The desperate, brave faces
of Europe´s secret crisis

We are ignoring a European crisis that is going to change all our lives irreversibly and for ever. It is the huge, tragic surge of African migrants across the Mediterranean. Once inside the borderless European Union, these newcomers can and will settle anywhere. There is no law or power that can stop them. [Snip] But much more serious was the virtual siege of Ceuta (and its nearby twin, Melilla) by migrants, immense numbers of them, crowding up against the 20ft fences which are all that separate this little piece of Spain from Africa. They climbed. They swam round or paddled

They think it’s all over. David Cameron may have looked solemn enough when he proclaimed that the Conservatives still had work to do to win back voters, blah-blah, but then his party chairman Grant Shapps gave the elated game away: the Newark by-election proved that Ukip was “going backwards”. The tide had been turned, the Farage magic had run out--all over, finished, back to electoral business as usual. Well, maybe if you regard leaping into second place from fifth, halving the Conservatives’ majority in a safe seat in spite of a campaign so full-on that it was a virtual military

Bernard Jordan said he served on a destroyer in the Second World War hunting the ‘wolf packs’ of Nazi U-boats attacking Allied shipping convoys. ‘I was once on a mission to recover one of the Enigma machines from a U-boat which we’d forced to the surface by dropping depth charges, and crippling it,’ the 89-year-old Royal Navy veteran told friends. [Snip] Exactly which ship he was serving on at the time was not clear yesterday, but the successful British mission to seize the German code machines and their codebooks has been credited with changing the course of the war.

COLUMBIA, SC—Conservationists took aim Friday at S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley for questioning new carbon dioxide regulations that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says will help in the fight against climate change, a phenomenon that is contributing to weather extremes and rising sea levels. [Snip] After a meeting of state electric cooperatives, Haley said, “We are seeing once again D.C. sending us backwards. We are recruiting international companies every day. One of the things they focus on are utility rates. When you see these mandates on utility companies like this, it’s not only hurting the state, it’s hurting the country.”

Surge in Illegal Migrants

In the first four months of this year so many illegal immigrants crossed the Mediterranean and entered one of the EU member states that the number is already close to the 2013 total and is likely to rise as summer weather brings calmer seas, officials from the European Union’s border agency Frontex told the New York Times. The total so far for 2014 is more than the equivalent period in 2011, the year of the Arab Spring, which eventually saw 140,000 make clandestine crossings into Europe. Officials said the number of people attempting the sea crossing from North Africa to

Madrid Names City Square

Madrid´s city council yesterday approved a proposal to name a square after former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. The local Madrid Diario reports that the council approved the name ‘Plaza de Margaret Thatcher’ for a previously unnamed public space situated in the centre of the city between Goya, Castellana and Marqués de Zurgena streets. The naming of the square was originally proposed in April last year by the city’s ruling conservative People’s Party. The proposal generated outrage from left-wing opposition councillors. Explaining the decision, city councillor Fernando Martínez Vidal told Spanish newspaper ABC: "Madrid is a cosmopolitan and open city. Even

Our country’s finest hour was its fight against Nazism. When we landed at Normandy with our allies and pushed forward against the enemy fire, it was a heroic gamble for victory. The price was 4,413 Allied soldiers killed--around a quarter of them British. [Snip] Barack Obama’s speech at Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial was interrupted by a standing ovation as he acknowledged the veterans around him. In his words, D-Day was a triumph of America’s democratic ideals. As his predecessor Franklin D Roosevelt put it, the US came “not for the lust of conquest. They [fought] to end conquest.”

Stepping on to the Normandy beaches in the past few days, many Second World War veterans have recalled their comrades in arms--those who died 70 years ago in the service of their country, and those who survived the fighting to liberate Europe. [Snip] But quite a few will be thinking of another Churchill--his daughter Mary, who died poignantly last weekend, at the age of 91, just as commemorations were beginning. For Mary was part of the D-Day invasion force, landing on D+20, and seeing active service in Brussels and Hamburg as a Junior Commander in the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS).

Forget about Barack Obama’s ultra-liberal policies — should Americans now be worried about the mental health of the current occupant of the White House? That was the alarming suggestion Fox Business Network viewers heard Tuesday evening. Talking about the bewildering decision to trade five “high risk” Taliban leaders for Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl on Lou Dobbs Tonight, psychologist Dr. Gina Loudon said she has become “very, very concerned” that President Obama has become “irrational, erratic and perhaps not exactly what we might want to deem sane.” [Video and transcript after the jump.] Host Lou Dobbs asked Loudon about the case of U.S.

A new study that tested the willingness of drivers to stop for people depending on their race has shown up some disconcerting conclusions. Portland State University-based Oregon Transportation Research and Education Consortium (OTREC) had six men - three black and three white - of similar age and build and dressed in identical ´neutral´ outfits cross the same street in Portland at separate intervals. The street had a crosswalk that was not governed by traffic lights, leaving the onus to stop with the driver, according to The Huffington Post. Democratic strategist and former Clinton-campaign manager Donna Brazile said this morning that veterans accusing recently returned Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl of desertion are part of a “PR campaign by Republicans.” After fellow panelist Ana Navarro noted that members of Bergdahl’s unit had consistently expressed concerns about the circumstances of his capture, Brazile said it was an effort to “muddy the waters” surrounding the prisoner deal. Quickly criticized for the comment by her fellow panelists on CNN, she said that she’d never impugn the testimony of a veteran, but stood by her comments. “That’s all they do . . . all they do

PARIS- Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl has told people treating him at a U.S. military medical facility in Germany that he was tortured, beaten and held in a cage by his Taliban captors in Afghanistan after he tried to escape, a senior U.S. official said Sunday. The official said it was difficult to verify the accounts Bergdahl has given since his release a week ago. Bergdahl, now 28, was captured in June 2009 after he disappeared from his

Hi, everybody. This is commencement season, a time for graduates and their families to celebrate one of the greatest achievements of a young person’s life. But for many graduates, it also means feeling trapped by a whole lot of student loan debt. And we’ve got to do more to lift that burden. See, in a 21st century economy, the surest pathway into the middle class is some form of higher education. The unemployment rate for workers with a bachelor’s degree is just 3.3 percent — about half what it is for high school graduates. The typical graduate of a four-year college earns $15,000 more per year than someone with just a high school degree.

U.S. fertility is not recovering from the financial crisis — and demographers aren’t sure why. The fertility rate fell to a record low 62.9 births per 1,000 women aged 15-44 in 2013, according to the National Center for Health Statistics. The total number of births, at 3.96 million, inched up by a mere 4,000 from 2012, the first increase since the financial crisis. But the total fertility rate, or TFR, the average number of children a woman would have during her child-bearing years, fell to just 1.86, the lowest rate in 27 years. TFR is considered the best metric of
