Was it ‘crazy’ for this scientist

that killed 50 million people?

Washington Post, by Terrence McCoy

A famous picture from the 1918 flu pandemic shows so many rows of bedridden soldiers that it looks like an optical illusion — the double-mirror effect. It’s a jarring image to accompany jarring events that began in January 1918 and quickly subsumed the planet. Little about the Spanish flu, which would ultimately infect one-third of all souls on Earth and kill a staggering 50 million, makes sense. Most influenza outbreaks pick off the weakest among us: the young, elderly, and infirm. But this one, called the “greatest medical holocaust in history,” targeted and killed healthy adults. Even today, “its origin remains

#1, the 20% chance number is an extrapolation of an assumption requiring 10 more labs to start doing this and assuming there is no attenuation of the new bug. It´s a hyped up number meant to elicit an expected response.

If the scenario were actually correct we would be having ebola outbreaks in universiy towns all around the world since considerably more than ten labs are working with that particularly nasty. Same holds true for the real bird flu, hanta virus and a slew of other equally deadly strains.

Don´t buy the hype but concentrate on the underlying (supposedly main) issue. Just because we can recreate a facsimile of the Spanish flu should we? Would any information we recover be worth the possibility of another outbreak? An equally interesting question would also be if that epidemic happened today would it be anywhere near as deadly? We still have several cases of Bubonic plague in this country every year yet no mass outbreak has occurred, or is likely to given our sanitation and better understanding of the disease process.

Personally, I think the guys nuts but the Community should worry more about the Ebola he has in that lab than any franken critter he might be dreaming up.

Obama AWOL as border crisis worsens

John McCain, an immigration hawk. Who knew? Mr. McCain, the highest-profile Republican of the U.S. Senate’s “Gang of Eight” that came up with amnesty as the solution to the immigration crisis — and it truly is a crisis — is finally taking a hard line against President Obama for his encouraging the tidal wave of illegal aliens swamping the southwestern border. “There has to be a halt to this,” Mr. McCain thundered Sunday on CNN. “That’s what we want, and the best way to do that is for planeloads of these young people to be returning to their country of origin

It starts badly enough: Contrary to what those who defend the right to own high-powered assault rifles believe, not all guns are created equal. Due to a combination of availability, portability and criminal usage the following five types of guns are the country’s most dangerous. And then gets worse. The link takes you to the instantly infamous piece in Rolling Stone by some poor lassie named Kristen Gwynne entitled, “The Five Most Dangerous Guns in America.” Now, most normal people reading that might

Millennials´ Political Views
Don´t Make Any Sense
Atlantic, by Derek Thompson    Original Article

Millennial politics is simple, really. Young people support big government, unless it costs any more money. They´re for smaller government, unless budget cuts scratch a program they´ve heard of. They´d like Washington to fix everything, just so long as it doesn´t run anything. That´s all from a new Reason Foundation poll surveying 2,000 young adults between the ages of 18 and 29. Millennials´ political views are, at best, in a stage of constant metamorphosis and, at worst, "totally incoherent," as Dylan Matthews puts it. It´s not just the Reason Foundation. In March, Pew came out with a similar survey of Millennial attitudes

One August morning nearly two decades ago, my mother woke me and put me in a cab. She handed me a jacket. “Baka malamig doon” were among the few words she said. (“It might be cold there.”) When I arrived at the Philippines’ Ninoy Aquino International Airport with her, my aunt and a family friend, I was introduced to a man I’d never seen. They told me he was my uncle. He held my hand as I boarded an airplane for the first time. It was 1993, and I was 12. My mother wanted to give me a better life,

The idea of pulling nearly all American troops out of Afghanistan in 2016 suddenly seems pretty lousy, after so much of Iraq has collapsed under a similar scenario. When President Obama announced his plan to leave Afghanistan by the end of 2016, U.S. intelligence said it could be done safely. Now, intelligence and military leaders are privately warning that the U.S. counterterrorism forces could be needed there for much longer. During the internal administration debate earlier this year over the way forward in Afghanistan, the CIA supported a plan to degrade al Qaeda to the point that America could withdraw

AUSTIN — A Southern heritage group defeated Texas on Monday, celebrating a court decision expected to force Texas to issue license plates adorned with the Confederate battle flag. A federal appeals panel ruled 2-1 that the Department of Motor Vehicles had violated the Sons of Confederate Veterans’ free speech rights and engaged in “viewpoint discrimination” when it rejected its specialty plate in 2011. The judgment rekindled a loud debate among those who say the symbol honors Confederate heritage and others who see it as racially offensive and hurtful. An attorney for the Texas chapter, John McConnell, said the ruling reaffirms

How does one explain the plummeting poll numbers for Barack Obama? Most people would point to the disarray and consequences of ObamaCare, the IRS scandal, the border crisis, the collapse of Iraq, the VA scandal, the impotent reaction to Russia’s seizure of Crimea, chronic long-term unemployment, and a host of nonsensical distractions staged by the White House to distract from all of the above and more. Last month, polls showed a majority of Americans thought Obama lacked the necessary leadership for his job, and rated his competence below that of George W. Bush at a similar point in their presidencies.

This may come as a shock, but only 55 million years ago, our planet had no polar ice caps; in fact, it nearly became a steamy, runaway greenhouse world, with CO2 levels exceeding 2,500 ppm. Then, all of a sudden, something intervened, causing a shift. Atmospheric carbon dioxide began to drop, steadily generating today´s world, with ice caps at both poles. But why did this happen? And better yet, could whatever triggered this drastic switch be used to temper today´s climate? Good questions. But the answers lay buried deep in the Arctic, hidden to researchers. Sen. John Cornyn (R) and Rep. Facing a torrent of state laws restricting access to safe and legal abortions, supporters of a woman’s right to make her own childbearing decisions have been forced to play a defensive game — trying to block enactment of the laws, and, when that doesn’t work, challenging them in court. An important hearing of the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday could begin to move the dynamics of the fight in a positive direction. The subject of the hearing is the Women’s Health Protection Act, a vital measure that would safeguard the reproductive rights of women all across the nation, regardless of where

A restless President Barack Obama has ventured out on an array of field trips, stopping at local hotspots when he travels and ambling around Washington, D.C. He’s dined on burgers, pizza, barbecue, ice cream and a Chipotle burrito bowl on recent outings. And last week, he shot pool and drank beer during a stop in Denver. White House officials say the forays into Americans’ everyday lives help re-energize the president and connect him with average folks. But with Mr. Obama’s legislative proposals stalled and his approval ratings sagging, the excursions also are aimed at reanimating the president’s agenda and providing

A Fox News exclusive reported this morning by Jana Winter inexplicably buried the lede. Winter reports that several dead children have been discovered “washed up along the riverbank” of the Rio Grande, but fails to note that there have been no reports by the Obama administration on this. This indicates a pattern of covering up dead illegal alien kids by the Obama administration. It was two weeks before news was reported on the sole child death acknowledged by the Obama administration, Gilberto Ramos, a 15 year-old boy from Guatemala whose body was found in the Texas brush dead from the

The First Lady of these United States has declared war on Chick-fil-A. It seems the home of plump juicy breasts and hot buttered buns has run afoul of the new Smart Snacks in School program. The program is a component of Mrs. Obama’s Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. The new government regulations require snack items served in public schools to have less than two hundred calories. That includes vending machines, lunch rooms and other campus food venues. And that’s really bad news for kids at South Carolina’s Socastee High School. They’ve just learned they will no longer be allowed to buy Chick-fil-A

“Trust” is for Con Men: The reaction to the border chaos in Texas has accomplished one thing: It has exploded the lie at the heart of current “comprehensive” immigration reform plans. The basic structure of those plans is a swap of a) near-immediate legalization for b) increased border security in the future. The appealing idea is to let current illegals stay while taking the steps necessary to prevent further waves. The lie is the assumption that, once current illegals get their legalization, pro-immigrant activists in both parties will continue to support the second half of the bargain, the increased security.
