After Cantor
PowerLine, by Steven Hayward

Original Article

Posted By:KarenJ1, 6/11/2014 2:13:01 PM

Some additional observations going forward on the Cantor debacle: I never found Cantor to be a very compelling political personality. I thought his speeches were too superficial and cliché (even if they were the right clichés), and his delivery flat. It left me with the impression that the ratio of personal ambition to substance was out of whack. But there’s more to being House majority leader than being a scintillating public speaker. We should not denigrate the “back room” aspects of legislative politics just because it involves messy compromises and trimming. No one typically gets good marks for this from

Comments:
Hayward provides good analysis and goes in depth into the question of impeachment if the Republicans take the Senate and if Obama unilaterally grants amnesty to all illegals. It sure isn´t too uplifting and made the high I felt from last night´s win crash to the ground. It´s still something we should pay attention to.

Hayward makes some good points, sobering ones. It is true that back room dealing, arm twisting are necessary and important skills for a House Majority Leader. The problem is, to what end is the man using those skills? Also, with the national media being as one-sided as it is, a man in such a role with poor public speaking skills has no business in the job. Just my take.

I strongly agree with #2´s MR recommendation, if only for this terrifying quote:

"... after the election next fall, especially if the GOP takes the Senate and with an eye to the 2016 election prospects for Democrats, Obama might well decide to use his pardon power to grant a blanket pardon to all illegal aliens presently in the United States."

He has the Constitutional power to do this.

A blanket pardon is not a grant of citizenship.

This could blow up in Obama´s face, as it may arouse public opinion in opposition.

I very much enjoy Steven Hayward´s columns, but #4 is correct. An Obama "blanket pardon" would be meaningless rhetoric and thus useless to those who want to become citizens. But, it would make Obama sycophants feel all gooey and self-righteous.

Dick Cheney threw his support behind a candidate in Nevada. Rudy Giuliani and Donald Trump hosted a fundraiser for one in Florida. As President Obama finds himself accused by Republicans of executive overreach, prominent conservatives are emphasizing the importance of getting Republicans elected to attorney general in states across the country. “President Obama has proven he’s willing to violate all laws and the Constitution to enact his radical agenda,” Jessica Medeiros Garrison, the executive director of the group the Republican Attorneys General Association, told The Daily Caller. “That puts the attorneys general on the front lines to stop his power grab.” Well-known Republicans

A prominent Democrat on the U.S. House Committee on Homeland Security seems to have two different interpretations of the situation at the southern U.S. border where tens of thousands of illegal immigrants from Central America have been apprehended. “I disagree it is in devastating condition,” Texas Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee said of what some are calling a “border crisis” in an interview Thursday with MSNBC. “I think with now 21,000 border patrol agents is under control.” But her statement seems to contradict the one currently on Jackson Lee’s congressional website. “She believes that our country currently has deficient border security,

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Friday said it has closed two laboratories and halted some shipments of dangerous disease samples after discovering new safety breaches, including one that involved the dangerous avian flu. The CDC, which is already under fire for safety mishaps involving live anthrax, said samples that were sent in March to the Department of Agriculture for research were contaminated with the highly infections virus H5N1. The flu samples from the Roybal Campus in Atlanta were destroyed as soon as the CDC realized the mistake. CDC Director Thomas Frieden said he didn’t learn about the incident

The White House budget office on Friday projected the 2014 budget deficit would be $583 billion, about $66 billion less than projected earlier this year. In the mid-session review by the Office of Management and Budget, the administration found the deficit would be 3.4 percent of GDP and nearly $1 billion less than last year’s deficit. Acting OMB Director Brian Deese touted the recent decline in unemployment as a factor in the lower deficit projection. “Businesses have added nearly 10 million new jobs over the past 52 months,” he wrote in a blog post. Deese also cited rising home prices as lifting more

Remember those civics courses that taught "how a bill becomes a law"? Well, they need a follow-up called "how a law becomes a sham." The lesson would focus on the ways in which Congress — usually amid an uproar over some particularly sleazy activity — bars behavior that most people would know is wrong, law or no law. Later, when nobody´s looking, Congress backtracks. The latest example is the Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge (STOCK) Act, which explicitly bars lawmakers and staffers from spreading or trading on inside information. The law passed in 2012 only after CBS´ 60 Minutes aired

Despite fiery statements issued by Hamas spokesmen over the past 48 hours, it was obvious Tuesday night that the Islamist movement was searching for ways to rid itself of the current escalation. Hamas feels that it has been forced into a confrontation with Israel – one that it did not want at this stage because of its increased isolation and financial crisis.
