Chicago declines to bid for
Democratic convention: Inside story

Chicago Sun Times, by Lynn Sweet

WASHINGTON--Mayor Rahm Emanuel finally slammed--really shut for good-- the door on bidding for either of the 2016 political conventions, with the Democratic National Committee on Saturday announcing that only six cities submitted bids--with Chicago not on list. The cities in the running are Birmingham, Cleveland, Columbus, Philadelphia, Phoenix and New York, with a Brooklyn site. Background: Last Feb. 26, I reported that Chicago was not going to bid for either the Democratic or Republican convention unless the parties agreed to hold the events in the same city, which was not going to happen for 2016. On April 22, I reported that

DARBANDIKHAN, Iraq — As Sunni rebels advanced across Iraq in recent weeks, hundreds of thousands of Iraqis were driven from their homes. For many, it was not the first time. There have been very few prolonged periods of peace in Iraq over the last several decades, and for civilians seemingly perpetual flight. More than a million Iraqis have been displaced this year, half within the last couple of weeks, the United Nations says. For Akheel Ahmed, a Sunni Arab who fled his home in the central Iraq town of Balad, fear and uncertainty were accompanied by familiarity. He arrived in this mountain

BETHESDA, Md. -- Tiger Woods never felt so good after playing so badly. Taking two shots to escape a plugged lie in a bunker put him a hole. Four straight bogeys on the back nine Friday in the Quicken Loans National buried his chances of making it to the weekend. Over two rounds at Congressional, he missed 16 greens and managed to save par only three times. Woods was back -- just not for very long. Playing for the first time in more than three months because of back surgery, he had a 4-over 75 on Friday and missed the

FT. MEADE, MD-After seven years in custody at Guantanamo Bay, a former top Al Qaeda commander and confidant of Osama bin Laden was arraigned Wednesday by U.S. military authorities there, pushing his case into the troubled military tribunal system. A group of U.S. diplomats arrived in Libya three years ago to a memorable reception: a throng of cheering men and women who pressed in on the startled group "just to touch us and thank us," recalled Susan Rice, President Obama´s national security advisor. The Libyans were emotional because the U.S. and its allies had toppled leader Moammar Kadafi in a military campaign that averted a feared slaughter of Kadafi´s foes. Obama administration officials called the international effort, accomplished with no Western casualties, a "model intervention." But in three years Libya has turned into the kind of place U.S. officials

David Cameron compared himself to Margaret Thatcher on Friday and said he was fighting similar “battles” with the European Union. Mr Cameron evoked the memory of Baroness Thatcher’s fights with Brussels during the Eighties and said he had gone further than her by securing an EU budget cut last year. Despite those claims, he was mocked in Europe and compared to Rambo, Wayne Rooney and Don Quixote over his failure to stop the nomination of Jean-Claude Juncker. Mr Cameron said the EU was more difficult to reform than it was in Lady Thatcher’s time because a series of treaties have removed national vetoes.

High court strikes Massachusetts

The Supreme Court on Thursday unanimously struck down a Massachusetts law that restricted speech outside abortion facilities, a decision that abortion-rights advocates decried as a threat to patient safety at clinics nationwide. The court said the state law violated the First Amendment because its “buffer zone” limited speech too broadly, covering 35 feet from the doorway of facilities and including public areas like sidewalks. Although other buffer zones typically are smaller, specifying distances such as 8 feet or 15 feet from clinics, the advocates said the court’s decision puts them in jeopardy. “If you were a betting man, you would bet

Facebook’s News Feed—the main list of status updates, messages, and photos you see when you open Facebook on your computer or phone—is not a perfect mirror of the world. But few users expect that Facebook would change their News Feed in order to manipulate their emotional state. We now know that’s exactly what happened two years ago. For one week in January 2012, data scientists skewed what almost 700,000 Facebook users saw when they logged into its service. Some people were shown content with a preponderance of happy and positive words; some were shown content analyzed as sadder than average.

Edward Klein’s book about the animosity between the Clintons and Obamas, “Blood Feud” (Regnery Publishing), rocketed up the best-seller charts since it was featured in The Post last Sunday. Here, in another exclusive excerpt, Klein describes how Bill’s health is a preoccupation of the Clintons. A pair of black, armor-plated SUVs swung into a suburban cul-de-sac and crunched to a stop in the driveway of the Clintons’ home in Chappaqua, New York. A wall of burly Secret Service agents jumped out and surrounded the man who emerged from the lead vehicle. It was mid-summer 2013, and Bill Clinton looked shrunken and weary.

Dear Secretary Clinton, Please consider this in the nature of a friendly intervention. You have a money problem. It’s time to deal with it before it gets worse. Actually, you have two money problems. The first is how you talk about it. The second is how you collect it — or, to be more precise, the fact that you’re still frenetically collecting it. Let me be clear at the outset: The issue isn’t that you’re rich, or even that you and your husband became rich after leaving office. What transpired in the Mississippi Senate run-off is a red line for many conservatives across the country, because the Republican Party establishment essentially took a civil war and escalated it to a war for independence. It’s one thing to oppose your base in a primary. It’s entirely another to despicably play the race card against your base, and bolster the legitimacy of the propaganda of our race-baiting opponents on the Left. But that’s exactly what the Kamikaze pilots running the GOP did. As a result, Chris McDaniel won Republican voters handily on Tuesday, but still lost the run-off statewide thanks
