent Office outrage. The Left uses PC for distraction and to close out debate. The intellectual dishonesty of it all is simply breathtaking, not to mention the trampling of traditional rights like ownership. And not satisfied to merely cripple academia with PC, now any and every aspect of life is now fair game for PC, and docile conformity is their aim. Or else!!!

Kudos in the highest to the letter posted in #2. A nation of people who can chuckle appreciatively at satirical common sense might yet overturn the current insanity.

That said, let´s not lose sight of what the USPTO has and hasn´t done. By canceling the "Redskins" trademark registration it has simply denied the team the right of exclusivity to the mark. It has NOT barred the team from using it -- and, more to the point, it has opened the mark to use by ANYONE ELSE who may be so inclined.

So, in keeping with the spirit of the game, enterprising Americans should waste not a minute in bringing all manner of Redskins products (use your imagination here) to market. By law, neither the Washington Redskins nor the USPTO can stop them.

I should have known it was too good to be true. For a brief, shining moment it appeared as though the Montana Republican Party was standing up to be counted. At the party’s state convention in Billings last weekend, delegates voted overwhelmingly against continuing to allow nonparty members to vote in their primary elections. Whoa! That would be revolutionary! In order to help select Republican candidates, you would actually have to declare you were a Republican! Outrageous, said the Democrats! We often don’t have anyone to vote for in our own primaries, and we don’t want to be deprived of the opportunity to

All right-minded people hate discrimination. It’s too bad we no longer know what that is. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, one of the most recent government agencies created by Congress in homage to the oppressive world of “Atlas Shrugged,” was in the news last month because it announced (in showy communist self-criticism fashion) that it had been guilty of massive discrimination against its own employees. What the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau really does is anyone’s guess. In essence, it shakes down banks and other lenders and financial companies in an effort to keep the 1 percent on their toes and let

One of the many signs of the imminent collapse of the United States is that we can’t even agree on the meaning of treason any more. [SNIP] Because now we have a country that doesn’t heap calumny upon the head of a traitor, but rather looks to lionize him, reward him and turn him into a culture hero. I am speaking, of course, of Edward Snowden — a criminal who makes Benedict Arnold look like a rank amateur when it comes to treason.

As we celebrate the ultimate sacrifices of hundreds of thousands of Americans who died in the defense of liberty, perhaps it is fitting that we pause for a moment of silence to contemplate the imminent loss of the Constitution which they had sworn to uphold. What if everything you know is fake? That is a premise that was repeatedly explored by author Philip K. Dick in his science fiction novels. Some of his stories have been made into popular films such as “Total Recall,” where a blue collar worker in the far future doesn’t know whether he is really a secret agent or just pretending to be one [SNIP] I suppose we should not be surprised that so many people prefer to hang on to their illusions about how America works than to admit that so much of what they know just isn’t so, as

The last few weeks I’ve explored ways in which liberals have worked to undermine conservatives in the American political scene. This week, let’s look at one typical instance of so-called conservatives shooting themselves in the foot. Examples of this abound, and you will forgive me if I don’t make a laundry list of all the ways in which Republicans are played for suckers by Democrats. That would be too painful. Instead, let’s just look at the virtual surrender of traditional values expressed by Speaker of the House John Boehner last week while campaigning in his home district in Ohio.
