Detroit automakers pledge $26M
to protect city pensions, DIA art

Detroit Free Press [MI], by Matt Helms & Mark Stryker

Original Article

Posted By:StormCnter, 6/10/2014 9:24:05 AM

With $26 million in donations from the Detroit Three automakers, the Detroit Institute of Arts said Monday it has now raised 70% of the $100 million it has promised toward the grand bargain. The grand bargain brings together the equivalent of $816 million from national and local foundations, the DIA and the state of Michigan to spare the museum’s collection from a possible sale while easing cuts to city pensioners during Detroit’s bankruptcy. Even amid uncertainty about whether retirees will accept the terms of the grand bargain, city and state leaders celebrated the Detroit Three’s joint announcement at the DIA.

Comments:
Oh, I´m thrilled to see my tax dollars going to save pensioners and art in Detroit. But, wait..."the retirees might not accept...".

The IDF is conducting a massive manhunt for three Israeli teens kidnapped Thursday night. Dr. Cornel West is a leading liberal public intellectual. He gave an interview to NewsOne immediately following the 2012 Election that was nothing if not provocative. Dr. West said he was happy Romney didn’t win, but far from satisfied with the Obama record and especially with the just-ended presidential campaign: So we end up with such a narrow, truncated political discourse, as the major problems—ecological catastrophe, climate change, global warming. So it’s very sad. I mean, I’m glad there was not a right-wing takeover, but we end up with a Republican, a Rockefeller Republican in blackface, with Barack Obama, so

National uproar over the Veterans Affairs scandal should refocus the nation´s attention to the issue of health care rationing. Under VA care, 40 patients died while waiting for treatment at a Phoenix, Ariz., facility. Not only is that the tip of the iceberg in terms of what government-run health care means for patients, it should also sound the alarm about the newest tactic for rationing care, bedside rationing. In an effort to bend the health care cost curve, oncology doctors may soon be encouraged to do the government’s and insurers’ bidding in rationing high-cost health care treatments and procedures. So, instead of relying

Reporting from Washington— The armed Taliban fighters who captured Bowe Bergdahl in southeastern Afghanistan on June 30, 2009, quickly handed him to a far more dangerous group that shuttled him between hide-outs in Pakistan´s rugged tribal belt for the next five years. For much of that time, CIA drones trolled the skies overhead, searching for signs of the missing U.S. soldier. Until late last year, the drones fired missiles that killed hundreds of fighters and at least one senior leader of the militant group, known as the Haqqani network. A five-month halt in the CIA drone strikes this year coincided with intensifying efforts

Today — Father’s Day — children of all ages will show their appreciation for their dads with gifts, cards or just spending time together. But for a growing number of men this Father’s Day, the best gift is one their kids can’t offer: a job. For that we can blame our chronically sluggish economy — and our bankrupt leadership in Washington. True, the nation churned out 217,000 new jobs in May. That means we’ve finally recovered all the jobs we’ve lost since the financial collapse, and the number countrywide is now at an all-time high. Even so, the picture is more complex. As

For at least three reasons, the contemporary persecution of Christians demands attention: It is occurring on a massive scale, it is underreported, and in many parts of the world it is rapidly growing. The Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life finds that Christians are suffering persecution in more places today than any other religious group; between 2006 and 2012, Pew says, they were targeted for harassment in 151 countries—three-quarters of the world’s states. Similar findings are reported by the Vatican, Newsweek, the Economist, and the 60-year-old Christian support group Open Doors. Most people in the West are unaware of

RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. – It´s perhaps appropriate that President Barack Obama is vacationing this weekend in California, where the state flag features a roaming grizzly. The restless president, who has compared himself to a caged animal on recent wanderings by declaring the "bear is loose," took a long Father´s Day weekend away with his wife and older daughter. The visit to the desert resort area of Palm Springs is one of the ways Obama has been trying to escape during his sixth year cloistered in the White House. ISIS, the brutal insurgent/terrorist group formerly known as al Qaeda in Iraq, has seized much of western and northern Iraq and even threatens towns not far from Baghdad. From where did ISIS spring? One of George W. Bush´s most toxic legacies is the introduction of al Qaeda into Iraq, which is the ISIS mother ship. If this wasn´t so tragic it would be supremely ironic, because before the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003, top Bush officials were insisting that there was an al Qaeda-Iraq axis of evil. Their claims that Saddam Hussein´s men were training members of al Qaeda how to

Anaheim, CA - President Obama, appearing emboldened after his recent move to cut carbon emissions from coal-fired power plants, on Saturday ridiculed members of Congress who deny climate change or plead scientific ignorance as an alibi for avoiding an uncomfortable truth. Speaking in gleefully sarcastic terms to a commencement ceremony at the University of California, Irvine, Mr. Obama likened those who deny climate change to people who would have told John F.
