Tony Gwynn Jr. will rise in Philadelphia on Sunday morning and wait for the call from the West Coast. It’s Father’s Day, of course, and Gwynn’s heart will bubble with joy when he hears the voices of his wife and three young daughters who are still back home in San Diego finishing up the school year. After receiving all those long-distance Father’s Day hugs from his girls, Gwynn will place a call right back to the West Coast to deliver some Father’s Day love of his own. “I always try to get in an I love you,” he said. “For a while

Baghdad - Al-Qaeda offshoot the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) on Sunday published a series of gruesome photos to one of the group’s Twitter accounts that purported to show the jihadists executing dozens of men in Iraq’s Salahuddin province, north of Baghdad. The graphic photos showed men in civilian clothes lying face down, shoulder to shoulder, with their hands bound in a ditch surrounded by yellow fields, as a row of masked fighters fired into the ditch. Blood pooled from one man’s head. It was impossible to verify the authenticity of the photos. By Sunday afternoon, Twitter appeared to have suspended the account.

There is no question among researchers that fathers who spend time with their children instill self-control and social skills in their offspring. Exactly how dads do that, however, is largely a mystery. Thousands of studies have sliced and diced the benefits for children of a close, nurturing bond with Mom. Researchers have a harder time analyzing the ways fathers interact with children, such as rough-and-tumble play. (Snip)Animal studies, however, show that baby rats deprived of rough-and-tumble are more aggressive and lack social skills as adults.

When news first broke about the existence of a federal insider-trading probe into billionaire Carl Icahn, golfer Phil Mickelson and sports gambler William Walters, Icahn was quick to point out that he and Mickelson didn’t know each other. Now, it appears that there really isn’t any connection between Icahn and Mickelson. The New York Times reported on Wednesday night that Mickelson did not trade shares of Clorox CLX -0.85% in 2011. Initial reports about the insider-trading probe said that federal investigators were examining trading of Clorox by Mickelson and Walters around the time that Icahn was launching a takeover effort

No specifics on the victim or when he died were released. “The history of this fourth patient, including extensive travel to Europe and the Middle East, supports the likelihood that infection occurred outside the United States,” the CDC said in a statement. The disease is a rare, degenerative fatal brain

At any other time, the growing crisis on the Mexican border, with tens of thousands of unaccompanied young people crossing illegally into the United States, might dominate the news. Yet the situation has received less attention than it might amid the furor over House Majority Leader Eric Cantor´s primary defeat, the collapse of Iraq, the continuing Bergdahl matter, and Hillary Clinton´s book tour. In an astonishing challenge to traditional Catholic doctrine, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, nominally Catholic, has taken to telling San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone that he should not attend the National Organization for Marriage’s June 19 march on the Supreme Court in Washington D.C. Liberal writer Mickey Kaus had enough of Murphy´s nonsense and slammed him on Twitter on Friday evening. Kaus became Brat´s de facto press secretary and top advocate on Twitter in the last months of the campaign because Kaus, like Brat, opposes amnesty for illegal immigrants because it would hurt American workers. He mentioned to Murphy that talk radio host Laura Ingraham

RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. – It´s perhaps appropriate that President Barack Obama is vacationing this weekend in California, where the state flag features a roaming grizzly. The restless president, who has compared himself to a caged animal on recent wanderings by declaring the "bear is loose," took a long Father´s Day weekend away with his wife and older daughter. The visit to the desert resort area of Palm Springs is one of the ways Obama has been trying to escape during his sixth year cloistered in the White House. Anaheim, CA - President Obama, appearing emboldened after his recent move to cut carbon emissions from coal-fired power plants, on Saturday ridiculed members of Congress who deny climate change or plead scientific ignorance as an alibi for avoiding an uncomfortable truth. Speaking in gleefully sarcastic terms to a commencement ceremony at the University of California, Irvine, Mr. Obama likened those who deny climate change to people who would have told John F. Kennedy, at the dawn of the space program, that the moon “was made of cheese.” He saved his most scathing words for lawmakers who say they are not qualified to

Members of Congress called on President Obama Sunday to link up with Arab allies and quell a quick-moving crisis in Iraq, where Islamic militants swept toward Baghdad and left a bloody trail in their wake. Republican lawmakers said the administration has sat on the sidelines for too long as sectarian violence threatens to undo what U.S. troops accomplished during the war in Iraq. The bloodshed spurred by militants from an al Qaeda splinter group could topple the country’s fragile government while civil war rages in neighboring Syria, they said, offering a magnet for extremists from Iran and even western nations.
