McCarthy Has Much to Prove,
and Five Months to Do It

National Journal, by Tim Alberta & Billy House

Original Article

Whoever wins Thursday’s leadership elections had better enjoy their new positions, because they could be snatched back five months from now. Disillusionment runs deep in today’s House Republican Conference. Members across the ideological spectrum are frustrated with the policy-making process under Speaker John Boehner and tired of the feuding between factions. Majority Leader Eric Cantor’s stunning primary loss provided an opportunity to address both issues by bringing fresh blood into the leadership and pressing something of a reset button. But Thursday’s election is unlikely to calm the waters. In fact, things might get a whole lot rockier with November’s conference elections looming

He has some issues coming up which will be telling. Reauthorizing the import-export bank is a small issue but I think it will be very telling on what direction leadership goes. I hope they let it die.

Matt Salmon is a really fine man. He´s one who won´t hide and speak on condition of anonymity.

In addition to GOP Conference elections, there is also a certain general election in NOvember. Do not take our votes for granted. While we may not have the power to guarantee your victory, we likely have the power to deny it.

Narrow Tea Party Loss in Mississippi
Emboldens Its Senate Bid in Tennessee

LASCASSAS, Tenn. — As Senator Thad Cochran eked out a victory over a conservative insurgent on Tuesday in Mississippi, Tea Party members here were making a bold — even defiant — proclamation: They will win the Senate seat in Tennessee. The activists hope a little-known state representative, Joe Carr, a self-described underdog who has attacked efforts to overhaul the nation’s immigration laws, can oust the Republican incumbent, Lamar Alexander, 73, the former governor and two-time presidential candidate who began working on Capitol Hill in the late 1960s.

On June 12—now a full two weeks back—three Israeli teenage boys were kidnapped in Judea (part of the West Bank) on their way home from a religious school there. They were Naftali Frenkel, 16 (a dual Israeli-U.S. citizen), Gilad Shaar (16), and Eyal Ifrach (19). Since then Israeli security forces have conducted a massive manhunt in Judea that has included searching caves, wells, and reservoirs. They have turned up nothing. We do know what organization was behind the abduction—Hamas, as publicly confirmed by Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu. Israel’s internal security agency has just recently announced the identity of the main kidnappers,

UPLAND, Calif. -- A California family says they´ve fired their live-in nanny, but the woman refuses to leave their home. Marcela and Ralph Bracamonte, who have three children, told CBS Los Angeles they´ve tried everything, including legal measures, to get the woman to leave their home in Upland in San Bernardino County. The Bracamontes said the first couple of months with Diane Stretton were fine, but then the 64-year-old woman stopped working and complained of health issues. At that point, the Bracamontes say, they told Stretton it wasn´t working out and asked her to move out of their home. But

The U.S. space shuttle program retired in 2011, leaving American astronauts to hitchhike into orbit. But after three long years, NASA´s successor is almost ready to make an entrance. Orion, the agency´s newest manned spaceship, is being prepared for its first mission in December. In future missions, it will journey into deep space -- to Mars and beyond -- farther than humans have ever gone before. Orion comes loaded with superlatives. It boasts the largest heat shield ever built and a computer 400 times faster than the ones on the space shuttles. It will be launched into space on the most powerful

WASHINGTON -- Before a unanimous Supreme Court weighed in, the White House had brushed off claims that President Barack Obama was exceeding his executive authority as just so much grousing from frustrated partisans. Then, in a 9-0 decision Thursday, the high court ruled that at least in one case Obama had gone too far. For Republicans, the court´s decision that Obama violated the Constitution in 2012 when he appointed members to the National Labor Relations Board without Senate confirmation validated their argument that Obama has acted against the law when he has taken matters into his own hands. President Obama is now reaching terminal velocity, like a skydiver plunging toward earth. Except he doesn’t have a parachute. There’s a mighty splat coming soon. With his approval rating at 40 percent, down 6 points from early June, and just 29 percent of Americans convinced the country is on the “right track,” the president is doubling down on his strategy of blaming Republicans for his failures. And he’s shifting into hyperpartisan drive, traveling the country to campaign for Democrats, many of whom wish he’d just stay away. Sales of Hillary Rodham Clinton’s new memoir, “Hard Choices,” declined 43.5 percent to 48,000 copies in its second week on the shelves, according to Nielsen BookScan. The sales figures put pressure on the publisher, Simon & Schuster, which paid Mrs. Clinton a multimillion-dollar advance to write about her time at the State Department and has invested heavily in the book’s rollout, one of the biggest of the year. About 85,000 copies were sold in the week after the book’s June 10 release, according to BookScan, a subscription service that tracks sales at over 80 percent of book vendors in the United States.

President Obama spoke to the League of Conservation Voters Wednesday night about climate change, and he took a few minutes to mock Republican climate change skeptics who state very openly they “don’t believe anything scientists say” and actually believe it’s a “hoax” or a “liberal plot.” The president found it amazing that there are Republicans who constantly preface comments on climate change with the phrase “I’m not a scientist.” To Obama, that sounds a lot like “I accept that man-made climate change is real, but if I say so out loud, I will be run out of town by a bunch

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Army sergeant recently released from captivity by the Taliban is in something of a legal limbo as the investigation continues into why and how he left his post in Afghanistan five years ago and ended up in insurgents´ hands. They said he has not been read his legal rights and has not asked for a lawyer. But the officials said the military team helping him recover from his imprisonment has told him

WASHINGTON -- Strange bedfellows, indeed. The Obama administration has found itself in a foreign policy and national security pickle of rare complexity with the apparent entry of Syria into the Iraq conflict on the side of the U.S.-backed government in Baghdad, as well as active Iranian military support for Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. Washington already was toeing a delicate line with Shiite Iran, which the U.S. deems the world´s most active state sponsor of terrorism, over their common short-term interest in turning back the advance of militant Sunni rebels in Iraq. Now, to its dismay, Syrian President Bashar Assad - regarded in

They had plenty of excuses: They aren’t kingmakers; the establishment GOP gamed the system; the mainstream media was in the bag for the incumbent. ngraham, who elevated Brat’s profile in his Virginia district further than his own campaign could ever have done, said McDaniel should

Lois Lerner, the controversial director of the tax-exempt organizations division at the Internal Revenue Service, has a long sordid history of targeting conservatives. Under the direction of Lois Lerner, the Federal Election Commission sued the Christian Coalition in the 1990s. She harassed the Christian Coalition for three election cycles. Eventually, she lost her case. At one point Lerner even asked a targeted conservative if Pat Robertson prayed over him. (Sound familiar?) In 1996, while at the FEC, Lois Lerner harassed Republican Senate candidate Al Salvi and made him this outrageous offer, “Promise me you will never run for office again, and

Republicans are in the strongest position to win back the Senate since losing it eight years ago. Over several months, the party has expanded its range of targeted seats, and the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) has helped defeat insurgents it didn’t want representing the GOP in the midterm elections. This sober realization came to Democrats on Wednesday, as Tuesday night’s primary results showed they cannot count on Tea Party candidates upsetting more-electable incumbents. And Democrats are increasingly realizing that President Obama’s approval rating will probably remain mired at 45 percent or lower until

Decades of socialist/progressive indoctrination in our schools, media, and culture, plus six years of Obama, have yielded a devastating unspoken consequence. It is the loss of who we use to be as Americans. In his 1961 Inaugural Address, President John F. Kennedy said, “My fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.” Democrats have perverted Kennedy´s inspiring challenge. Their dispiriting goal is to have as many Americans as possible controlled by and dependent on government, even for life itself, which is at the root of ObamaCare.
