Killing a Patient to Save His Life
New York Times, by Kate Murphy

Original Article

Pittsburgh - Trauma patients arriving at an emergency room here after sustaining a gunshot or knife wound may find themselves enrolled in a startling medical experiment. Surgeons will drain their blood and replace it with freezing saltwater. Without heartbeat and brain activity, the patients will be clinically dead. And then the surgeons will try to save their lives. (Snip) But scientists have never tried anything like this in humans, and the unconscious patients will not be able to consent to the procedure. Indeed, the medical center has been providing free bracelets to be worn by skittish citizens here who do not want to participate

Comments:
Something tells me that shooting or stabbing victims are going to come primarily from the poor, minority gene pool. So, is this going to become a racist "survivor" game in the ER?

They´d better hope the human guinea pigs don´t have relatives that accompany them to the hospital, otherwise the researchers might be testing the procedure on trauma victims in their immediate vicinity.

Sigh. Scientific illiteracy on parade! Maybe read the dumbed-down article once, before you spout off? Never mind. It is too much to ask, having been written at a level comprehensible to average fourth graders.

If I show up at a level III trauma center with massive internal injuries, having nearly bled out, with otherwise a less than 10% chance of survival, even less than that of escaping serious and permanent neurological damage, yes please, doctors, do cool me off, repair the damage, and replace my blood. I am not one of the ignorami spouting off with silly Nazi references.

Oh, poor people, why didn´t anybody break the news to you, oh, say three decades ago, that this very technique, called therapeutic hypothermia, is how open heart surgery is performed? And that furthermore, it is standard care in certain traumatic brain injuries? This is just the latest use for an old technique to keep people alive who are busily bleeding to death, long enough to repair the damage?
I can see though, why it would seem a shameful waste to preserve brain tissue that had hardly ever been used. Y´all be sure to send for your opt-out bracelets. If it´s you with your busted head and bleeding gut, your kidneys may still be useful, when the ER docs shake their heads regretfully.

Uber Technologies Inc., the car-sharing service that’s rankling cabbies across the U.S., is facing its biggest protest yet from European drivers who say the smartphone application threatens their livelihoods. More than 30,000 taxi and limo drivers from London to Milan plan to cause traffic snarls in tourist centers and shopping districts. They are asking regulators to apply tougher rules on San Francisco-based Uber, whose software allows customers to order a ride from drivers who don’t need licenses that can cost 200,000 euros ($270,000) apiece. While similar demonstrations this year have led to smashed windshields and traffic chaos in Paris,

Earlier we learned that in 2010, the IRS sent a massive data base full of confidential information belonging to [conservative] tax exempt groups to the FBI just before the 2010 midterm elections. (Snip) Fast forward to four years later and the Department of Justice has been tapped to "investigate" the IRS targeting of conservative groups, even though they were involved in the targeting themselves. This conflict of interest, which involves the Public Integrity Division, FBI and the Civil Division inside DOJ, has members of the House Oversight Committee crying fowl and reiterating the need for a special prosecutor, not DOJ,

Something really doesn’t compute about the Clinton family finances. In an interview Monday, Hillary Clinton claimed that when she and Bill Clinton left the White House, they were $12 million in debt. How in the world did this happen? (Snip) His legal defense fund raised millions for him. Hillary Clinton left the White House with a tidy $8 million book advance. Their finances surely improved from 2000-2008. Beijing - Chinese ships headed for waters near Hawaii on Tuesday to participate for the first time in the world´s largest naval exercises – a rare opportunity to build trust with the US and regional rivals including the Philippines and Japan. China´s participation in the rim of the Pacific exercises, beginning on 26 June, will enable Chinese naval officers to rub shoulders with US counterparts as well as those from countries with which it has maritime disputes in the South China and East China seas. Washington and Beijing have been seeking closer military ties following an incident last December when a US navy cruiser, the USS Cowpens,

Orlando, FL - The judge in George Zimmerman’s defamation lawsuit against NBC Universal is set to hear arguments on a request by the media company to dismiss the case. A hearing has been set for June 19. The case had been postponed pending the conclusion of the Trayvon Martin shooting case. Zimmerman was acquitted of second-degree murder last July in the shooting death of the 17-year-old in Florida. Washington - Pensions for senior generals and admirals would be rolled back to ensure their retirement pay doesn´t exceed their active-duty salaries, according to a measure approved by a Senate panel. In 2007, the Pentagon sought and received authority to modify the cap that determines pensions for three- and four-star generals and admirals in an effort to retain them during war. The change boosted the pensions of some senior officers by 63%. The formula means that a four-star general or admiral retiring with 40 years of experience will receive a pension of $237,144, according to the Pentagon.

The ensemble looks like a regular suit from the waist up, with a sport coat over a button-down shirt and sometimes a tie or bowtie. Instead of trousers, however, the suit´s bottoms are cropped at the knee. J. Crew, Topman, Asos, and Barneys are among the retailers selling the short suit this season. Since its first introduction into our lexicon, the definition of the word metrosexual has changed several times. At first it was used to describe young, urban males who were more interested in fashion, grooming and appearance than the traditional masculine male. Sexuality ran the gamut from officially gay, straight or bisexual. Then an article in Salon.com by Mark Simpson narrowed it down to the following: "He might be officially gay, straight or bisexual, but this is utterly immaterial because he has clearly taken himself as his own love object and pleasure as his sexual preference."
