Navy´s stealth destroyer designed

The Navy´s new super stealthy destroyer, the USS Zumwalt, has a lot in common with Hollywood´s starship Enterprise, according to folks who´ve seen it in person. Much has been written about the Zumwalt´s appropriately named commander, Capt. James Kirk. But aside from that coincidence, the ship´s operations center utilizes advanced technology that takes multitasking to a deadly new level on the high seas. First launched last year, this is a massive $3 billion warship -- the largest type of destroyer in the modern Navy by about 65%. One thing that sets it apart is a very small crew. Liberal groups angry with SC pols
over order to teach Constitution

The South Carolina legislature has rankled liberal groups after requiring that a pair of public schools use state funds to teach the U.S. Constitution and other founding documents -- on the heels of a budget fight over gay-themed books in the curriculum. State House lawmakers previously had cut funds from two public universities in retaliation for required-reading material containing homosexual themes. A revised budget passed by both the House and the Senate earlier this month, though, restored the money -- but dictated that exact amount be spent "for instruction in the provisions and principles of the United States Constitution, the Declaration

Supreme Court Has 17 Cases

WASHINGTON - It´s crunch time at the Supreme Court, where the justices are racing to issue opinions in 17 cases over the next two weeks. The religious rights of corporations, the speech rights of abortion protesters and the privacy rights of people under arrest are among the significant issues that are so far unresolved. Summer travel, European teaching gigs and relaxation beckon, but only after the court hands down decisions in all the cases it has heard since October. In rare instances, the justices will put off decisions and order a case to be argued again in the next term. This is also the

After sleeping outside in often arctic conditions for 365 nights in a row, Minnesota teenager Rudy Hummel is finally back in his own bed. But it’s not all snug and comfy. “The first night back was really, really strange,” Hummel, 17, told TODAY.com from his home in Hermantown, outside Duluth. “I felt like I was kind of smashing my moral compass after putting all that time and effort into making sure I slept outside, and here I was sleeping in my own bedroom again. And on waking up, my first thought was, ‘No, I broke my streak!’” But not his pledge. After snoozing

Images emerging from Mosul, Iraq´s embattled northern city, present a familiar scene to fans of zombie movies. Burned-out military vehicles are clustered together on empty streets. At every intersection there is evidence of desperate last stands. Strewn uniforms lay abandoned outside gutted police stations. Hundreds of thousands of civilians have fled for their lives. Mosul is a ghost town where only looters and stray dogs hazard the streets. But this isn´t a zombie movie. It is Iraq´s second-largest city, the thriving political and economic capital of the country´s Sunni Arab community. In a matter of days between June 6 and 9,

People are baffled today that Rep. Eric Cantor, the House majority leader, lost his job when he lost his GOP primary Tuesday night. A common refrain is, how could this have happened? (Sample headline: “Why Did Cantor Lose? Not Easy to Explain.”) The truth is that Cantor’s electoral demise did not occur overnight.(Snip)After Cantor’s 2010 victory, a group of anti-Cantor activists from both left and right met in person to discuss campaigning against the man who would soon be majority leader. We met several times over two weeks at coffee shops and pubs in strip malls throughout the Richmond suburbs.

Rand Paul, Marco Rubio

Marco Rubio and Rand Paul, two Republican senators who may run for president, are offering sharply different reactions to developments in Iraq, with Rubio backing potential American airstrikes against al-Qaeda-inspired militants advancing in the country and Paul expressing concerns about involvement. The divergent approaches illustrate the ongoing rift in the GOP over America’s role abroad, and could foretell a major point of contention among Republicans vying for the GOP’s nod in 2016. The views come as the White House weighs what it will do next in Iraq, where the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, a Sunni extremist group, has taken

Remember where you are at this moment. Twenty years after the fact, the real verdict on the O.J. Simpson murder trial is finally in. With a far more diverse population and polls showing blacks and whites reporting better race relations, the results are overwhelming: O.J. Simpson is guilty of murder. It wasn’t always this way. In 1995, 60 percent of black people said Simpson was innocent of charges that he killed his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ronald Goldman, on June 12, 1994. Black people were so angry with racist cops then, they didn´t want to see anyone put on trial except the

BAGHDAD -- Hundreds of young Iraqi men flocked to volunteer centers across Baghdad Saturday to join the fight against Islamic militants who have advanced across the country´s north this week. They were responding to a call by Iraq´s most revered Shiite cleric for Iraqis to defend their country against the Sunni Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, which seized Iraq´s second-largest city Mosul and Saddam Hussein´s hometown of Tikrit in a lightning advance. Fighters from the al-Qaida-inspired Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant made fresh gains on Friday, driving government forces at least temporarily from two towns in an ethnically

Islamic extremists are overrunning major cities in Iraq that U.S. forces liberated at the cost of American lives. Children from Central America are pouring illegally into America in numbers that far exceed our capacity to deal with them. Veterans are dying because they can’t get medical treatment. What do these developments have in common? No reasonable American can possibly think they are desirable. trivial, or unrelated to action (or inaction) by the Obama administration. This distinguishes them from, say, the Bergdahl deal. Although I have strongly criticized the deal, it is not beyond the bounds of reason to believe that the release

It could easily be mistaken for preparations for a presidential campaign event. The sign were hung just so. An advance team has scouted out the location. Local police officers have been requested. Officials were weighing the all-important decisions about where to put all the TV cameras and how to manage the lines of eager well-wishers. All the presidential-style activity is for the next stop on the Hillary Clinton book tour for “Hard Choices.” At the sprawling Costco in Arlington, Va., store employees are preparing for her arrival Saturday to sign 1,000 books in two hours.

The sprawling San Antonio Military Medical Center where freed prisoner of war Bowe Bergdahl will soon make his return to the United States is no stranger to healing the mental wounds of those who have gone through traumatic experiences abroad. Bergdahl, a U.S. Army sergeant held five years by the Taliban before being freed on May 31, has left a U.S. military hospital in Germany en route to San Antonio, where he will arrive on Friday for further treatment, a Pentagon spokesman said on Thursday. Eliana’s report is just stunning — no matter how many times similar “mishaps” have occurred in this administration. The IRS, like other government agencies, has lots of reasons to maintain emails, so I’m curious about whether they will be similarly informing courts, Congress, litigants, FOIA petitioners, and other people and bodies they must periodically make disclosures and reports to that they’ve lost nearly two years’ worth of agency communications? Or was this just one of those highly, highly unusual computer crashes that affects only the email account of Lois Lerner and any executive branch official with whom she happened to

BOSTON — Once fearing he would be viewed as "a loser for life" if he failed to win the presidency, Mitt Romney is trying to re-emerge as a force in Republican politics. Romney has quietly sought kingmaker status in the GOP´s fight for the Senate majority this fall and its quest to retake the White House in 2016. The effort at revival is fueling whispers about a third presidential run. But those closest to Romney suggest he´s more interested in shaping party politics by lending his name and record-breaking fundraising machine to what he considers the next generation of electable conservatives. Due to a supposed computer crash, the agency only has Lerner emails to and from other IRS employees during this time frame. The IRS claims it cannot produce emails written only to or from Lerner and outside agencies or groups, such as the White House, Treasury, Department of Justice, FEC, or Democrat offices.

Chelsea Clinton earned an annual salary of $600,000 at NBC News before switching to a month-to-month contract earlier this year, sources with knowledge of the agreement told POLITICO. Clinton, who joined NBC News as a “special correspondent” in November 2011, was up for renewal or non-renewal this year.
