Bullet-proof blanket to protect
kids against school shootings

Steve Walker, a 43-year-old father of two, said he developed the orange-colored shield -- compared by US broadcaster NPR to a yoga mat -- to give children greater protection from shootings and tornadoes. Walker says he was left frustrated by the murder of 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in December 2012 and by a deadly tornado that hit schools in Oklahoma in May 2013. (Snip) Everytown for Gun Safety, the group set up by billionaire former New York mayor Michael Bloomberg to end gun violence, says there have been 74 school shootings since Sandy Hook. Raise your hand if you think terrorist won´t be the first to buy these bulletproof blankets and modify them for their own use. (The bright red color seems to be a "dead" giveaway as to where user is). Note that the school shootings are all occurring (escalating) on 0bama´s presidency as the economy is faltering and the hope for jobs dwindles.

I´d be the first to say that any protection is better none, but soft armor like this will not protect against rifle bullets, only relatively slow pistol ammunition. Crazed shooters would likely take this into account and choose their weapon accordingly. I also share OP´s concerns about the proposed implementations of this idea and question whether hiding under a bullet-resistant blanket would be more effective than running and dodging.

All this massive violence coincides with the meteoric rise of liberalism. Just a few decades ago, almost nobody had a photo ID, few people locked their houses, and you could walk into any public school anywhere. No schools had guards.

Get rid of the run-away liberism, and the violence will go away too.

First, there´s no such thing as "bulletproof". As another poster pointed out they might work against smaller caliber handgun ammo, but rifle or high power handgun, not so much. And making it orange or bright red makes it a target to a shooter, not a protective blanket.

Second, can anyone list the "74 school shootings" referenced by Bloomies Gun Grabbers? I can´t....

The blanket idea is stupid and expensive. The cost of armed guards is very expensive.

Armed staff is a good alternative, but many don´t feel comfortable with staff members carrying weapons and there is the possibility of them being overpowered or just careless, ironically providing a firearm to the assailant.

I propose hiding several lock boxes containing firearms around the campus. Staff members who elect to take special training would be issued a key for the boxes along with knowledge of their locations.

A sign indicating that the school is protected by lethal response should be prominently displayed. A potential shooter now knows he has to contend with the possibility that any staff member may be armed in moments. This will probably deter most shooters from trying, it will slow down any who continue as they must now be cautions, and they may even be taken down by one of the weapons.

Also, I would include a bright lightweight vest in each lock box with the firearm to allow easy identification if needed when the police arrive.

Beirut - Fears continue to spread in Lebanon about the presence of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) after the Sunni militant group claimed responsibility for Wednesday’s attack on a central Beirut hotel, the third such attack in two weeks. The militant group has expanded its operations in both Syria and Iraq, giving rise to fears that it could also seek to start an insurgency against the Lebanese government at a time when the country still has no president. In a statement published on Friday, ISIS announced that a Saudi suicide bomber had attacked the Duroy Hotel in central Beirut. Three police officers were wounded in the attack.
