´Blast the Hell´ Out of the British,

Writing on the Anglo-American relationship in the Mail on Sunday today, columnist Peter Hitchens reports on a little known conversation that sheds some light on the ´special relationship´ between the United States and the United Kingdom. He writes: Britain and the USA have come far closer to open armed combat with each other in modern times than most people realise. In many ways, this was the biggest war in modern history that never happened. Tired of being told about a ‘special relationship’ that didn’t seem to me to exist--and which nobody in Washington has ever heard of--I decided to look into what

Vox Populi is right. As a historian who has studied and written on Anglo-American relations over two centuries, I consider the over-arching claim in this article complete nonsense. An Anglo-American accord blossomed in the 1890s into co-belligerency in WW I (when the US was an "associated" rather than an "allied" power)and then a full-fledged alliance in WW II. That alliance persists today despite Zippy´s attempt to torpedo it.

The Brietbart headline is ridiculous, but the original article linked at the end is worth reading. Peter Hitchens is Chris Hitchens conservative brother. The Clinton reference at the end is very telling.

Typhoon Neoguri, the worst storm to hit Japan in 15 years, is likely to reach areas near the tsunami-crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant by Friday morning, forecasters have warned. The site’s operator said workers were bracing for the storm, which has been downgraded from a typhoon to a ´severe storm´. “We are tying up cables and hoses... and making sure cranes and booms don’t fall,” a company spokesman said. “We will also beef up patrols in areas where water could flow in.” The storm’s massive downpours present an extra headache for the plant where workers are locked in a daily

Militants in Iraq have seized nuclear materials used for scientific research at a university, the United Nations has been warned. Iraq warned of the seizure in a letter on Wednesday to the U.N. in which appealed for help to ´stave off the threat of their use by terrorists in Iraq or abroad.´ In the letter, which has been obtained by Reuters, Iraq´s U.N. ambassador Mohamed Ali Alhakim said nearly 40kg of uranium compounds were kept at Mosul University. The city of Mosul, Iraq´s second largest city, was captured last month in a seizure led by the Islamic State in Iraq

US President Barack Obama has sided with Republican Texas Governor Rick Perry on recommendations for improving security on the US-Mexico border. While visiting the state,Mr Obama said he had no "philosophical objection" to increasing the number of border patrol agents and repositioning them. But Mr Obama said the such action was held up by Congress´ delay in approving his request for extra funding. The White House asked for $3.7bn (£2.2bn) in extra funding on Tuesday. "Congress has the capacity to work with all parties concerned to directly address this situation," Mr Obama told reporters.

Imagine this: A siren blares, you are holding your child’s hand, you know in barely 15 seconds a Qassam rocket will land only yards away. [Snip] Without thinking, an Israeli mother or father will shield their child. In those 15 seconds--where the sound of the siren may well be the last thing you hear on this Earth--children are shielded by their parents. A human shield. A shield of love. Now try to comprehend this. In Gaza, children are crammed into targeted buildings. Sometimes forced to wait on rooftops, children are then ejected from these buildings, forced to ‘escort’ targeted militants--with

As I write this, my country Israel is under a barrage of rocket fire from Palestinian terrorists in Gaza. This is the shocking moment ISIS militants took sledgehammers to Iraqi tombs - smashing them to pieces. The rebels, who are members of the Islamic State terror group, were filmed attacking centuries-old graves in the north-west city of Mosul in Ninevah province. Donning balaclavas and black coats, they swung sledgehammers into the tombs, causing pieces of dust and stone to fly through the air. One of the devastated tombstones belonged to the Prophet Jonah (Younis in Arabic) and was revered by Muslims and Christians alike, according to Iraqi authorities. The White House on Tuesday formally requested $3.7 billion in emergency funding from Congress to deal with an influx of Central American minors along the southern border. But the proposal was quickly met with broad skepticism among Republican lawmakers, who were doubtful that the package would be approved quickly — if at all. Administration officials said the request is part of a comprehensive strategy aimed at building more detention centers, adding immigration judges, and beefing up border patrols and air surveillance. President Obama has said he hopes such steps will both speed deportations and discourage adults from sending children on

Sarah Palin on Tuesday joined a growing chorus of Republicans calling for the impeachment of President Obama, writing in a Breitbart op-ed that the influx of young illegal immigrants over the southern border "is the last straw that makes the battered wife say, ´no mas.´ " Mixed/careless metaphors aside, this is nothing but bad news for Republicans — especially four months until the 2014 election. Despite fiery statements issued by Hamas spokesmen over the past 48 hours, it was obvious Tuesday night that the Islamist movement was searching for ways to rid itself of the current escalation. Hamas feels that it has been forced into a confrontation with Israel – one that it did not want at this stage because of its increased isolation and financial crisis. The massive Israeli air strikes on the Gaza Strip over the past 24 hours have surprised Hamas and other Palestinian groups. Hamas apparently expected a limited response to the recent rocket attacks on Israeli cities and towns. But as the

Starting next week, House Republicans will launch a highly visible—and likely tumultuous—three-week process of bringing to the floor legislation to authorize their promised lawsuit against President Obama over his use of executive actions. "In theory, you could report out a resolution tomorrow and vote on it," said a House GOP aide on Tuesday. "But that is not the approach [the leaders] want to take." Rather, the aim is to display—if not actually engage in—a more deliberative process, even if amid controversy. This drawn-out script builds toward a potentially dramatic floor vote held just days, or even hours, before the House adjourns on

WASHINGTON — Congressional Democrats said Tuesday that they had developed legislation to override the Supreme Court decision on contraceptives. The bill would ensure that women have access to coverage for birth control even if they work for businesses that have religious objections. The bill, developed in consultation with the Obama administration, would require for-profit corporations like Hobby Lobby Stores to provide and pay for contraceptive coverage, along with other preventive services, under the Affordable Care Act. The measure could be on the Senate floor as early as next week, Senate Democrats said. “Your health care decisions are not your boss’s

Fate hasn´t been kind to Hillary Clinton, at least not in its most recent phase. In 2008, when the plate was set for the national Democrats, she lost the nomination to Barack Obama, of scant years and no gravitas, who soared out of nowhere to wrench destiny from her on the unspecified promise of "change." Now, "change" has come, and people don´t like it. Iraq changed from a safe, stable ally (just ask Obama) to a terrorist haven, one of the reasons why, though no fellow Democrats seem likely to edge her, her chances of winning the White House seem dim.
