Obama will propose vast expansion
of Pacific Ocean marine sanctuary

Washington Post, by Juliet Eilperin

President Obama on Tuesday will announce his intent to make a broad swath of the central Pacific Ocean off-limits to fishing, energy exploration and other activities, according to senior White House officials. The proposal, slated to go into effect later this year after a comment period, could create the world’s largest marine sanctuary and double the area of ocean globally that is fully protected. The announcement — details of which were provided to The Washington Post — is part of a broader push on maritime issues by an administration that has generally favored other environmental priorities. The oceans effort, led by Secretary

The dark Won has that problem licked. He just hires more and expects WTP to pay top dollar for them. Had enough yet? More to come at an ´unexpected´ time.

No, superstar movie director Steven Spielberg did not poach a dinosaur and then have a picture taken showing him with his trophy kill. Hard to believe, right? Well, a photo posted on Facebook meant to be satire went viral -- being shared more than 30,000 times, because so many people not only believed it was real but also were furious at the "Jurassic Park" director. The post by Jay Branscomb on his page happened days after Facebook deleted photos from the page of Kendall Jones, a 19-year-old Texas cheerleader and hunter who posted numerous photos of herself posing with a

Give him the money! Republicans in Congress need to stifle their hostility towards President Obama, and approve his emergency request for funds to alleviate our border disaster. Only by signing on for the $3.7 billion “fix” will the GOP place this “urgent humanitarian crisis” squarely in Mr. Obama’s lap, where it belongs. As House Speaker John Boehner recently said, Obama has been president for five and a half years; it’s time he took responsibility for something, and this border mess is a good place to start. The flood of young unaccompanied minors across our border is a catastrophe – for the children

SILVER SPRINGS, Md. -- After seven years translating for the highest levels of the U.S. and Afghan military, Hameed Afzali was a marked man. Afghans would see him interpreting on Afghanistan National Television, which instantly made him a target. A note from the Taliban left on the door of a family business threatened his family. "Don´t think that this is just a paper. I will get you there," the note read. He knew it was time to come to the U.S. "That was the only choice that we had. We had to move here." He secured one of 3,000 visas

WASHINGTON -- Welcome to Barack Obama´s split-screen presidency. On one side: a confident Obama making campaign-style stops around the country and ridiculing his political opponents to the delight of cheering supporters. On the other side: an increasingly unpopular president hobbled by gridlock on Capitol Hill and a steady stream of vexing foreign policy crises. Obama has long sought refuge outside of Washington when his frustrations with the nation´s capital reach a boiling point. But his ability to rally public support in a way that results in progress for his legislative agenda has perhaps never been weaker than it is as he nears

A Meridian man has recanted — sort of — his story that he helped U.S. Sen. Thad Cochran´s campaign buy votes for $15 each in Lauderdale County. Stevie Fielder now says he was asked to buy votes — by someone he won´t identify — but that he refused because "I would be in jail because that´s illegal." He says he has talked with the state attorney general´s office. "I haven´t done anything illegal," said Fielder, who made national news after a lengthy interview with GotNews.com. In that audio-recorded interview, Fielder said he received thousands of dollars in envelopes from Cochran campaign staffer

Hillary Clinton has responded to criticism of her six figure speaking fees by noting much of the money has gone to her family´s foundation. This has led some Republicans to wonder whether the foundation funds political operations for Clinton, who is considered the Democratic frontrunner in the 2016 presidential election. However, a source close to Clinton told Business Insider she "personally" pays for her staff. "The Secretary´s personal staff is paid for by her personally," the source said. The source also noted Clinton draws no salary from the foundation. On Tuesday, the conservative America Rising PAC published a blog post featuring five "burning

Journalists have been fuming for years over the administration’s failure to live up to President Obama’s promises of transparent government. But it’s even worse than you thought. The focus, naturally, has been on the White House, where reporters press for scraps of information in the briefing room and news photographers are sometimes barred from events, supplanted by official photogs whose work amounts to propaganda. But it turns out the problem is even more insidious where the real day-to-day business of government gets done, in federal departments and agencies. In an unusual alliance, a number of journalism organizations have banded together to denounce what they

With the crisis in the Middle East escalating as Israel and Hamas continue to exchange missile fire, renewed attention has come to Israel´s defense system, the Iron Dome. The anti-missile defense system has been responsible for intercepting militant rockets targeted at Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, Israel´s two largest cities. As seen in video footage taken by ABC News, the Iron Dome intercepts missiles mid-air in a matter of seconds. First, the system identifies incoming missiles and then determines whether their range and direction threatens a highly populated area, like a city. WASHINGTON -- Military officers testified that there was no "stand-down order" that held back military assets that could have saved the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans killed at a diplomatic outpost and CIA annex in Benghazi, Libya. Their testimony undercut the contention of Republican lawmakers. The "stand-down" theory centers on a Special Operations team - a detachment leader, a medic, a communications expert and a weapons operator with his foot in a cast - that was stopped from flying from Tripoli to Benghazi after the attacks of Sept. 11-12, 2012, had ended. Despite fiery statements issued by Hamas spokesmen over the past 48 hours, it was obvious Tuesday night that the Islamist movement was searching for ways to rid itself of the current escalation. Hamas feels that it has been forced into a confrontation with Israel – one that it did not want at this stage because of its increased isolation and financial crisis. The massive Israeli air strikes on the Gaza Strip over the past 24 hours have surprised Hamas and other Palestinian groups. Hamas apparently expected a limited response to the recent rocket attacks on Israeli cities and towns. But as the

President Obama on Thursday claimed he is “not that partisan of a guy” as he mocked calls in the Republican Party for his impeachment. The president spent much of his address in Austin, Texas, hammering congressional Republicans, saying they have "blocked or voted down every serious idea to strengthen the middle class." “I’m just telling the truth now," Obama said. "I don´t have to run for office again so I can just let her rip.” He teed off on Republicans such as Sarah Palin who have suggested in recent days that he be impeached, and dismissed Speaker John Boehner´s (R-Ohio) proposed lawsuit

Bears, beer and horse heads: What exactly is going on with the leader of the free world? On a single day this week in Denver, President Obama scarfed down pizza and drinks with strangers, shot pool with Colorado’s governor and shook hands with a guy on the street wearing a horse mask. His top staffers are promoting these stops on Twitter with the hashtag #TheBearIsLoose — a term one of Obama’s aides coined in 2008 when the candidate would defy his schedule. However, he admitted to being perplexed as to why there’s such an opposition stating there’s a need for not only low-skill labor “particularly in the agricultural areas and hospitality areas,” but high-skill labor of “those in the STEM fields.” Partial transcript as follows: STEPHEN HAYES, Weekly Standard: You

The facts are simple. The IRS systematically targeted conservative and Tea Party groups after their activism proved decisive in the 2010 midterm elections—Obama’s famous “shellacking.” The effects of this targeting were widespread. Some Tea Party groups were neutered in the months before the 2012 presidential election. Few of the explanations or justifications of this targeting provided by IRS leaders and Obama administration officials have held up. IRS officials at first denied that any targeting had taken place. That was false. They later claimed that the targeting had involved only low-level employees in the Cincinnati office. That was false. They argued
