Iraq veteran: This is not what

For a veteran of the fighting there—and proponent of the counterinsurgency strategy that provided a chance for the country to stabilize—watching the recent unraveling of Iraq has been disheartening but not surprising. My unit arrived in Anbar province in September of 2003, as the Sunni population there began to support in earnest an insurgency against the American occupation of the country. Young soldiers were killed by snipers and roadside bombs as their officers struggled to understand the political climate in which the fighting was taking place. We left after a hard year that cost the lives of 22 fine young

Yes it was from the very start.

Thank you Bush for 5,000 Americans and over 1000,000 deaths of Iraq citizens in a stupid war based on false predictions.

Bush was a fool on many fronts. Nice guy I guess but that is all I can say for him.

He was the last time I voted based on the lessor of two evils basis.

I was not for start of the war from the start
Did not fall for the Rice and Bush crap.

Once it started thou I was in full support of it. I did not support the stupid nation building crap he wanted.

Now all you Bush lovers can jump on me but what have I said that is false.

Iraq was stable and would have been an excellent strategic post in the precarious Middle East. Our withdrawal betrayed our soldiers and the Iraqi people.

Reply 4 Very true. But since when was it American policy to start a war for that purpose in our history.

Kinda goes opposite of what the founders envisioned. Vietnam was also a bunch of crap.

I spent two years, six months in that hell hole.

We also betrayed the Vietnam gov/people in the end. That is also now the American way, with the socialist government we have.

Carter was never the worse POUS it was always Johnson now Obama. Bush well I will leave it alone.

Ponder for a minute what AFSCME has done. The union has severed ties with the United Negro College Fund because the Koch brothers contributed $25 million to the fund. Or rather, because the fund accepted the contribution. The money will pay for 3,000 scholarships and other needs. To read about this episode, go here. The hatred whipped up against the Koch brothers has become nearly frightening, I think. It is undemocratic, unsettling, intolerant. I’ve never liked it when left-leaning types say, “So-and-so scares me,” or, “This scares me.” There was a bumper sticker in the 2000s that said Bush Scares

Maybe it is time for a shake-up. President Obama’s second-term staffing was always going to be a risk. He abandoned his first term’s team of rivals for a closer-knit team of loyalists. The bet was that he was assured enough in the job to no longer need the in-house challenge — and that smooth-running consensus would compensate for the loss. The bet isn’t paying off. Overseas and at home, the administration seems besieged and befuddled. Obama is in danger of cementing an image of haplessness that would be hard to undo. The administration was surprised when Russian President Vladimir Putin

The dog days of summer are upon us, and with them, an extended slowdown in politics — as Americans spend their time working on their tans rather than studying up on the latest fights in the nation’s capital. Things won’t pick up in earnest again until after Labor Day, when the political campaigning reemerges in full force. As we head into this break, it’s worth pausing to review and figure out exactly what we’ve learned about the American political landscape — as it relates to the 2014 midterm and 2016 presidential elections, the hopes (or lack thereof) for legislative accomplishments,

Thousands of Gazans flee homes

GAZA CITY — Tens of thousands of panicked residents fled their homes in the northern Gaza Strip on Sunday after the Israeli military dropped leaflets from the sky warning those who stayed behind that they were risking their lives because a large, intense operation was imminent. Residents in Gaza were whipsawed by growing anxiety and frustration. More than 17,000 people poured into makeshift shelters as Israeli commandos entered the coastal enclave early Sunday to knock out a Hamas rocket-launch site. A brief gun battle with Hamas militants ensued and left four Israeli soldiers lightly wounded. The brief incursion by commandos

Municipal bond mutual fund investors are panicking this weekend after the U.S. Commonwealth of Puerto Rico’s Legislature passed a new law allowing public agencies to default on their debt. Although part of the United States, Puerto Rico in the 1990s made Spanish the official language and now about 86% of the island does not speak English in the home. Democrat Governor Alejandro Garcia Padilla, who has difficulty speaking English, told Bloomberg News last year that Puerto Rico had a constitutional and moral obligation to not default on the island’s $73 billion of debt. But he just passed a law giving

Well, this explains a lot. A Justin Lynch column ("Wartime Press") originally posted at the Weekly Wonk and republished at Time.com with a more foreboding title ("Bloggers, Surveillance and Obama’s Orwellian State") really ends up being an attempted justification by those Lynch quoted for having a close alliance between the government and "journalists" with "professional standards." Thom Shanker, the Pentagon correspondent for the New York Times, gets the award for the most Orwellian quote in the litter, which will come after the jump. Its prelude is his belief that "The government really needs to get its message out to the

Border crisis scrambling the

Until now, the politics of immigration have been seen as a no-lose proposition for President Obama and the Democrats. If they could get a comprehensive overhaul passed, they would win. And if Republicans blocked it, the GOP would further alienate crucial Hispanic and moderate voters. But with the current crisis on the Southwest border, where authorities have apprehended tens of thousands of unaccompanied Central American children since October, that calculus may be shifting. Republicans and even some Democrats have accused Obama of being insufficiently engaged in a calamity that many say he should have seen coming.

Finally, the opposition arose: Still, critics say, if the test is at all inaccurate, some good people might be thrown out or defective ones chosen. I’m sorry, the actual sentence said “good embryos might be thrown out.” I don’t know how I made that mistake. In any case, embryos get “thrown out” whether the test is administered or not.

Sarah Palin wants to impeach Barack Obama. In an op-ed article published last week, the former Republican vice presidential nominee declared that the crisis on the southern border (where young illegal immigrants are being detained) "is the last straw that makes the battered wife say, ´No, mas´." The Republican Speaker of the House, John Boehner, thinks that´s loco. (Technically, he said, "I disagree".) For Republicans hoping to avoid the kind of drama that might derail what looks to be a very good midterm election year, this kind of call is both a nuisance and a trend. A growing number of our fellow Americans have taken on grotesque features, in looks and sounds, in reaction to the thousands of children from Central America who have crossed our borders as they flee poverty and violence in hope for something better.
