Looking Back at the
Tea Leaves on Cantor

National Review Online, by John Fund

Eric Cantor’s loss is historic. No sitting House majority leader has lost an election since the office was created in 1899. While Cantor’s loss was a stunning surprise, the warning signals were around for a while: 1. Cantor managed to muddle his message on immigration. His direct-mail pieces claimed he was foursquare against amnesty. But the newspapers covering Washington, D.C., quoted him as saying he was seeking a compromise with President Obama on immigration. Voters resolved the seeming contradiction by deciding to vote out their establishment congressman. Cantor’s loss destroys any chance of a comprehensive immigration bill passing the House this

Now Cantor will have more time to attend Davos Meetings as well as meetings with RINOs who are planning to take out the Tea Party.

Two other items:

1) As the Republican Party has more and more ignored or made fun of grass roots, people have gone to radio and internet to hear directly from the candidates.

2) Social media has made fundraising more accessible for grassroots candidates and allowed them to get their message out for free.

Us Virginia tea-party types have detested Cantor for his positions and his arrogance. That´s been well-known for years around here. Congratulations to Jamie Radtke and the other conservative Virginia leaders who got some passion into the door-knockers. Hat tip to Laura Ingraham who led the media charge against Cantor, whose accent always sounds fake to me.

Early contenders for the post are House Financial Services Committee chairman Jeb Hensarling and House Budget Committee chairman Paul Ryan.

Paul Ryan should be taken out as well. Has he already won his primary? Too bad if so. Maybe this Cantor situation will make him rethink his position on amnesty.

Having worked a couple of campaigns, I can tell you what the first things you do are when your candidate tells you that they plan to go take a couple of weeks off in July. First, you laugh uncomfortably and try to figure out why they would make such a bad joke. Then, when you find out they’re not kidding, you look for a suitably sharp object to slit your wrists. But we may have found the exception to the rule out in Iowa where Senate candidate Joni Ernst is out of pocket for the next fortnight for a very

TEL AVIV -- Israel has deployed its 8th Iron Dome anti-missile battery into the field, and it became fully operational Friday afternoon. The Iron Dome has intercepted rockets at a success rate of 90% thus far in downing incoming rocket barrages from Gaza, according to the Israel Defense Forces. Each Iron Dome missile battery costs about $50 million dollars to make. Each anti-missile interceptor costs around $100,000. Each unit can defend the airspace of about 60 square miles. Each Iron Dome battery consists of 3 units: A radar vehicle, a mobile control unit (MCU), and a missile launcher. The radar

As I read this New York Times story – ‘Fertility Clinics Scan for the Strongest Embryo — about chromosomal testing of in-vitro fertilization embryos, I kept waiting for the counterpoint to the idea that scientists could help create a purer race. Finally, the opposition arose: Still, critics say, if the test is at all inaccurate, some good people might be thrown out or defective ones chosen. I’m sorry, the actual sentence said “good embryos might be thrown out.” I don’t know how I made that mistake. In any case, embryos get “thrown out” whether the test is administered or not.

On Friday´s Hardball, Chris Matthews and Howard Dean slammed the supposedly "lunatic" Republican Party for opposing President Obama´s $3.7 billion request to deal with the ongoing crisis at the U.S-Mexico border. Dean likened the political stalemate over this issue and in general in Washington to McCarthyism in the 1950s: "It reminds me of the ´who lost China´ debate...where one side is frothing at the mouth and finding communists under every bed; and the other side – including some reasonable Republicans...actually trying to run the country." Matthews endorsed the former Vermont governor´s take, and targeted fiscal conservatives/the Tea Party as somehow

The Pentagon´s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency conducted a test April 21 with Teledyne Scientific & Imaging. As the round makes its way along the errant trajectory it suddenly curves, corrects itself and hits the intended target. DARPA had a promising prototype for its Extreme Accuracy Tasked Ordinance (EXACTO) .50-caliber bullets in 2012, but the new video confirms that the

When Obama administration officials revealed plans this week to rebuild the White House’s bowling lanes, they failed to mention that the George W. Bush administration paid for a renovation of the facility just before President Obama took office. A former official in the Bush White House, John Dorff, said the bowling lanes in the basement of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building were rebuilt in 2007-08 in a project that took several months to complete. The renovations were needed to repair water damage caused by an unrelated construction project in the building. “Our office worked with Brunswick to replace and repair

THE LATEST blow-up between the United States and Germany over spying suggests that the Obama administration has not been observing the president’s pithiest foreign policy maxim, “Don’t do stupid [stuff].” For a year relations with Berlin have been strained by disclosures of National Security Agency surveillance of German communications and the subsequent refusal of the Obama administration to accept Chancellor Angela Merkel’s demand for a no-spying agreement. When it was revealed last fall that Ms. Merkel’s cellphone had been monitored, President Obama rightly stopped the operation; he had previously ordered a review of foreign

As a veteran, and as a governor who has supported Texas National Guard deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, I can understand the emotions behind isolationism. Many people are tired of war, and the urge to pull back is a natural, human reaction. Unfortunately, we live in a world where isolationist policies would only endanger our national security even further. That’s why it’s disheartening to hear fellow Republicans, such as Sen. Rand Paul (Ky.), suggest that our nation should ignore what’s happening in Iraq. The main problem with this argument is that it means ignoring the profound threat that the group

As is his wont, President Obama is treating the border crisis — more than 50,000 unaccompanied children crossing illegally — as a public relations problem. Where to photo op and where not. He still hasn’t enunciated a policy. He may not even have one. Will these immigrants be allowed to stay? Seven times was Obama’s homeland security secretary asked this on “Meet the Press.” Seven times he danced around the question. Presidential press secretary Josh Earnest was ostensibly more forthcoming: “It’s unlikely that most of those kids will qualify for humanitarian relief. .?.?. They will be sent back.” This was

Glenn Beck has set up Mercury One Children and Family Border Relief Fund to help illegals coming into the United States. He’s already raised $600,000. Beck stated that Obama would not have to step in and ask for $3.7 billion if private charities would pick up the slack and give to the swarm of illegals crossing the border. Is he kidding? Do we really need more churches and non-profits enabling this blatant attack on America? Rich people and liberal elite billionaires have no skin in the game when it comes to the consequences of illegal immigration so what do they care? The facts are simple. The IRS systematically targeted conservative and Tea Party groups after their activism proved decisive in the 2010 midterm elections—Obama’s famous “shellacking.” The effects of this targeting were widespread. Some Tea Party groups were neutered in the months before the 2012 presidential election. Few of the explanations or justifications of this targeting provided by IRS leaders and Obama administration officials have held up. IRS officials at first denied that any targeting had taken place. That was false. They later claimed that the targeting had involved only low-level employees in the Cincinnati office. That was false. They argued
