Congress is moving with what one senator called "lightning speed" to help thousands of military veterans enduring long wait times for VA medical care. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to discuss an ongoing criminal investigation on the record. BAGHDAD – Al Qaeda-inspired militants seized effective control Wednesday of Saddam Hussein´s hometown of Tikrit, expanding their offensive closer to the Iraqi capital as soldiers and security forces abandoned their posts following clashes with the insurgents. Fighters from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant took control a day earlier of much of Mosul, Iraq´s second-largest city, in a major blow to the authority of the country´s Shiite government. An estimated half a million residents fled the economically important city. Residents reached by telephone in Sunni-dominated Tikrit said the Sunni militant group had taken over several police stations. They spoke on

Rep. Jeb Hensarling, who for months has pushed back against pressure from House conservatives to seek a top leadership position in the next Congress, is reconsidering in light of Majority Leader Eric Cantor´s stunning primary loss Tuesday. "I am humbled by the many people who have approached me about serving our Republican Conference in a different capacity in the future," Hensarling said in a statement provided to National Journal. "There are many ways to advance the causes of freedom and free enterprise, and I am prayerfully considering the best way I can serve in those efforts." According to several senior Republicans, Hensarling,

Thousands of illegal immigrants flooding the U.S.-Mexico border are overwhelming federal resources and facilities. Word-of-mouth and news reports that U.S. Border Patrol agents are giving perceived amnesty to children migrants has apparently spread in Central America and may be prompting more hopefuls to make the dangerous journey north. La Prensa, a popular newspaper in Honduras with a circulation of more than 60,000 units, recently released a report called "U.S. military base in California used to house juveniles." A translation from Spanish to English shows that the La Prensa report reads, "According to authorities today announced the base, the [children] will

HOUSTON, Texas--The massive influx of adults and minors crossing into the U.S. from Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador has brought the Customs and Border Protection agency (CPB) past its capacity to provide security at the U.S./Mexico border, according to the National Border Patrol Council (NBPC). In an interview with Breitbart Texas, NBPC Vice President Shawn Moran revealed that the Mexican cartels control the flow of illegal immigrants across Mexico through the monopoly on coyotes, otherwise known as human smugglers. “Mexican cartels are exploiting this crisis to get their shipments through. Titans of the Washington GOP establishment are bracing for more potential defeats after grassroots-fueled conservative economics professor Dave Brat crushed House Majority Leader Eric Cantor by double digits on Tuesday. The top two GOP establishment icons grassroots conservatives are targeting next are Sens. Lamar Alexander of Tennessee and Thad Cochran of Mississippi. Brat’s campaign against Cantor laser-focused on the majority leader’s support for comprehensive immigration reform, and how amnesty would economically hurt American workers. Brat ran on the message of Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL), an immigration hawk who’s argued against amnesty and an increase in legal immigration based on the economic

The Department of Health and Human Services will spent an estimated $1.15 billion this year caring for minors in its Undocumented Alien Children (UAC) program, and Senate Democrats said Tuesday that they want to add an additional $1 billion for 2015. The program, part of the agency´s Office of Refugee Resettlement, is responsible for the health and welfare of children who cross the U.S. border illegally and arrive without parents. An unprecedented flood of such children has arrived in recent weeks, with leaked photos showing overcrowded holding facilities run by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement division of the Department of

The Associated Press has called the race for David Brat. (This has been a breaking news update. Earlier story below.) Economist David Brat leads House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-7th, by more than 6,000 votes with 175 of 243 precincts reporting, according to the Virginia State Board of Elections. Brat, a Henrico resident and economist at Randolph-Macon College, has 27,372 votes to Cantor´s 21,097. The stormy Republican primary in the 7th District has exposed discontent among Republican Party activists and has drawn national attention. Immigration reform drew much debate during the contest that played out in voters’ mailboxes

President Barack Obama Tuesday suggested that the U.S. government should follow Australia’s example in dealing with shooting sprees, which involved strict gun bans on semiautomatic and automatic weapons. “Australia had a mass shooting [in 1996] similar to Columbine and Newtown, and just said, ‘That’s it, we’re not seeing that again,’ and basically imposed very severe tough gun laws and they haven’t had a mass shooting since,” Obama said, after he was asked for his reaction to recent shooting episodes in California and Oregon. Those laws included the confiscation of nearly all handguns and rifles. “We can have respect

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Immigration was not on the June legislative agenda released by Majority Leader Eric Cantor. It was only fleetingly discussed at a closed-door conference meeting this morning. And many lawmakers are being kept in the dark about an effort led by three House Republicans to gather support to bring the issue to the floor in coming weeks. But in quiet conversations, the group – comprising Reps. Paul Ryan (R-WI), Mario Diaz-Balart (R-FL) and Mick Mulvaney (R-SC) – is asking House Republicans one question: “do you want to do immigration reform now, later, or never?” “It´s nothing in detail,” said a

College professor David Brat knocked off House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R., Va.) Tuesday in the biggest congressional upset in years. Mr. Brat ran an underfunded campaign based in part on Mr. Cantor’s supposed support for comprehensive immigration reform, when Mr. Cantor has for months been seen by immigration reform advocates as the key roadblock to House legislation. Mr. Brat was so unknown that his Wikipedia entry was only two sentences before Tuesday night. The staggering Republican primary defeat tonight of Eric Cantor, the second highest-ranking Republican in the House of Representatives and the third most-powerful Republican in Washington, is a reminder of just how volatile American politics has become. And how responsive. Eric Cantor wasn’t supposed to lose. His own pollster had him up by, get this, 34 points the other week. He’d raised nearly $5 million, and in the past two weeks spent $1 million against his rival’s $79,000. Not enough. There’s a lot of triumphalist talk tonight about sending a message to Washington and the establishment vs. the outsiders and all

Texas State Sen. Wendy Davis suggested that the Republican stance on immigration is a racist one, and that conservatives simply don’t like “people who don’t look like them.” “You need look no further than what happened in Arizona with their anti-immigration bill and the withdrawal of tourism and the impact to their economy as a consequence of what ideological thinkers did to that state,” the Democrat said at a Human Rights Campaign PAC fundraiser in Austin, The Daily Caller reported. Miss Davis is running for governor against Republican Attorney General Greg Abbott, who is leading by double digits in most polls.

Retailers are starting to push a new trend in menswear: the short suit. The ensemble looks like a regular suit from the waist up, with a sport coat over a button-down shirt and sometimes a tie or bowtie. Instead of trousers, however, the suit´s bottoms are cropped at the knee. J. Crew, Topman, Asos, and Barneys are among the retailers selling the short suit this season. They may be taking cues from fashion icon Pharrell Williams, who donned tuxedo shorts to the Academy Awards earlier this year.
