The Crumbling Cultural Foundations
of American Democracy

National Interest Magazine, by John Allen Gay

Original Article

There was a minor kerfuffle in the press last week when reporters began picking through the academic writings of David Brat, the Virginian economics professor who bested House Majority Leader Eric Cantor in a Republican primary. Brat had written that “If you refuse to pay your taxes, you will lose. You will go to jail, and if you fight, you will lose. The government holds a monopoly on violence. Any law that we vote for is ultimately backed by the full force of our government and military.” That sentence, “The government holds a monopoly on violence,” was held up by a number of publications—the Wall Street Journal

This article should be a long-time must read.
Mr Gay has captured the core of the social revolution which is dissolving the bonds which once bound us together. His remarks are not easily comprehended and require some thinking.
"Liberal education, for example, cannot take root in a culture which is intolerant of dissent or suspicious of originality. "
Now there is a marvelous summary of our current war on ideas.

How do we recover what once made E Pluribus Unum?

For me, the idea of America was to share our values, respect for life, capitalist system which made us that Shining City on the Hill and the GREATEST nation on earth with the rest of the world.
What has happened, thanks to the left and the likes of 0bama, is import failed third world values and parasitic immorality thereby diluting the good and exceptionalism that once was the hallmark of America.
I´m afraid we´re on the brink of another dark period in world history.

For those interested in the decline of American culture, its causes and effects, an excellent source is

Robert H. Bork, "Slouching Towards Gomorrah: Modern Liberalism and American Decline," Reagan Books, New York, 1996.

It´s nearly 20 years old but still valid.

I draw my perspective from the Declaration of Independence. Our government exists at the consent of the people. The consent of the people is conditional. Those conditions are founded upon self evident truths and the recognition of unalienable rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. These rights come from the laws of nature and the laws of God.

In their benevolence our founders were inclusive welcoming anyone believing in the founding values consenting to be governed within boundaries consistent with those values. This benevolence has been distorted to mean anything goes. We never were intended to be a safe haven for honor killing or any other behavior so diametrically opposed to the bonds that tie us together. To adjust core founding values is a path to anarchy.

We are intended to be a representative republic, not a democracy, nor anarchy, nor a totalitarian state as our government seems to think. The reality has strayed wildly from the intent in the Declaration of Independence and the constitutional implementation of that intent.

We all here know we are ´supposed´ to be a representative republic, not a democracy. Democracy is a generic term like Kleenix for tissues.

The problem is we the people are NOT being represented by the Congress. That´s the real problem.

The problem is we the people are NOT electing the politicians who responsibly fill the offices to which they were elected, be they in the Executive of Legislative branch.

American voters have the authority and the RESPONSIBILITY to vote for better people but doing so requires effort on the part of the people, namely:
* Effort to understand the issues and both the short-term and long term-implications of various approaches to those issues
* Effort to go beyond the hollow rhetoric frequently offered by candidates and press those candidates for in-depth answers regarding their positions on issues
* Effort to actually cast a vote for the candidate of their choice. Voter turnout in recent mid-term primary elections has been pathetically small

It is critical that Republicans take control of the Senate in the November elections. Harry Reid has abused the power of the Senate Majority leader by refusing to bring bills passed by the House to the floor of the Senate for debate, potential amendment and a vote. Reid has severely limited the ability of the minority to offer amendments and have them voted on thus denying many in the Senate the ability to express the desires of those who elected them.

American voters hold the power to change the situation. They must exercise that power in a responsible way if they are dissatisfied.

Reid has acted to protect Democrat senators from voting on issues that would threaten their reelections and has sheltered Obama from taking a position on issues and forced him to eit

The CPSC Takes on Sparklers

This Fourth of July the federal government is issuing dire warnings to protect children from the menace of sparklers. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has released intense stick figure videos and posters warning that children should never be allowed to hold a sparkler, due to fire hazards. “Yes, we do not recommend children use sparklers, as they burn at about 2,000 degrees, which is hotter than a blow torch,” Nychelle Fleming, a spokesperson for the CPSC told the Washington Free Beacon. A 2012 video entitled “Un-Sparktacular Celebration” features a stick figure family who let their children use sparklers unsupervised.

A few years back I wrote book on the faith of Hillary Clinton. To this day it jolts liberals and conservatives alike that I, a principled Reagan conservative, would have written God and Hillary Clinton: A Spiritual Life, especially on the heels of books I did on the faiths of Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush. Conservatives were incredulous, annoyed that I took Hillary’s faith so seriously.(Snip)Well, I’m here today to underscore that those onetime claims are completely gone. Last year, Hillary Clinton embraced gay marriage, moving to the left of even her socially liberal denomination, the United Methodist Church.

Shortly before Ronald Reagan was sworn in as president, I wrote a column suggesting we call off the inauguration — because the president-elect’s brother, Neil, had just disclosed that their Irish grandfather, Michael, had snuck into America. “He was probably one of the early wetbacks, except that he came in from Canada instead of Mexico,” Neil told The Los Angeles Times. What kind of signal, I asked, would we be sending if we swore in Reagan as president? We’d be saying that no matter how you got in to America, if you could find a wife and raise a family, you could become

The tax agency’s inspector general has been warning for years of lost computer equipment, lax security that could place private taxpayers’ information at risk, and mishandled information technology contracts that wasted tens of millions of dollars. The reports are being disclosed as the IRS says its technology budget is strapped for cash, one reason the agency didn’t have a backup system to store all of Ms. Lerner’s emails that are the subject of a congressional investigation. “We are provided significant amounts of money but significantly less than we

Seinfeld premiered 25 years ago this week — but even the most dedicated viewers of its era probably missed its inaugural episode. Dumped in a graveyard slot as a mid-summer replacement, the series (which was then titled The Seinfeld Chronicles) was given just four episodes to justify its existence when it hit the airwaves in 1989. From those inauspicious origins came Seinfeld, the sitcom juggernaut that served as appointment viewing for more than 76 million Americans at its peak. Even in syndication, Seinfeld remains master of its domain; though it hasn´t produced a new episode since 1998, the series has earned

You know the saying: Go big or go home. And we all know they’re not going home. How does “unilateral legalization for all illegals” grab you? [I]n the wake of Obama’s Monday Rose Garden speech vowing unilateral action, some reformers want the president to go far beyond a limited expansion of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, to essentially legalize the millions of undocumented immigrants who would be eligible for work permits under the bill passed by the Senate last summer. “The administration has unquestionable legal authority to provide all those who would qualify for citizenship under the bipartisan Senate Bill

The Wendy Davis campaign is having a tough time convincing Texas voters that she would make a good governor, and the video above might be a good reason why – they couldn’t name a single legislative accomplishment of hers. They sound just like Hillary Clinton supporters! Liberals were infuriated when a conservative labeled Davis the “Abortion Barbie” for the way she was glamorously glorified after filibustering a Texas bill that would have raised medical standards at abortion clinics. Ironically, that’s the only thing a supporter mentions in the interviews, made outside the 2014 Texas Democrat Convention. Recent polls have Davis

Other examples include $300,000 to address UCLA in March and $225,000 for a speech scheduled to occur in October at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas.
