Iraq crisis: SAS may be
sent in to help army

Telegraph [UK], by Richard Spencer, Peter Foster

Britain and America are weighing up military options in Iraq ranging from air strikes to the deployment of the SAS as jihadist fighters allied to remnants of the Saddam Hussein regime threatened to engulf Baghdad, the Iraqi capital. At the White House, President Barack Obama said he would “review options” over the weekend to counter the threat from the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham, an ultra-violent offshoot of al-Qaeda that has seized much of the north and west of Iraq--although he said there would be no “boots on the ground”. Meanwhile in London William Hague, the Foreign Secretary, said

While Hague and Cameron held a joint press conference, only Hague´s comments were reported. I guess Kerry didn´t have anything sensible to say, as usual.

Why nicotine gum and patches

Scientists discover the drug isn´t just

Nicotine patches have helped many smokers kick the habit, but new research suggests they may actually do more harm than good. A U.S. study found nicotine alone could cause cancer. The researchers, at the Virginia Bioinformatics Institute, say nicotine is such a powerful carcinogen that nicotine-infused products designed to help people give up smoking may not be safe. Nicotine is one of 4,000 chemicals found in cigarette smoke. While many of these chemicals are recognised as carcinogens nicotine has, until now, only been considered addictive rather than carcinogenic. It is heavily used in smoking cessation products such as patches and gum.

Britain and the US may abhor the rise of Islamic fundamentalism in Iraq but they have played a major part in encouraging it. And the upsurge of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant across northern Iraq is a pointer to what is likely to happen in Afghanistan once Nato pulls out its combat troops at the end of this year. [Snip] We destroyed the repressive regime of Saddam Hussein but opened the door for Islamic fundamentalists. Saddam was an evil man but he opposed fundamentalism and he kept it under control. In an army full of masked, black-clad figures, he is the one man who is never shy to show his face. But for those unlucky enough to cross him, the face of Shakir Wahiyib, a feared enforcer for the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham, is often the last they will ever see. The star of a series of grisly jihadist videos, including one in which three men are executed after failing his "Quranic quiz", Wahiyib is one of the few publicly-identified leaders of the shadowy jihadist group that has swept through northern Iraq. John Kerry took a break from a global summit on sexual violence in conflict on Friday to visit London´s hottest new venue, the Chiltern Firehouse. The Secretary of State, who arrived in the UK today for the conference led by Angelina Jolie to tackle rape in war zones, was spotted heading to the popular restaurant during a break in talks. Kerry is the latest in a string of politicians, royalty, and A-list stars who have graced the luxury venue where, according to reviewers, even God would have to wait for a table. For the most part, that means letting these unaccompanied children be reunited with their parents or other relatives already living in the United States. ´It’s upsetting that a lot of them are 16 or 17 years old and a lot of

The United States once had Islamic State of Iraq and al-Shams (ISIS) leader Abu Bakr al Baghdadi in custody at a detention facility in Iraq, but president Barack Obama let him go, it was revealed on Friday. Al Baghdadi was among the prisoners released in 2009 from the U.S.´s now-closed Camp Bucca near Umm Qasr in Iraq, The Telegraph reports. It is unclear why the U.S. let the merciless al Qaeda leader slip away, however, one theory is that al Baghadadi was granted amnesty along with thousands of other detainees because the U.S. was preparing to pull out of Iraq.

Eliana’s report is just stunning — no matter how many times similar “mishaps” have occurred in this administration. The IRS, like other government agencies, has lots of reasons to maintain emails, so I’m curious about whether they will be similarly informing courts, Congress, litigants, FOIA petitioners, and other people and bodies they must periodically make disclosures and reports to that they’ve lost nearly two years’ worth of agency communications? Or was this just one of those highly, highly unusual computer crashes that affects only the email account of Lois Lerner and any executive branch official with whom she happened to

BOSTON — Once fearing he would be viewed as "a loser for life" if he failed to win the presidency, Mitt Romney is trying to re-emerge as a force in Republican politics. Romney has quietly sought kingmaker status in the GOP´s fight for the Senate majority this fall and its quest to retake the White House in 2016. The effort at revival is fueling whispers about a third presidential run. But those closest to Romney suggest he´s more interested in shaping party politics by lending his name and record-breaking fundraising machine to what he considers the next generation of electable conservatives.
