Poor Katie — get her some Kleenex and a wrinkle-free pantsuit. TV star Katie Couric took such a beating in the press after she jumped ship to CBS she started comparing herself to Hillary Clinton, a new book says. The steep drop in popularity that followed Couric’s exit from NBC’s “Today” show in 2006 left her full of self-pity, according to author Sheila Weller. “In private, Katie — who had recently turned 50 — was now beginning to actively and repeatedly compare herself to the embattled but energized Hillary Clinton,” Weller writes in her new book — “The News Sorority: Diane Sawyer,

My father gave me what too many girls nowadays ruin themselves for lacking: A strong, loving, steady masculine presence. It’s inconceivable what I would be like without him. So, before I explain why my dad’s story is bigger than us, let me brag on him a little. It’s Father’s Day weekend, after all. Dad’s presence in my life kept me safe from many things my girlfriends put themselves through in frantic search of a man’s love. And my dad’s love was tangible, more acted out than spoken. He didn’t just say he loved us. His life repeatedly proved it. I never

ARLINGTON, Va. — Book signing in aisle 30. Among pallets of paper towels and bottled water, Hillary Clinton spent more than three hours Saturday morning autographing copies of her new memoir, “Hard Choices,” at a Costco in Northern Virginia. And, as it turns out, you really never know who will show up. “I don’t believe this,” Clinton said as she embraced Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor across the table. Justice Sotomayor said she happened to be “just shopping” at the bulk discount depot when she spied the former secretary of state sitting down. She told Clinton she plans to read her book. “You better, I

Mitt Romney for president in 2016?

Far from being excommunicated by Republicans after his loss to President Obama, 2012 Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney is enjoying a brand resurgence of late, drawing several potential 2016 candidates to his "ideas summit" this weekend in Utah and even earning some 2016 speculation himself. Meanwhile, some other potential candidates are in Iowa for the state Republican Party´s convention there Saturday. And not to be left out, Gov. Chris Christie, R-N.J., was in California Friday to raise money for the Republican gubernatorial candidate there and participate in a Facebook chat. It all adds up to a busy weekend for the early 2016

Joe Queenan´s Guide to Public Speaking

People routinely say that being asked to speak in public is their No. 1 fear, inspiring more dread than flying. The idea of speaking to a group of people, even if they know the audience, scares them…well…speechless. And when it does come time to mount the stage, inexperienced speakers only make things worse by resorting to corny jokes and sappy, improbable anecdotes. Their agony makes everyone else in the room feel uncomfortable. The room reeks of flop sweat. There is also the flip side to public speaking: having to listen to it. Few things in life are more unpleasant than being

At about 8 a.m. today, Anthony Weiner, former representative of New York´s Ninth Congressional District, unsuccessful mayoral candidate, and reformed sexy texter, had 27 Twitter favorites. They included some tweets about hockey (he´s a fan) and some compliments on his new-ish BusinessInsider.com column (he writes about politics and hockey). Oh, and at least six photos of this Orange County, California woman , who goes by ParisDylan550 on Instagram and ParisRoxanne0 on Twitter. We don´t know much about Paris, except that she´s lovely. She poses not infrequently in her underwear and has some 41,000 Instagram followers who are thrilled every time she does.

The pampered pukes and the Beautiful People still don’t get how angry everybody is about illegal immigration. Granted, Eric Cantor’s scalp isn’t even dry yet, but he is a pretty big trophy on the Tea Party wall. But the pajama boys of the mainstream media are still whistling past the graveyard, pretending the country doesn’t have a problem. Consider the death of a 3-year-old boy in Saugus Monday night in a traffic accident involving an illegal alien from Mexico who’d been deported and then came back. The Herald story had it all, including the fact that it was the SUV carrying the boy

Get the garlic. A full moon is rising on Friday the 13th -- the very same day a solar flare could send a shockwave to Earth’s surface. It’s a triple whammy for superstitious folks, according to Stuart Vyse, a psychology professor at Connecticut College. “People tend to try to read something into coincidences like these,” said Vyse, author of “Believing in Magic: The Psychology of Superstition.” “There will be a small group of people who are undoubtedly, predictably nervous about tomorrow.” The day also marks the first full moon on Friday the 13th since October 2000. WASHINGTON — Rep. Steve Cohen, Democrat of Tennessee — or someone high up on his staff — was trying to track down Hillary Clinton Thursday and apparently hoped someone, anyone, would share her phone number with his office. Cohen’s Director Of Operations, Craig Dulniak, a senior member of Cohen’s staff, blasted out an email to every scheduler on the Hill Thursday morning with a simple subject line. “Phone number for Hillary Clinton,” it read. The body was just as direct. “Does anyone have a good phone number for Hillary Clinton?” The email was forwarded outside Hill circles, too, but maybe

Detroit Could Speed Its Recovery

A recent report by the Detroit Blight Removal Task Force calculated there were likely 72,000 blighted structures and over 6,000 vacant lots within the city of Detroit. Their latest estimate of the cost of addressing this problem is $850 million for the residential structures and between $500 million and $1 billion for the industrial sites. That is a lot of money for Detroit, and if they can come up with the money it would take a long time to complete the task. A better solution would be a city homestead act. Eliana’s report is just stunning — no matter how many times similar “mishaps” have occurred in this administration. The IRS, like other government agencies, has lots of reasons to maintain emails, so I’m curious about whether they will be similarly informing courts, Congress, litigants, FOIA petitioners, and other people and bodies they must periodically make disclosures and reports to that they’ve lost nearly two years’ worth of agency communications? Or was this just one of those highly, highly unusual computer crashes that affects only the email account of Lois Lerner and any executive branch official with whom she happened to

BOSTON — Once fearing he would be viewed as "a loser for life" if he failed to win the presidency, Mitt Romney is trying to re-emerge as a force in Republican politics. Romney has quietly sought kingmaker status in the GOP´s fight for the Senate majority this fall and its quest to retake the White House in 2016. The effort at revival is fueling whispers about a third presidential run. But those closest to Romney suggest he´s more interested in shaping party politics by lending his name and record-breaking fundraising machine to what he considers the next generation of electable conservatives. Washington, DC – Today, Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp (R-MI) issued the following statement regarding the Internal Revenue Service informing the Committee that they have lost Lois Lerner emails from a period of January 2009 – April 2011. Due to a supposed computer crash, the agency only has Lerner emails to and from other IRS employees during this time frame. The IRS claims it cannot produce emails written only to or from Lerner and outside agencies or groups, such as the White House, Treasury, Department of Justice, FEC, or Democrat offices.

The Attorney General of the United States told a homosexual advocacy group on Tuesday night that the Boy Scouts of America "preserves and perpetuates the worst kind of stereotypes" by refusing to allow homosexuals to serve as Boy Scout troop leaders. "Today, courageous lesbian, gay, and bisexual individuals routinely put their lives on the line as members of America´s armed services," Holder told Lambda Legal Tuesday night. "And if these men and women are fit for military service, then surely they are fit to mentor, to teach, and to serve as role models for the leaders of future generations."

Chelsea Clinton earned an annual salary of $600,000 at NBC News before switching to a month-to-month contract earlier this year, sources with knowledge of the agreement told POLITICO. Clinton, who joined NBC News as a “special correspondent” in November 2011, was up for renewal or non-renewal this year. Instead, the sources said, the network decided to keep her on the payroll on a month-to-month basis so that the two parties could sever ties if Clinton’s mother, Hillary, runs for president.
