Crossing the road is more
dangerous for African Americans:
New study says drivers are less
likely to stop for black pedestrians

Daily Mail [UK], by Joel Christie

Original Article

A new study that tested the willingness of drivers to stop for people depending on their race has shown up some disconcerting conclusions. Portland State University-based Oregon Transportation Research and Education Consortium (OTREC) had six men - three black and three white - of similar age and build and dressed in identical ´neutral´ outfits cross the same street in Portland at separate intervals. The street had a crosswalk that was not governed by traffic lights, leaving the onus to stop with the driver, according to The Huffington Post. Trained observers watched the study out of sight from the traffic and

Comments:
The "researcher" admits she confirmed the results she was looking for, and now seeks CDC funding for further investigation. Not mentioned is the race of the drivers who failed to slow down.

I wonder, is Portland is one of the US cities where passive-aggressive black people intentionally slow their pace to a Steppin Fetchit gait while crossing the street, instead of hurrying a bit in exchange for the courtesy of the driver allowing the pedestrian to pass, as any polite person would?

Pure unadulterated Grade A horse manure. It is far more likely that blacks are putting themselves in vulnerable situations than that drivers are deliberately trying to run them down. The so-called "study" is chock full of holes.

I have to weigh in. I drive in NYC, and to be blunt, blacks of all ages will jay walk in the middle of the block on a busy avenue and walk slowly and bring traffic to a stop. Especially near housing projects. You can come up with your reason why they do this. I´ll keep my opinion to myself

Having lived in a mostly black area for 10 years I would say that jaywalking or rather strolling down the middle of the street is too common. Certain types will practically dare a car to hit them. Of course, now that I live the suburbs there are the joggers who run down the street (but they are not crossing it) when there is a perfectly good sidewalk and some cyclists who ride almost in the dark.

#6, #18 driving in the city affirms both. It´s become ridiculous. The glacial slowness, the defiance of any kind of consideration, the absolute absence of any sense of urgency. I frequently wonder if such insulting public conduct is meant to attract an injury in order to collect on later litigation, or if in fact such conduct is related to the ever-present sense of grievance. Lol. There´s nothing to do but take a long count and drive on. Some general observations are nonetheless true, despite Justice Holmes´s apothegm.

I certainly don´t consider myself to be a racist, but here in the Mpls area, if there is going to be a pedestrian with an attitude-- jaywalking, crossing on a red light, etc., at least 7 times out of 10 it will be a black person. It´s like they are power-tripping or feel that they are owed special treatment. Kind of like in a movie theater -- if people in the audience talk back to the screen - are they white or black....here, it´s probably 95% of those who do this are black. Is it cultural or poor upbringing or what?

#23 "The glacial slowness, the defiance of any kind of consideration, the absolute absence of any sense of urgency." you mention comes as a result of not ever having to work for anything. Never having a schedule. The only time that slowness changes is when some is shooting at them or the police are chasing them. Good grief another stupid study from some academic fool like the one about eating chicken on the bone makes children violent.

I agree-nonsense! Here the drivers rarely stop for anyone. But at heavily used crosswalks, like one I use fairly often, there is no distinction based on race. Most drivers stop, but some just keep going. The other day, I noticed a black driver kept going when I was in the crosswalk.

I heard about this Buddhist Monk talking about being non violent and avoiding trouble who was once asked what he would do if he walked around a corner and found himself faced with thugs who wanted beat him up and steal his money and cell phone. He answered that he just wouldn´t go around that corner! There is some truth in that answer. If one finds himself in a situation where you have to stop and wait for a shambling person to finish his slow walk across the street in front of your car, one shouldn´t be on that street to begin with!

Apologies for a second post.

With all of the ads on TV with attorneys getting former clients to say they won huge claims, part of the problem is those that dare you to hit them because they will sue. It is so bad they are calling the attorney before an ambulance arrives.

Someone said they had a knee injury and delayed surgery because their attorney advised them to settle before surgery. He gets his cut plus expenses, you get whatever is left over-if anything.

it is not just pedestrians that exude that sense of entitlement. Make note of who stops their car and waits at the entrance of a grocery store while a passenger goes in for something, and often it´s the driver.

there is an observable tendency to simply walk out into traffic without so much as a thought of looking both ways, expecting drivers to yield to their unexpected presence.
You may see the same behavior at the WalMart of your choice -- paying not the slightest attention to anyone else or anything else that may be going on, and immediately furious that there might be others present.
It is not completely a racial matter but the tendency is notable.

Not counting instances when he quoted a letter from a citizen or cited dialogue from a movie, President Barack Obama used the first person singular--including the pronouns "I" and "me" and the adjective "my"--199 times in a speech he delivered Thursday vowing to use unilateral executive action to achieve his policy goals that Congress would not enact through the normal, constitutional legislative process. “It is lonely, me just doing stuff,” Obama said at the speech in Austin, Texas, according to the official transcript and video posted on the White House website. “I’m just telling the truth now,” Obama told the

It’s true what they say about Michelle Obama. She has amazing arms. I saw this up close when she unfurled her bare right limb in front of me Thursday night, while the two of us were doing tapas at the jumping Barcelona on 14th Street NW. Clearly the first lady works out, clearly she moisturizes and clearly L’Oréal should hire her as its pitchwoman after she leaves 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. “Ma’am, you rock,” I wanted to tell her, even though I was seated a table away from her party of eight, which included White House chef Sam Kass, and was

In his weekly radio/YouTube address, President Obama derided House Republicans’ planned lawsuit against him, warning that GOP lawmakers will spend taxpayer dollars on a frivolous legal challenge. “It’s a political stunt that’s going to waste months of America’s time. And by the way, they’re going to pay for it using your hard-earned tax dollars,” Obama said. (Video) House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, has orchestrated the beginnings of a lawsuit against the president over his use of executive authority. As the White House and the GOP-controlled House have failed to compromise on a slew of issues during Obama’s tenure, the president has

Angry Democrats in Nebraska said the Obama Outhouse float in the 4th of July parade may have been racist. So now Eric Holder is looking into it. Omaha.com reported: The U.S. Department of Justice has joined the discussions over a controversial float in the Norfolk Independence Day parade. The department sent a member of its Community Relations Service team, which gets involved in discrimination disputes, to a Thursday meeting about the issue. Also at the meeting were the NAACP, the Norfolk mayor and The Independent Order of Odd Fellows. The Odd Fellows organized the parade. One of the floats included a zombie-like mannequin standing near

Friday on "Democracy Now," Rep. Luis Gutiérrez (D-IL) attacked his "shameful" Republican colleagues for wanting to change the 2008 child trafficking law so that the children from from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador current streaming across the border in hopes of evading deportation will be treated the same as those from Mexico before approving the $3.7 billion in emergency funding the president has requested. The Illinois Democrat said, "I think it is shameful that in the Congress of the U.S. we see members of Congress engendering and creating fear of children. We should be protecting children, not creating fear of them." Yesterday,

The “ugly American” has gotten a lot uglier over the past few weeks, from the streets of California to the halls of Congress and state houses around the country. A growing number of our fellow Americans have taken on grotesque features, in looks and sounds, in reaction to the thousands of children from Central America who have crossed our borders as they flee poverty and violence in hope for something better. Sadly, the arrival of these youngsters has been greeted by flag-waving, sign-carrying, Bible-thumping and Constitution-quoting citizens demanding that they not be received here and that they be returned immediately to their

BOSTON — Comedian Bill Cosby and his wife Camille are supporting protesters marching across Massachusetts in opposition to Kinder Morgan’s proposed natural gas pipeline. The couple, who own hundreds of acres of protected land in Shelburne Falls, about 100 miles west of Boston, have been opposed to the pipeline since the company notified them last winter of plans to survey their land. Through a spokesman, the couple said it was “astounding” that New England’s six governors support the proposal, which they said shows “disrespect for humans, flora and fauna.” Supporters of the $3.75 billion Northeast Pipeline Extension Project say it will provide
