Marine Stuns the Crowd with
4th Verse of Star Spangled Banner
Lyrics Most Americans Have Never Heard

Independent Journal Review, by Kyle Becker

In this classic video, a Marine with a powerful voice stunned a patriotic crowd in 2010 by singing the stirring fourth verse of The Star Spangled Banner, which many Americans have never heard. A look at Francis Scott Key’s soaring lyrics, first written in 1814 and made our national anthem in 1931, shows it is not just a pleasant ode to our flag that can be sung at sporting events and on the Fourth of July, but is a vision for the United States. Here are the full lyrics: Oh, say can you see by the dawn’s early light~What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight,

It´s funny, this is the verse I´m most familiar with. My dad was a broadcaster. When I was a kid tv stations signed off fairly early with the Star Spangled Banner. The station my dad worked for used this verse to sign off. I must have listened to it a thousand times. I love it so much.

I read a few years ago that during WW2 if the authorities on the home front thought someone they were questioning was a spy, they would ask them to sing the 2nd verse of the Star Spangled Banner. If they knew the words then they knew they were a spy.Obviously, I was born just after the end of the war, so I do not know if this was true.

Every high school choir sings the Battle Hymn of the Republic. School boards cringe at:

In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea,
With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me.
As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free,
While God is marching on.

We also learned all of the verses of The Anthem in grade school late 60´s-early 70´s.

I always liked this verse because it seemed to look to our future as a nation...not only to commemorate the victory the Battle of Baltimore.

It´s more meaningful now than ever before.

We learned all four verses and sang them regularly throughout elementary school and beyond.

I still vote in the unusual stand-alone auditorium at my elementary school - a reduced size facsimile of a regular auditorium with fixed seats on a rear-sloping floor, two aisles, a stage with back stage, and a box office (I think those velvet curtains may be the same ones!).

It is fun to go back there to vote , see everything the same, and remember doing the Christmas pageant - the birth of Christ - from the King James Bible every Christmas.

It is also instructive to understand that the words of the third verse, "And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle’s confusion,
A home and a country should leave us no more!
Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps’ pollution..." refers to the hated British monarchy of the that era.

One should remember that the lyrics were written during the War of 1812 where the British came to attack us on our home soil AFTER our independence.

A rare case of Pneumonic plague has been diagnosed in a patient who is hospitalized in Colorado. Health officials say it is the first confirmed case in the state since 2004. Plague was also confirmed in the family dog, after the dog died unexpectedly. The plague -- the illness that killed millions of people across Europe in the Middle Ages -- is a bacterial infection spread by fleas from rodents. Pneumonic plague is caused by the same bacteria as bubonic plague but it attacks the lungs. It can be treated with antibiotics, but sometimes is still deadly. State health officials

Amazon has formally petitioned the FAA for permission to test its delivery drones near Seattle as part of its highly publicized push to airlift goods to people´s homes in 30 minutes or less. The controversial program called "Prime Air" is the brainchild of Chief Executive Officer Jeff Bezos and would use small, unmanned aircraft to zoom purchases to doorsteps. But the drive has generated bitter debate over safety and privacy issues. The retail giant is currently conducting indoor drone tests. It wants to conduct outdoor runs in the Seattle area, where its research and development labs are located. The company

WASHINGTON— Celebrations aside, LeBron James´ decision to return to the Cleveland Cavaliers of the NBA could complicate the Republican Party´s plan to nominate its presidential contender on Lake Erie´s shores in 2016. If James leads his team into post-season play then, the GOP could find its preferred June 28 start date for the convention impossible because of the site conflict. Convention planners typically take weeks to customize the space with lights, seats and the traditional balloon drop from the rafters — impossible tasks if the Cavaliers go into post-season play.
