ISIS: The first terror group
to build an Islamic state?

CNN, by Tim Lister

The face of a balding, middle-aged man stares unsmilingly into the camera. He is dressed in a suit and tie and could pass for a midlevel bureaucrat. But the photograph is that of Abu Bakr al Baghdadi, who has transformed a few terror cells harried to the verge of extinction into the most dangerous militant group in the world. The Islamic State in Iraq and Syria has thrived and mutated in the security vacuum that followed the departure of the last U.S. forces from Iraq and the civil war in Syria. The aim of ISIS is to create an Islamic state across Sunni

Today, the House Oversight Committee subpoenaed IRS Commissioner John Koskinen to testify at a hearing Monday about Lois Lerner’s “lost” emails. On Friday, the IRS disclosed to Congress that it had lost many Lois Lerner emails dated from January 2009 to April 2011 due to a previously undisclosed computer crash in 2011. In a letter to Koskinen today, Chairman of the Oversight Committee Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) said that the Federal Records Act (FRA) was passed by Congress to avoid this very scenario. “The FRA requires agencies to make and preserve records of agency decisions, policies, and essential transactions, and to

What is happening in Iraq now is essentially the Shia-Sunni war that has gone out of hand. From Saddam Hussein’s death in 2006 and since America’s establishment of a weak government in Baghdad, the sectarian differences between Shia’s and Sunni’s have come to the front. A Shia Iran’s influence over Iraq has got many of the countries in the region, especially Saudi Arabia, with a Sunni majority, uncomfortable. Many, especially Riyadh, see Iraq PM Nouri al-Maliki as a Tehran man. The rise of the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS), a breakaway al Qaeda faction that has set its goal at

PESHAWAR, Pakistan — The Pakistani military on Sunday announced that it had launched a “comprehensive operation” against foreign and local militants hiding in the tribal region near the border with Afghanistan. In a prelude to the announced offensive, Pakistani fighter jets pounded suspected militant hide-outs in Pakistan’s tribal belt early Sunday, killing at least 50 fighters, many of them foreigners. Military officials called those attacks a reprisal for the militants’ assault on the Karachi airport one week ago. In the days after the Karachi assault, military officials had hinted that plans were underway for a major operation in the northwestern tribal belt,

RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. – It´s perhaps appropriate that President Barack Obama is vacationing this weekend in California, where the state flag features a roaming grizzly. The restless president, who has compared himself to a caged animal on recent wanderings by declaring the "bear is loose," took a long Father´s Day weekend away with his wife and older daughter. The visit to the desert resort area of Palm Springs is one of the ways Obama has been trying to escape during his sixth year cloistered in the White House. "I think frankly we've all been through a cold and bitter winter and the bear has cabin fever,"

During President Barack Obama´s visit to the Coachella Valley in February, when he met with Jordanian King Abdullah II at the Annenberg Retreat at Sunnylands, the White House said Obama made a stop at interior designer Michael S. Smith´s residence in Rancho Mirage. Smith, a close friend of first lady Michelle Obama, is known for his work at the White House and locally for his designs at the Sunnylands visitor center. Little was said at the time about Smith´s partner, James Costos. Costos, too, has ties to the president. He is U.S. ambassador to Spain and Andorra, appointed about six months

BAGHDAD — Iraq edged closer to the prospect of full-blown civil war Friday as a top Shiite Muslim cleric issued a call to arms against Muslim extremists who are continuing their military campaign to supplant the government. In his sermon in Karbala, Sheikh Abdul Mahdi al-Karbalai urged citizens to resist the forces of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), an al-Qaeda splinter group that overran Mosul, the country´s second-largest city, as well as other towns in the past week after encountering little resistance from Iraqi troops. "Citizens who are able to bear arms and fight terrorists, defend their country

Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl arrived back on American soil on Friday but his parents were not on hand to meet him — and he will decide when that happens, officials said. "It is a returnee´s choice," Col. Bradley Poppen said during a briefing at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio. "The family understands that process at this point in time." The parents, who appeared at a White House announcement of his release two weeks ago, said in a statement that they are "overjoyed" he is back in the United States but pleaded for privacy.

Hailey, ID-The father of embattled POW Bowe Bergdahl, who landed on US soil today, waged a sinister campaign of stalking and harassment against pretty twin sisters – even stealing a gnome from their garden and peaking at them in the shower, the sisters claim in shocking police reports. Bearded Robert ´Bob´ Bergdahl drove by the home of Lacey and Allie Hillman ‘several times a day’ over a period of months and left ´creepy´ notes for them, the sisters allege in police documents, obtained exclusively by MailOnline. Once Bergdahl banged on Allie’s door and accused her of ´two-timing´ him – despite

Adam Smith asked DoD General Counsel Stephen Preston for a specific example from the past where the United States “dealt with non-state actors who are holding a service member in order to achieve their recovery.” Preston cited the release of Michael Durant, the Army helicopter pilot of Blackhawk Down fame, who was held prisoner for eleven days by Somali warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid? after his helicopter was shot down in

A closer look at economics professor Dave Brat´s stunning Republican primary upset of House Majority Leader Eric Cantor shows the race was about much more than immigration. It´s true that Mr. Brat attacked Mr. Cantor for pursuing bipartisan immigration reform. But a survey from the left-leaning Public Policy Polling finds that roughly 70% of Republicans in Virginia´s 7th Congressional district favor such reform. So how did Mr. Brat, a relative unknown who raised around $200,000, defeat the Washington power broker who raised more than $5 million? The Brat insurgency was based on a broad critique of the nexus between big business

"Sales were well below expectations and the media was a disaster." According to this source, a Simon & Schuster insider, "They sold 60,000 hard covers first week and 24,000 ebooks." The publishing house was "hoping and praying for 150,000 print first week."

At any other time, the growing crisis on the Mexican border, with tens of thousands of unaccompanied young people crossing illegally into the United States, might dominate the news. Yet the situation has received less attention than it might amid the furor over House Majority Leader Eric Cantor´s primary defeat, the collapse of Iraq, the continuing Bergdahl matter, and Hillary Clinton´s book tour. Wikipedia has an article describing the six times Republican politicians suggested impeaching Barack Obama, the most serious of which was a hearing by the House Judiciary Committee “formally titled ‘The President’s Constitutional Duty to Faithfully Execute the Laws,’ that has been viewed as an attempt to begin justifying impeachment proceedings”. (Snip) The problem with the “Obama is unimpeachable” argument is that he has already been impeached as Leader of the Free World. Any observer of Obama’s collapse will have noted his marginalization in international councils. Britain flatly refused to go along with him in enforcing a Red Line in Syria.

Bill Clinton is by far the most admired president of the past quarter century, a new poll shows, underscoring how much he has done to burnish his profile since leaving the White House in 2000. Asked which president of the past 25 years they admired most, some 42% of respondents named Mr. Clinton in the new Wall Street Journal/NBC News/Annenberg Survey. That was more than twice the share that named any other president. The other three presidents of the quarter century all polled about the same: 18% said they most admired President Barack Obama; 17% named George W. Bush; and 16%

President Obama announced Monday night, in a letter to Congress, that 275 U.S. troops will deploy to Iraq to provide security for American personnel in the country currently in chaos. In the letter, the president called for Congressional authorization for this action. And this was the statement released by the Press Secretary’s office. Today, consistent with the War Powers Resolution, the President transmitted a report notifying the Congress that up to approximately 275 U.S. military personnel are deploying to Iraq to provide support and security for U.S. personnel and the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad. Hardly anyone accepts the IRS’ claim to have lost two years of Lois Lerner’s emails. Those most familiar with government record retention requirements, and the technology used, probably are the most skeptical. The supposedly lost emails cover January 2009 to April 2011, the period when Lerner is suspected of targeting conservative groups with heightened and invasive scrutiny. Those emails also pertain to communications Lerner may have had with agencies other than the Internal Revenue Service. That’s key, because many suspect that the Obama White House knew about, and may have coordinated, the targeting.

Highly organized and bloodthirsty, the radical Islamist army called ISIS took but a few days to subjugate the cities of northern Iraq as it dreams of taking over the entire country — while President Obama played it cynically cool. The group’s stunning, barbaric march prompted the President on Friday to offer to review a range of options because America has “a stake in making sure that these jihadists are not getting a permanent foothold in either Iraq or Syria.” Returned now to the White House from a long-weekend family vacation in California, the President must face the awful reality that he dodged
