Today — Father’s Day — children of all ages will show their appreciation for their dads with gifts, cards or just spending time together. But for a growing number of men this Father’s Day, the best gift is one their kids can’t offer: a job. For that we can blame our chronically sluggish economy — and our bankrupt leadership in Washington. True, the nation churned out 217,000 new jobs in May. That means we’ve finally recovered all the jobs we’ve lost since the financial collapse, and the number countrywide is now at an all-time high. Even so, the picture is more complex. As

My Search for the Taliban Five

Here in Doha, Qatar, everybody knows the Taliban commanders released from Guantanamo are in town, but nobody knows where. I spent an afternoon hunting for their new luxury digs. The summers in Doha are so unbearably hot, few people venture out on the streets during daylight hours. As I set out from my hotel to scour Doha for the five Taliban commanders released from Guantanamo Bay, I knew that the odds of running into them were against me. I was in Doha this week with a group of diplomats, experts, and officials who gathered at the glitzy Ritz

Forget the endless scandals that seem to come at us every other day — the latest being the Benghazi terrorists using State Department cell phones (!), a crusade of Hispanic children pouring over our Southern border in the company of cartel drug lords and, of course, the suddenly “missing” IRS emails of Lois Lerner — the Obama administration has reached levels of hitherto unknown incompetence. It is a complete and utter debacle. Hardly anyone believes in the president anymore. Last night, on the O’Reilly Factor, even Geraldo deserted him. What next? James Carville? (Well, probably, to aid in Hillary’s coming separation from

The War on Christians

For at least three reasons, the contemporary persecution of Christians demands attention: It is occurring on a massive scale, it is underreported, and in many parts of the world it is rapidly growing. The Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life finds that Christians are suffering persecution in more places today than any other religious group; between 2006 and 2012, Pew says, they were targeted for harassment in 151 countries—three-quarters of the world’s states. Similar findings are reported by the Vatican, Newsweek, the Economist, and the 60-year-old Christian support group Open Doors. Most people in the West are unaware of

Will women vote for Hillary Clinton in 2016? In Hillary Clinton, will young women see an inspirational leader of indomitable fortitude, imposing intelligence and insurmountable courage? Or will they reject her as Mom, The One Who Just Doesn´t Get It? Will women closer to Clinton´s own age see her as one of our own: an indefatigable citizen who has cleared away false notions about women´s limited place in the world and pocketed her own pride - without forfeiting her dignity - in order to help America and the world become freer from injustice, violence, poverty and disease? Or will we succumb to that

The long-feared regional war between Shi’ites and Sunnis may be closer than ever. The Washington Post analyzes the rise of ISIS (sometimes called ISIL) in Syria and Iraq, which didn’t only grow organically in the vacuum left by the American withdrawal from Iraq. While the governments of Saudi Arabia and Kuwait oppose ISIS, their subjects have helped build it and may end up threatening to rewrite the political map of Southwest Asia:(Snip for video)As Sunni jihadists have pushed from Syria deep into Iraq, making startling gains that are now threatening Baghdad, they are highlighting the increasingly uncomfortable position of Persian

Border Patrol officials struggling to keep up with the increasing number of minors illegally crossing the Mexican border are not turning away persons with known gang affiliations. Chris Cabrera, vice president of the National Border Patrol Council Local 3307 in the Rio Grande Valley, explained that a Border Patrol agent he represents helped reunite a teenage gang member with his family in the United States. Cabrera notes the young member of Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13), a transnational criminal gang, had no criminal record in the U.S., but asks, “If he’s a confirmed gang member in his own country, why are we

His speech was billed as a farewell address, but when Texas Gov. Rick Perry took the stage before thousands of Texans at the state Republican convention last week, it sounded a whole lot more like someone rehearsing a presidential stump speech than a politician ready to kiss the spotlight goodbye. “The national Democrats think Texas is the next battleground. Well let’s be really clear: Texas will be their political burial ground,” he said, bringing the crowd to its feet. But everything’s big in Texas – including presidential ambitions – and Perry’s not the only man in the state eyeing a White

Chaos. That summarizes the situation on America’s southern frontier, as well as Obama’s freeing of almost 104,000 illegal-alien criminals last year. He clearly doesn’t give a damn about shielding Americans from the public-health and public-safety dangers posed by those who breach the border, including deadly felons now walking American streets. Waves of unaccompanied children are washing over the border with growing intensity. And many are bearing dangerous diseases. Illegals are heading into the general population, even after testing positive for tuberculosis. “The feds are putting them on public transportation to God knows where,” a law-enforcement official recently told columnist Michelle Malkin. “We are starting

The Wendy Davis ship has been sinking ever since her personal narrative was revealed to be, at best, inventive. The water level appears to have reached the deck, because her Campaign Manager has abandoned ship, as the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported Wednesday: State Sen. Wendy Davis’ campaign for governor abruptly switched gears Wednesday as it struggles to meet the high expectations that supporters have for the Fort Worth Democrat. As nationally known strategist Karin Johanson revealed that she is leaving the campaign, Davis announced that state Rep. Senior security officials have informed US Ambassador to Israel Dan Shapiro that one of three teenagers missing in the West Bank has American citizenship. The ambassador was notified after defense officials met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Tel Aviv on Friday to discuss the security situation in light of the possible abduction. The three youths, all aged between 17 and 19 and all yeshiva students, disappeared late Thursday night between Kfar Etzion and the settlement Alon Shvut, southwest of Jerusalem. The Shin Bet and the IDF´s Central Command are treating the teens´ disappearance as a terrorist kidnapping, given that, among

In 1983, when I was 16 years old, I lived in Germany—it was West Germany then—as an American foreign exchange student. It was a politically tense time. Germans turned a critical and often suspicious eye toward America while President Ronald Reagan negotiated nuclear-arms reduction with the Soviets. The United States had deployed medium-range nuclear missiles to Germany in the Cold War and many Germans wanted them removed. Reagan, however, wasn’t going to budge unless the Soviets agreed to reduce their armaments. It was a zero-zero arrangement, and the Soviets weren’t very cooperative. Many German youth took to the streets to

Eliana’s report is just stunning — no matter how many times similar “mishaps” have occurred in this administration. The IRS, like other government agencies, has lots of reasons to maintain emails, so I’m curious about whether they will be similarly informing courts, Congress, litigants, FOIA petitioners, and other people and bodies they must periodically make disclosures and reports to that they’ve lost nearly two years’ worth of agency communications? Or was this just one of those highly, highly unusual computer crashes that affects only the email account of Lois Lerner and any executive branch official with whom she happened to

BOSTON — Once fearing he would be viewed as "a loser for life" if he failed to win the presidency, Mitt Romney is trying to re-emerge as a force in Republican politics. Romney has quietly sought kingmaker status in the GOP´s fight for the Senate majority this fall and its quest to retake the White House in 2016. The effort at revival is fueling whispers about a third presidential run. But those closest to Romney suggest he´s more interested in shaping party politics by lending his name and record-breaking fundraising machine to what he considers the next generation of electable conservatives. Washington, DC – Today, Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp (R-MI) issued the following statement regarding the Internal Revenue Service informing the Committee that they have lost Lois Lerner emails from a period of January 2009 – April 2011. Due to a supposed computer crash, the agency only has Lerner emails to and from other IRS employees during this time frame. The IRS claims it cannot produce emails written only to or from Lerner and outside agencies or groups, such as the White House, Treasury, Department of Justice, FEC, or Democrat offices.

The Attorney General of the United States told a homosexual advocacy group on Tuesday night that the Boy Scouts of America "preserves and perpetuates the worst kind of stereotypes" by refusing to allow homosexuals to serve as Boy Scout troop leaders. "Today, courageous lesbian, gay, and bisexual individuals routinely put their lives on the line as members of America´s armed services," Holder told Lambda Legal Tuesday night. "And if these men and women are fit for military service, then surely they are fit to mentor, to teach, and to serve as role models for the leaders of future generations."

Chelsea Clinton earned an annual salary of $600,000 at NBC News before switching to a month-to-month contract earlier this year, sources with knowledge of the agreement told POLITICO. Clinton, who joined NBC News as a “special correspondent” in November 2011, was up for renewal or non-renewal this year. Instead, the sources said, the network decided to keep her on the payroll on a month-to-month basis so that the two parties could sever ties if Clinton’s mother, Hillary, runs for president. Kamyl Bazbaz, a spokesperson for the 34-year-old Clinton, referred POLITICO to NBC News, which declined to discuss Clinton’s contract. “We don’t comment

She also referred to Rove’s questions about her health. “They are trying constantly to, you know, raise false canards, you know, plant, you know, false information, and that´s what they do,” Clinton replied, accusing both Rove and Drudge for not wanting to debate the "real issues." “They want people to get
