Truck driver charged in Tracy Morgan
crash had ´Move or get hit´ in Twitter bio

New York Daily News, by Laura Bult, EliRosenberg*

“Move or get hit!” That was the furious motto on a Twitter account bearing the name of a Walmart truck driver charged in the car crash that injured Tracy Morgan and killed his close friend. The biography section of the account bearing the name of Kevin Roper now reads, “Trying to win more than lose! Driving trucks for a living #Walmart.” But an earlier version of the account captured on a cached Web page shows a slightly longer bio section with an eerie threat. “It’s my road move or get hit!” the Twitter account warned. Kevin Roper, 35, of Jonesboro, Ga., has been charged

What is it with semi drivers? I´ve encountered this guy or his twin on more than one road trip, terrifyingly tailgating me and I am no slouch as far as getting on down the road. Perhaps this will result in some attention to this issue on the part of law enforcement and, less likely, even the industry itself.

In any event - how tragic, and my sympathies to all concerned, including the truck driver.

#1, not defending this guy who ran into Tracy Morgan, but sometimes hauling 30 to 40 tons involves some different physics, especially in hilly terrain [as opposed to Hildabeest terrain]. I have seen some drivers going slowly down a hill when they should be aware of a lot of mass/velocity coming up behind them; if you can´t speed up, change lanes to get out of the semi´s way. A big rig has only so much Jake Brake/downshifting/air brake capability on the downhill run.

Having said that, the driver must pay extra attention at all times and anticipate everything!

#1, you obviously don´t know what you are talking about. IF a Walmart truck was riding your bumper, it was because you were going 55 in the right lane of a 65 mph zone. Walmart drivers are certainly among the safest, and slowest, on the highways.

Put aside your bias against Walmart. Try getting information on the crash and understanding what actually happened, not what you dream up.

Once in a while it is necessary for us to travel I-75 in Florida. Right or wrong as far as driving rules go, we always get out of the way of big trucks, especially the ones hauling 2 trailers. Even if they need to stop I don´t see how something that large could come to a stop like a car could.

#3, I´m a little shocked by that unwarranted attack. My post had nothing to do with Walmart and I´m a fast driver. I have had to slow down to 5 or 10 miles above the speed limit in order not to lose my license.

And always, when I can get out of the way I can - I´m a smart driver. But sometimes, say on I-85 in SC near the Georgia line, you can get trapped in front of a semi on speed. When I was growing up, truck drivers of all sorts were a woman driver´s friend, and they still are often, but there are also a lot of aggressives ones seemingly on speed or worse.

This from ABC has a bit more info:

http://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/man-accused-tracy-morgan-crash-heads-court/story?id=24052939

Sources said the truck swerved to avoid the limo, but instead hit it -- causing the limo to lose control, slam into other cars and overturn.

In talking to investigators after the crash, police told ABC News, Roper said he had not realized there was a pocket of slow-moving traffic in front of him until it was too late.

Since the first hours after the accident, investigators have focused on whether Roper dozed off behind the wheel, because he closed in on Morgan’s limo and other slow-moving traffic so quickly and only maneuvered to avoid a crash at the last moment.

Prayers for all.

(Interesting that spokesperson says driver doesn´t have social media account - wondering if it´s his kids, since they asked forgiveness for their dad.)

Sad situation. My guess is that the driver is a decent, hard-working guy trying to make a living for his family.

My husband made an interesting point this morning. If the limo was slowing down or stopped because of traffic he is required by law (as a licensed company) to have his flashers on to warn vehicles behind him of a slow down.

I´d also like to thank many posters for their defense of truck drivers.

Regardless of how the facts lay out in this accident, ANY driver (and worse if he drives semis) that is convinced "It´s my road, move over or get hit!" is something he believes enough to post online is a dangerous, stupid egomaniac.

It totally depends on how much MONEY the truck owners and drivers and their unions GIVE to the state transportation departments, whether they get to speed on the thoroughfares or not.

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Former South Carolina state treasurer Thomas Ravenel has presented signatures to get on the ballot as an independent running for Lindsey Graham´s U.S. Senate seat. Ravenel said he gave 17,000 signatures when he arrived Monday at the state Election Commission in Columbia. Election officials will have to verify the signatures. That process is expected to take about a month. Ravenel became state treasurer as a Republican in 2007. He had to resign months after his election when he was charged with buying cocaine for himself and his friends. Ravenel says he is running to reduce the size of government,

There’s a very simple solution to this Obamanation that’s occurring on the southern border. Enforce the law. By which I mean, deport them. Deport them all, not just the latest huddled masses yearning to live for free, forever, in Section 8 housing on EBT cards. No, we must deport all of the 12 or 20 or 30 million illegal aliens who are turning this country into a Third World flophouse. Can we do it? Yes, we can. A few years back, Marsha Coakley famously said, “Technically, it’s not illegal to be illegal in Massachusetts.” The ways things are going, it won’t be long before

Summertime, and the living is easy: backyard barbecues, beach books, plastic surgery. It’s the worst-kept secret in Washington. Plenty of those glowing faces returning from vacation are the result of a doctor, not a few days off. Summer, especially in an election year, is prime time for nips, tucks and other cosmetic fine tuning. Not that anyone here admits it — in the magical world of politics, public officials and talking heads are genetically blessed with hair that never turns gray, baby-smooth foreheads and barely any wrinkles. And by plastic surgery (or Botox, laser treatments, body sculpting, dermal fillers, pick your poison), we’re

President Obama’s recent campaign-style adventures outside of the White House bubble are a chance for the president to shed the confines of his office, relishing the beer, barbecue, and face-to-face conversations with everyday Americans he wistfully describes as too inaccessible as president. But the more frequently “the bear gets loose”, as the president and top staffers jokingly refer to the unscheduled forays away from the White House grounds, the more heartburn the president causes for the Secret Service agents charged with protecting his life. President Obama is a political trailblazer, but some of the precedents he’s setting are highly dubious. At the top of my list would be his habit of relentlessly berating his political opponents at the same time he’s asking for their help. Convinced that the huge recent influx of undocumented women and children from Central America requires an emergency federal response, Obama asked last week for nearly $4 billion in emergency funds from Congress. But even while making this supplemental request, Obama couldn’t resist relentlessly mocking the very House Republicans whose votes he needs. “This should not be hard,” Obama explained dismissively. “Congress
