As goes Mosul....

One of the problems with the armies of liberal democracies is that above a certain rank — sergeant, by some cynical estimates, though I myself would not presume to say — military leadership becomes proportionally less responsible as one climbs the chain of command: The generals are quasi-politicians who answer to civilian leaders, who themselves answer to actual politicians, who answer to the least informed and most irresponsible members of the chain of command, that being the voters. The incentive structure across that chain of command is perverse: At the bottom are the gentlemen coming out of places such as Camp

A really fine piece. Glad it´s on the MUST READS.

Visitors who are coming from jihadist hot spots, or who have some connection with them, should be subject to an extraordinary degree of scrutiny and supervision.

I don´t agree. Instead, they should be refused entry to the USA. Better safe than sorry, and hurting their feelings honestly doesn´t matter.

Student visas, in particular, should be severely restricted:

Agreed, but students should be as carefully scrutinized as non-students.

Access to an American university education is a coveted commodity, and denying it is our version of an oil embargo.

Today´s American universities are breeding grounds for discontent about America. Why exacerbate a would-be jihadist´s inclinations by fostering more anti-Americanism?

Beyond that, immigration from the Middle East to the United States should be radically curtailed.

Sorry, no. It should be stopped for the conceivable future. Today is not the time to go all wobbly. It is too dangerous.

That such actions would unfairly burden some citizens of those countries should be considered at most secondary to the fact that they would protect citizens of this country.

I don´t care about their "unfair burden". I care about keeping Middle Easterners out of the USA for now.

Terrorism requires terrorists to be in proximity to targets. If the Middle East is indeed to be an exporter of terrorism and violence, we need not be an importer of it.

Yes. So then why give any visas at all right now? We don´t need them. If they´re discontented with living in their homelands, let them rise up and revolt.

Sorry, but where I used to be quite generous about immigration, our POTUS and State and intel have made it all too dangerous for them to be allowed in. At all.

For rhetorical purposes it is acceptable to put the Middle East in either or terms. But the reality is that there is no multiple choice. The Arab Middle what been, is and will be exactly what Islam has been for 1400 years throughout the world. Violent, backward cruel, extremely intolerant, blood thirsty. There are examples in Europe and India where non-Muslims halted Islam in its track and turned it back. Anyone committing troops against Islam should study that history carefully.

"Mega-dittos" Mr. Williamson and posters #1, #2, and #3!! Time to raise the drawbridge. Quarantine them and cut them off from our technology and financing (whatever is left of the latter). With fracking, we don´t need their oil anymore. They can go pound their sand.

Re-locating UN Headquarters to Brussels would also be a protective step in the right direction.

I agree w/ #1 - stop letting them in, and I would go even farther, deport all of them that are here illegally.

I visit my local suburban Cleve. mall around once a week, and am apalled at how many women in headscarves, and even full burkas are roaming around! Many with several youngsters in strollers. I am very uncomfortable with it, and don´t want them or their beliefs here. I don´t think the 1st Amendment meant that we had to tolerate their beliefs in total domination of our political, religious, business, and personal lives.

I´m sorry, but this is not a problem or a movement that can be "quarantined." And the reason is that the problem isn´t "terrorists" or "jihadists," it´s Islam. The fact is that it is a brutal, repressive political system committed to worldwide conquest masquerading as a religion. To pretend otherwise will lead either to a much larger and more deadly (to us) confrontation or to their complete annihilation and outlawing of its practice.

Take your pick.

As for "winning wars," I´m fed up with the absurd analyses and falsely demeaning assessments that we can´t win wars. The issue isn´t that we can´t, it´s that our foolish leaders won´t allow our military to finish the job. If you are facing an existential threat, you don´t quit until: you completely destroy the enemy´s capacity to wage war; you kill or incarcerate all of their identifiable leaders; you kill enough of their followers, including civilians, that the remaining ones lose any inclination to continue to fight.

If we don´t fight to win using this model, we will someday be destroyed and enslaved by someone who does.

Locking the doors and barring the windows isn´t going to stop them. They´re not sending armies, they´re sending terrorists who are increasingly more sophisticated with ever more powerful weapons. We won´t be able to stop them without turning our free country into a locked down police state which is the purpose of terrorism and just another way to lose to them. We´re going to have to face them sometime, why not now while we´re strong than at some unknown time in the future when we might be very weak?

The irony is sublime.
Every soldier sailor Air Force and marine over there, risking life and limb to be bombed or shot by some pre historic amoral un-named animal, LEAVE THERE,
and come back here to guard our own border, in much greater safety, with added comfort of visiting family, and enjoying delicious Mexican food. Establishing shoot to kill any border crosser is the ultimate legislation. Cutting off endless government and Church sanctuary charity leaves us with only the most productive survivors already. Mexicans are a fabulous hard working, innovative, small business culture. There are many loving decades of our two cultures.

But it is all turning sour as the Church and politicians turn it into a massive invasion. It has to stop. We´ve done enough serious damage already to Mexico, raising our own criminal underworld drug prices so high as to cause total breakdown of justice as violent Mexican cartels smuggle drugs into our own American cartels.

Stop the lawlessness. Tell the Pope to call off all the Bidens and the Rubio traitors.

Yes. I agree. Well written piece- as far as it goes. But, the truth of the matter that Bush (both of them!), Clinton and naturally the idiot Øbama, miss is the fact that the entire middle east is infected with Ilam. Vast other parts of the world are infected with Islam. This is like the plague of the 12th century come alive to modern times and is killing us and we are doing nothing about even though we can cure it. We go in among these cretins and put Armani suits and Sub Shops in their population and expect they will be cured of this dreadful thing called Islam? Islam is not compatible with modern human civilization! It should have died out five centuries ago. It did not! And we have let it fester and boil to this unmanageable, disastrous state we now face! Well, it is either going to be managed or we can all go out and buy a prayer rug. Because there is no other option! None!

Remember about a month ago, the Syrian rebels agreed to a cease fire and were given safe passage from the city of Homs? Anyone care to guess where those rebels went?

These guys just want to kill people, and don´t really care who they are. This is the face of Islam today.

Obama´s foreign policy is the perfect example how not to do things. The USA needs to acknowledge we are at war with Islam. The main thrust of our Islamic foreign policy should be killing terrorists. We should not be sitting on the sidelines expecting others to fight our war. We should not be doing any nation building while Islamic terrorism remains a threat.
