Everyday Hands Keep
Belmont Park on Track

Wall Street Journal, by Yoni Bashan

Sam Grossman, the official bugler at Belmont Park, Aqueduct Racetrack and Saratoga Race Course, plays the "Call to the Post" before each race. He also takes requests.(Snip)His job, he said, is one of the few aside from horses and jockeys that entertain the crowds one-on-one. Many others, such as Harry Rice, work behind the scenes.Mr. Rice, 56 years old, is the valet (sounds like "mallet") who tends to the jockeys´ equipment, including boots, saddles and helmets. He works in the Jockeys Room, in the warren of spaces underneath the Belmont grandstand. It is where riders gather before post time and after

Comments:
The "back" of horseracing is almost as interesting as the "front´. Having grown up, and living now, within close proximity to the beautiful Santa Anita Park race track (which opened in 1934), we have always been racing fans.

At Belmont Park on Thursday - - 1,978 lost souls showed up for the races - - at a track which can comfortably hold 50,000 and in which more than 100,000 patrons can be squeezed in.

That meagre "crowd" - - only two days before the track´s biggest day - - is symptomatic of how today´s training and management methods are killing the sport.

Thoroughbred horses used to be professional athletes - - but now they´re clueless amateurs. And it isn´t the fault of the horses.

Why go to the track when you can make your bets right in the hood.

Clinton navigates foreign

It is a near-perfect storm that has come together as Hillary Rodham Clinton tours the country promoting her new book and preparing for a possible presidential campaign in 2016. At a time when she is drawing attention to her record as secretary of state, the Middle East has become dangerously chaotic and President Obama’s approval ratings are sliding. That has left Clinton in a difficult position of trying to claim success when she was in office while shielding herself, carefully, from real or perceived weaknesses in the administration’s handling of crises in Syria, Iraq, Libya and other trouble spots. Clinton has two

The federal government refuses to let one of the most controversial Internet bills ever conceived die. CISPA, as it was known when it was introduced in 2011, made a temporary resurgence last year only to meet the same opposition that had blocked its passage two years before. But as Vice has discovered, the bill is back under consideration by the U.S. Senate under a slightly altered name. The Cybersecurity Information Sharing Act of 2014 “incentivizes the sharing of cybersecurity threat information between the private sector and the government and among private sector entities,” according to a press release published on

With the curtain soon to go up on select committee hearings on Benghazi, a key question remains unanswered: what on earth were we doing there? What policies were being pursued in that violent outpost of the Libyan revolution? The White House would rather not say. (SnipLast month, Daily Beast national security correspondent Eli Lake reported that House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rogers had “warned his colleagues about the upcoming select committee to investigate Benghazi.” In interviews Rogers “downplayed” the testimony CIA contractors gave in closed session, Lake noted, and has said he did not believe the CIA had stonewalled his

She complains that jobs are still hard to find and the local schools are subpar. ´It´s time for somebody new,´ she said, ´like Hillary.´ "That would be Hillary Clinton, who if she wins the presidential nomination in 2016 will be the oldest Democrat ever to do so. Yesterday, it was announced the Obama administration had moved on Sunday to arrest a Benghazi al-Qaeda leader Ahmed Abu Khattala. Many people, including Fox’s James Rosen pointed particular questions to the State Dept. about “why now”? As unbelievable as this might sound, the most likely answer has little to do with what’s currently being pondered as a motive for this administration, “squirrel”. The reality is within the Bergdahl deal, and the GITMO-5 to Qatar, there is a far more likely reason.Ahmed Abu Khattala is directly connected to the covert transfer of U.S. arms from Qatar to Libya in the initial 2011

The latest Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll brings more bad news for President Obama as his approval rating slides to 41%, matching his previous low. Meanwhile a full 54% of U.S. adults disapprove of the job he´s doing as President. But there are two groups of people who continue to earn high marks from the public. In fact, only two institutions in American life enjoy majority support. The latest Journal/NBC survey finds that 69% of Americans have a great deal or quite a bit of confidence in the military, and 53% express the same level of trust in the high-technology industry.

WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Patent Office ruled Wednesday that the Washington Redskins nickname is "disparaging of Native Americans" and that the team´s federal trademarks for the name must be canceled. The 2-1 ruling comes after a campaign to change the name has gained momentum over the past year. The team doesn´t immediately lose trademark protection and is allowed to retain it during an appeal. Redskins owner Daniel Snyder has refused to change the team´s name, citing tradition, but there has been growing pressure including statements in recent months from President Barack Obama, lawmakers of both parties and civil rights groups.

In what some see as the first step to forcing the Washington Redskins football team to change their name, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on Wednesday cancelled six federal trademarks of the team name because it´s “disparaging” to Native Americans. “Petitioners have shown by a preponderance of the evidence that a substantial composite of Native Americans found the term REDSKINS to be disparaging,” said the decision. Fans, however, won’t see any immediate change — even if Daniel Snyder’s team eventually loses in court. That’s because all the order will do is eliminate the trademark the team has on merchandise. The Redskins are expected to appeal.

Hillary Clinton — the woman assumed to be the next Democratic Party presidential nominee and quite possibly the next president — is evidently a big snooze. According to Mediate, her interviews to promote her book on CNN and Fox had underwhelming numbers. In the case of Greta Van Susteren’s show, she sent people fleeing midway. More importantly, her book itself is a sales disappointment and, I would wager, even more disappointing if you could ascertain how many who did buy it read actually past page 15. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was in single digits. No, I haven’t read it

Hillary Clinton´s minions are hard at work assembling a political machine and fine tuning it for another go at the White House. Mrs. Clinton is doing her part preparing for a run as well, churning out a bland memoir about the "hard choices" she faced as secretary of state and coyly positioning herself (again) as the inevitable nominee of the party. But after the troubled beginning to her book tour, we´re beginning to see the reasons why Hillary may eventually decide to pull the plug on a 2016 presidential run. Here are five: 1) She´s just not that good at campaigning. If the last two gaffe-prone weeks have reminded us of anything about Hillary,
