Mountain View, Calif. — Just down the road from Google’s main campus here, engineers for the company are accelerating what has become the newest arms race in modern technology: They are making it far more difficult — and far more expensive — for the National Security Agency and the intelligence arms of other governments around the world to pierce their systems. Google´s entire business model is based on observing a person´s every activity online, and bundling and selling the mined data to advertisers and other interested parties (to include the government). Cute that they´d pretend to be guardians of privacy, but make no mistake, their database is for sale to any and all; their objection is only to their spying activities being bypassed.

A "positive" article in NYT about Google: what could be wrong here? There certainly couldn´t be any common interest. /s

The fundamental paradox is this: how can a network or site be made "accessable" to the NSA (which is often a requirement), while at the same time "more difficult to pierce" by foreign agencies and hackers?

A "back door" - installed for whatever purpose - is still a back door. If persons or agencies can access it for legitimate purposes (like system maintenance or national security), so can other persons or agencies with appropriate knowledge access it for nefarious purposes.

(In addition, the FCC imposes tight restrictions on any encryption used on media it controls - which is just about everything. They insist on the ability of government to be able to monitor the content. This is another reason, in addition to the First Amendment, why the FCC should have absolutely no say over content.)

That is why these systems - hardware and software - must be designed from the ground up without any back doors whatsoever. I can hear the howls from the IT, software, and even a few hardware types, and am not holding my breath.

"And that´s the way it is": just be aware of it and protect yourself accordingly.

The South Dakota Republican Party state convention passed a resolution calling for the impeachment of President Barack Obama Saturday. The resolution says Obama has "violated his oath of office in numerous ways." It specifically cites the release of five Taliban combatants in a trade for captive U.S. soldier Bowe Bergdahl, Obama´s statement that people could keep insurance companies, and recent EPA regulations on power plants. "Therefore, be it resolved that the South Dakota Republican Party calls on our U.S. Representatives to initiate impeachment proceedings against the president of the United States," the resolution reads. As the case that resulted in the arrest of a Louisiana mother of two was transferred from one section to another at the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, details of the actual suspect were replaced with information about the woman who ended up being wrongfully arrested twice, according to investigative notes from the Public Defender’s Office. Ashley Nicole Chiasson, 28, spent a total of five weeks in Clay County jail after she was arrested for grand theft in January and again four months later for writing bad checks. She was the wrong Ashley Chiasson on both occasions. Clay County Sheriff Rick

The fate of a 16-year-old Connecticut girl at the center of a major medical custody dispute is in the hands of a Massachusetts judge, now that Bay State children´s advocates have conceded Justina Pelletier should be returned to her family. In a controversial move, Pelletier was placed in the custody of the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families more than a year ago, after two reputable Boston hospitals sparred in their diagnosis of the girl. When the girl´s parents disagreed with a psychiatric diagnosis given by Boston Children´s Hospital, the couple said they wanted their daughter returned to her original

A federal judge has ordered the government to stop destroying National Security Agency surveillance records that could be used to challenge the legality of its spying programs in court. U.S. District Court Judge Jeffrey White’s ruling came at the request of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, which is in the midst of a case challenging NSA’s ability to surveil foreign citizen’s U.S.-based email and social media accounts. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “loathes” Barack Obama, and his hostile attitude to the US president constitutes a danger to Israel’s well-being, the head of the Israeli opposition charged on Friday night, in a highly unusual acknowledgement of the long-rumored strained personal ties between the two leaders. In a bitter verbal assault on the prime minister, Labor party chairman Isaac Herzog slammed Netanyahu for failing to listen to the international community, failing to present peace proposals of his own for an accord with the Palestinians, and failing to work properly with Obama. Early exposure to air pollution causes harmful changes in the brain seen in autism and schizophrenia, research has shown. The findings in mice follow previous research linking traffic pollution and higher rates of autism in children. As in humans, it was mostly male mice that were affected. Besides suffering physical damage to their brains, they performed poorly in tests of short-term memory, learning ability and impulsivity. In a series of experiments, scientists exposed mice to levels of air pollution typically found in medium-sized cities during the first two weeks after birth. Mice examined 24 hours after their last exposure displayed

Data brokers that quietly gather billions of pieces of data on Americans should be required to operate more openly, so that those categorized as “financially challenged” or possibly suffering from serious medical conditions have the ability to check and challenge those characterizations, a federal report said Tuesday. The data broker industry, which is lightly regulated, develops profiles of hundreds of millions of people using online and offline sources, such as magazine subscriptions, visits to Web sites, posting on social networking services and purchase histories, the Federal Trade Commission reported. The information sold to marketers can include race, income and homeownership.

A brand new poll out of Louisiana shows that likely voters aren´t impressed with their senior Senator: [Snip] Landrieu is attracting just 36 percent of the vote, with three Republican challengers splitting 46 percent of the vote -- a ten-point disadvantage for the incumbent. Facebook’s News Feed—the main list of status updates, messages, and photos you see when you open Facebook on your computer or phone—is not a perfect mirror of the world. But few users expect that Facebook would change their News Feed in order to manipulate their emotional state. We now know that’s exactly what happened two years ago. For one week in January 2012, data scientists skewed what almost 700,000 Facebook users saw when they logged into its service. Some people were shown content with a preponderance of happy and positive words; some were shown content analyzed as sadder than average.

Edward Klein’s book about the animosity between the Clintons and Obamas, “Blood Feud” (Regnery Publishing), rocketed up the best-seller charts since it was featured in The Post last Sunday. Here, in another exclusive excerpt, Klein describes how Bill’s health is a preoccupation of the Clintons. A pair of black, armor-plated SUVs swung into a suburban cul-de-sac and crunched to a stop in the driveway of the Clintons’ home in Chappaqua, New York. A wall of burly Secret Service agents jumped out and surrounded the man who emerged from the lead vehicle. It was mid-summer 2013, and Bill Clinton looked shrunken and weary.

No. Did anything change? No. The Tea Party is not being done in by Democrats; it is being done in by the party of big business, crony capitalism, big money from insider Wall Street and big banks, the Chamber of Commerce and the corporate lobbying wing of the Tea Party's real nemesis:

Dear Secretary Clinton, Please consider this in the nature of a friendly intervention. You have a money problem. It’s time to deal with it before it gets worse. Actually, you have two money problems. The first is how you talk about it. The second is how you collect it — or, to be more precise, the fact that you’re still frenetically collecting it. Let me be clear at the outset: The issue isn’t that you’re rich, or even that you and your husband became rich after leaving office. What transpired in the Mississippi Senate run-off is a red line for many conservatives across the country, because the Republican Party establishment essentially took a civil war and escalated it to a war for independence. It’s one thing to oppose your base in a primary. It’s entirely another to despicably play the race card against your base, and bolster the legitimacy of the propaganda of our race-baiting opponents on the Left. But that’s exactly what the Kamikaze pilots running the GOP did. As a result, Chris McDaniel won Republican voters handily on Tuesday, but still lost the run-off statewide thanks

Hillary Clinton is just too unlikable (remember that Barack Obama called her “likable enough” in one of the most memorable back handed compliments of recent political memory), and too transparently greedy, self-serving, and out of touch. Not to mention the appalling foreign affairs crises the United States faces in the wake of her term as Secretary of State. Her brand is tarnished.
