Boeing hopes its crew
capsule will replace shuttle

Florida Today [Melbourne, FL], by James Dean

Original Article

Posted By:ElSid, 6/10/2014 3:36:28 PM

Cape Canaveral, FL - In the former shop where shuttle main engines were serviced, Boeing hopes to assemble a new commercial crew capsule that it envisions will end the gap in human space flight missions launched from Florida. Inside the renovated production facility Monday, Boeing (BA) displayed a mock-up of its CST-100 capsule, less than two weeks after the younger SpaceX unveiled a new Dragon capsule designed to carry astronauts. (Snip) Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., said he expects NASA to select multiple winners if its budget next year holds close to the $805 million the Senate has proposed.

Comments:
It rankles me that one of our crown jewels, our technological genius, is being squandered and schools are dumbing down the next generation of scientist for failing "green" jobs. Also, that Congress gives them less than a BILLION dollar budget when 0bama regularly gives this amount to whatever serves his political purpose here and abroad. Congress needs to address directly our "brain drain" by funding these projects that have continuing payoffs as the time goes on. To equate NASA to militarizing space is akin to the dRATS loathing service personnel till 0bama´s current GITMO actions requires them.

Russia threatened to cut off Ukraine´s gas later on Monday after the two sides failed to strike a deal that would have saved Europe from supply disruptions, stoking the worst East-West crisis since the Cold War. Ukraine hosted the last-gasp talks hoping to avoid an energy crisis compounding the new pro-Western leaders´ problems as they confront a two-month separatist insurgency threatening the very survival of their ex-Soviet state. But a top official from Russia´s state gas firm Gazprom said that the EU-brokered talks that stretched through the night had failed to bridge the two sides´ acrimonious disagreement over price and how much

The feds are offering big money to anyone who can hunt and kill wild pigs on federal lands in South Carolina — the latest move in the government’s battle against an invasive species causing an estimated $1.5 billion in damage to farmland and property each year. Kiev, Ukraine - The Ukrainian Defense Ministry said Saturday that pro-Russian separatists shot down a large military transport plane in the country´s unsettled east and that service personnel aboard were killed. The statement on the ministry´s website says the plane was downed at night as it approached an airport at Lugansk. The statement did not say how many people were on board the Il-76 transport plane, which was carrying service members as well as equipment and food. The statement said that the rebels "cynically and perfidiously" downed the plane using anti-aircraft guns and heavy caliber machine guns. It expressed sympathy

Sen. John McCain added Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Martin Dempsey to his list of people the President should fire over the deteriorating situation in Iraq. In an interview Friday on CNN’s “The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer,” the Arizona Republican also called for the United States to conduct airstrikes in Iraq to stop advances by the militant group the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, or ISIS. Asked whom he thinks should be fired, McCain said: “Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, number one.” McCain faulted the Obama administration for failing to make a status of forces agreement with Iraq that

Gil Kerlikowske, commissioner of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, said Friday that many of the illegal immigrant children his agents are encountering trying to slip across the U.S.-Mexico border have never even seen a doctor before. He described scenes of Border Patrol agents changing diapers and heating baby formula in order to care for some of the youngest children, and said agents are being asked to do things way beyond their skill set — particularly for so many of the agents who are young, single men. “I’ve been down there, a lot, and spent a lot of time and I’ve seen these agents doing incredible things,” he said.

But even for a Senator—an elected office with the backing of an entire state—ticking off powerful people can have consequences. He hasn’t set foot in the NRSC in more than a year, sources say.

The Transportation Security Administration has been moving away from a system that assumes all passengers, including children and the elderly, pose the same security risk. For example, the TSA now operates PreCheck lines at 115 airports that let passengers who pass a background check zip through without removing coats, belts, shoes or removing laptop computers from carrying cases. Now the TSA plans to apply its so-called risk-based security system to the screening of luggage. Under the current TSA screening system, every bag gets the same level of scrutiny. As part of a $2.2-billion plan over the next five years, the TSA says

RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. – It´s perhaps appropriate that President Barack Obama is vacationing this weekend in California, where the state flag features a roaming grizzly. The restless president, who has compared himself to a caged animal on recent wanderings by declaring the "bear is loose," took a long Father´s Day weekend away with his wife and older daughter. The visit to the desert resort area of Palm Springs is one of the ways Obama has been trying to escape during his sixth year cloistered in the White House. ISIS, the brutal insurgent/terrorist group formerly known as al Qaeda in Iraq, has seized much of western and northern Iraq and even threatens towns not far from Baghdad. From where did ISIS spring? One of George W. Bush´s most toxic legacies is the introduction of al Qaeda into Iraq, which is the ISIS mother ship. If this wasn´t so tragic it would be supremely ironic, because before the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003, top Bush officials were insisting that there was an al Qaeda-Iraq axis of evil. Their claims that Saddam Hussein´s men were training members of al Qaeda how to

Anaheim, CA - President Obama, appearing emboldened after his recent move to cut carbon emissions from coal-fired power plants, on Saturday ridiculed members of Congress who deny climate change or plead scientific ignorance as an alibi for avoiding an uncomfortable truth. Speaking in gleefully sarcastic terms to a commencement ceremony at the University of California, Irvine, Mr. Obama likened those who deny climate change to people who would have told John F. Kennedy, at the dawn of the space program, that the moon “was made of cheese.” He saved his most scathing words for lawmakers who say they are not qualified to
