55,000 JCPS students of all
incomes to get free meals

Courier-Journal [Louisville, KY], by Antoinette Konz

Nearly 55,000 students at 95 public schools in Jefferson County would receive free breakfast and lunch this fall — regardless of their income — under a plan the school board is expected to approve Tuesday night. New federal eligibility rules enable high-poverty districts across the country to offer free breakfast and lunch to all students at schools with enough kids that are certified as qualifying for free lunch, said Julia Bauscher, director of School and Community Nutrition Services with Jefferson County Public Schools. "This is huge for our district," Bauscher said. "This will not only save our families money, it

Comments:
Did you know that this federally-funded (that´s us!) program is going on across the country this summer? Started in just a few states, it expanded to all the states this year.

In some districts, these meals are being served at parks and recreational centers as well.

One Los Angeles journalist does not approve. His editorial is well worth a read:

That’s not the school bell you hear clanging, it’s the dinner bell. The soup’s on this summer at an LAUSD campus near you.

The first ever “Food That’s In, When School Is Out” program kicked off Tuesday, June 10, and runs through Aug. 8, dishing up an estimated 4.2 million free meals to kids age 1 through 18.

Thanks to a grant from U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Los Angeles Unified School District will open 317 schools this summer to serve free meals with no income requirement. And if you can’t make it to a school, the chow line is also coming to more than 100 city parks throughout Los Angeles.

In his estimation (and ours) this removes from parents yet another responsibility - that of providing food for their children.

Read more here - it´s worth it to hear someone speak out against this travesty. McIntyre´s column is published in newspapers in many California cities. A good thing:

Correction: Posted artile is talking about free meals this fall.

In addition school districts in all the states are beginning to serve free meals to kids up to age 18 during the summer months.

Sorry if I created confusion, but the free meal program appears to be a year-round thing now. Federally funded, of course.

Here´s the story on Louisville´s summer meal program. They are indeed going year-round with free meals:

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - As Jefferson County Public Schools leaders planned to vote on a measure that would provide free lunch for all students next fall, students throughout the district enjoyed free meals Tuesday. This summer, several dozen JCPS schools began serving breakfast and lunch free of charge as part of the district´s Summer Food Service program.

From the messy to those with finicky tastes, Tammy Miller experiences many things as a nutrition manager for the summer food service program at Hawthorne Elementary.

"A lot of the sites are open to any of the children in the neighborhood," said Miller. "The only criteria is they must be 18 or under and they can come and have breakfast and then they can come back and have lunch."

The healthy meals, which are offered 100 percent free of charge, must meet federal nutrition guidelines.

http://www.wave3.com/story/25741645/jcps-offers-free-summer-meals-to-anyone-18-and-under

A Search of "school free summer meals" will reveal that this is happening across the country this summer. The cost has to be huge. And once it´s in place, will it ever cease? Doubtful.

It is a quandary. It does not seem right that meals are provided for children by the school instead of their families. But, food is cheap and makes a significant difference in learning and health. The school lunch program was begun because draftees were not healthy enough to join the Army.

Parents working hard to feed their families is such an outdated concept.

What about clothing? Shouldn´t we be giving the little darlings coupons to Old Navy and Urban Outfitters? After all, appearance is of great importance in building self esteem.

The general trend seems to be government dependency, for parents and children alike.

When children fail to mature into adults, the result is a narcissist. I understand narcissism may no longer listed as a personality disorder, due to it being so widespread.

If you know someone who feels ´entitled´, they are probably a narcissist.

And this free food program will undoubtedly be a big help with all the illegal kids who are flooding in and being dumped in various places.

Read the piece linked in #3. At least one journalist gets it. The LAUSD and other school districts are indeed "serving up dependency".

If one is fed for the first 18 years by any public entity, how does one ever get the motivation to work toward a goal and succeed on one´s own? That is the bigger question that should be posed here.

And contrary to one opinion on the thread, food is NOT cheap. These programs cost a lot of money. Look at the data. In Louisville a few schools are doing this; in the Los Angeles Unified School District, hundreds of schools are in the program. All are federally funded - and they are in cities and towns across the country, so no one can point a finger at one particular area.

The purpose is to indoctrination parents and students into thinking the govn is the only entity that can raise your child properly. TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida’s political landscape is being upended by a landmark legal ruling that one legal expert says could influence the way other states draw their congressional districts. A circuit judge ruled late Thursday that the state Legislature illegally drew Florida’s congressional districts to primarily benefit the Republican Party. Judge Terry Lewis ruled that two of the state’s 27 congressional districts were invalid and that the map must be redrawn. Justin Levitt, a law professor at Loyola Law School who tracks redistricting cases, called the decision a “big victory” for Florida’s voters that could be a model for other states to
