New NHS statins guidance
´risks harming patients´

Telegraph [UK], by Edward Malnick

Millions of people over the age of 50 risk harming their health if they follow new NHS guidance telling them to take statins, leading doctors have warned the Health Secretary. [Snip] The group cites research, independent of the drug industry, showing that statins have been associated with a 48 percent increase in the risk of diabetes in middle-aged women. Other potential side effects could include depression, fatigue and erectile dysfunction, they warn. In a letter to Jeremy Hunt, the prominent clinicians, including the head of the Royal College of Physicians and a former chairman of the Royal College of General

Comments:
Ahhh, good! Britain´s highly respectable, heaviest hitters are going after statins now. The proposed new guidance has been formulated by Orwellian-named NICE (National Institute for Clinical Excellence)--usually a sure sign that you should distrust that very body responsible for promoting the Liverpool Pathway (to Death).

Just yesterday, my new PCP tried to get me on a statin drug. After I listed all the names of the statins I´d tried, and which caused me problems, he said, unhappily, "I´m hearing ´No´." Yep. The answer is no.

A friend was recently put on statins, despite no weight problem and a strong family history of diabetes.

This article worries me.

I´m with you, OP. And the doctor just wouldn´t believe I was having real side effects from statins - in spite of all the warnings and history. The stuff nearly killed my cousin and side effects were severe with my brother - we clearly have a genetic conflict with these drugs.

Statins are the most overhyped, overprescribed drugs on the market, in my opinion. Useful for some, of course, but should be prescribed far more cautiously.

I believe statins should be approached with caution. I have managed not to take them as the "normal" cholesterol guidelines were right on for me, then left me a little high, then went up again - sort of.

Others in the family - one who has HBP and has had a stroke - are another story. But still they are monitored and watched for signs that even their moderate use of statins may cause problems. Higher doses, which many are on, really spook me.

Re #1, I wouldn´t get hung up on weight. One of the first signs of diabetes is weight loss. And not everyone with diabetes is overweight. Mary Tyler Moore and Halle Berry come to mind.

It was that strong family history of diabetes, plus other things of which you may not be aware, that probably caused your friend to be given a statin.

Type 1 diabetes usually involves weight loss and Type 2 usually involves weight gain. See http://www.phlaunt.com/diabetes/14046739.php

Statins are pressed upon Type 2 diabetics because we are at least twice as likely to suffer cardiac problems than non-diabetics.

ANYone who is prescribed a statin drug should read the following:

http://www.phlaunt.com/diabetes/14046942.php

And any diabetic wondering how to dodge the odds of a heart attack should read this piece:

http://www.phlaunt.com/diabetes/15945839.php

I´ve followed the author´s research and advice since 1999 and it´s why I´m still on metformin and not some more dangerous drug--or insulin. Early on I was told that, on average, Type 2 diabetics deteriorate to the point where insulin is needed six years after diagnosis. It´s a great incentive to take care of yourself.

Was prescribed statins month ago - 10 mg. - totally exhausted - so I told the doctor and he said to break it in half. Personally, I felt much healthier without them. I am trying to figure out some other way to feel alive and still healthy.

Re weight loss as symptom of Type 2 diabetes, here is the Mayo Clinic´s article. We have a Type 2 sufferer in our family. Initial weight loss was a symptom. It is may also be a symptom of Type 1. It has to do with excretion of large amounts of sugar due to increased urination.

Here is the section on weight loss at the Mayo Clinic link:

Weight loss. Despite eating more than usual to relieve hunger, you may lose weight. Without the ability to metabolize glucose, the body uses alternative fuels stored in muscle and fat. Calories are lost as excess glucose is released in the urine.

Husband has borderline diabetes type 2 - he has been on Lovastatin for some time now as well as metformin [he´s very obedient guy when the doctor speaks]. A neurological consult for possible diabetic neuropathy of feet and legs pronounced the numbness and tingling of unknown origin not related to diabetes. He discussed his loss of sensation with another diabetic friend - they both agreed it feels like wearing a thick stocking all the time. Now his hands are tingly too. They both question the statin.
