Obama: We need to make
college more affordable

Investor´s Business Daily, by Andrew Malcolm

Hi, everybody. This is commencement season, a time for graduates and their families to celebrate one of the greatest achievements of a young person’s life. But for many graduates, it also means feeling trapped by a whole lot of student loan debt. And we’ve got to do more to lift that burden. See, in a 21st century economy, the surest pathway into the middle class is some form of higher education. The unemployment rate for workers with a bachelor’s degree is just 3.3 percent — about half what it is for high school graduates. The typical graduate of a four-year college earns $15,000 more per year than someone with just a high school degree.

Easy solution, get the government out of the student loan operation, cut back on government regulations and let the market forces work. The only reason for the high cost is the government´s willingness to pay for it via guaranteed student loans. The feds have distorted the market place for higher education.

Without having read the article - let me guess: Nothing about making colleges back off their ridiculously exorbitant tuitions and fees. "Affordable" means taking money from taxpayers, gift wrapping it and presenting it to students and colleges (the better to purchase votes and loyalties)to squander as needed. Did I get that right?

The key is not to make something worthless in the process.

One step is to get the government out of the process as much as possible.

Return student loans to the private sector and let them be on the hook for default. Have colleges have a piece of the default judgments so that they have skin in the game too.

Currently the government subsidies work to give colleges the means and excuses to raise costs.

More government regulations add to the cost as colleges as more staff to comply as opposed to actually teaching students.

Further without subsidy, many colleges might rethink the number and content of majors.

Obama was simply attempting to make political points with younger people, as any college student who has taken out student loans knows a few months after finishing college, when the loan repayment schedule arrives, that there is no free lunch.

We will have to wait and see what Obama says he intends to do about the student loan situation later in the week.

If the federal government would wash its hands of all things education...students--at all levels--would be learning substantially more for substantially less money. Then, if it would wash its hands of its vice-grip hold on private sector business....those coming out of college would actually be able to find a job and support themselves.

All my liberal friends on Facebook are posting about how the big bad GOP in Congress is refusing a bill that would make student loan interest less than 1%. What could go wrong? Anyone remember what happened to the price of housing when interest rates declined? Yep, lower mortgage interest rates caused housing prices to go way up. I wonder what would happen to the cost of attending college if the interest rates on loans was lowered to less than 1 percent? Anyone care to guess? Colleges could keep prices stead or they could raise the costs because the interest rate is less then 1 percent. I know what would happen, but liberals can´t figure it out. Of course the true liberal goal is loan forgiveness.

We´re fast approaching a situation in which only students in the hard sciences (pre-med, for instance) actually need a campus with laboratory facilities. Everything else can be done online, for a small fraction of what a college education costs today. Universities have priced themselves out of the education marketplace. In fifty years four-fifths of them will be gone.

Colleges with millionaire presidents? Why are so many drawing down millions a year? An executive at one college makes almost six million every year! At another the salaries are almost three million! Then another $2.6, $2.3, but studies show that expenditures per students on scholarships went from around $1,400 to around $900 and student debt reached to around close to $30,000. Go after those high salaries of executives.

I am making a six figure income on a high school education, not because of entitlements or connections but because I know the information technology field inside and out and am not afraid to work hard. My two college graduate kids are both unemployed at the moment. Current college curriculum is heavily laden with liberal propaganda and not nearly enough useful knowledge or job skills.

The answer to student debt is not on the financing end it is on the cost side. Get football, hoops and other intercollegiate sports out of the schools. They are huge money drains and are financed by students, whether they participate or not. Get rid of the expensive, useless tenured professors. Eliminate African Studies, Women´s Studies, Basket Weaving and all of the other substitutions for real education. Get the government out of the whole process. Stop free-ride programs for under-qualified students and stop dumbing down the subject matter so they can "graduate."

While they´re at it, why don´t they pass a law to raise everyone´s IQs by 20 points? Or, why not 30?

The problem with leftists is that they are incapable of coming to terms with the reality of the human condition. Lots of people are incapable of grasping higher-level ´academic´ thought. Going to college will not change that. I am not saying that these people are inferior. I have met many who have no college education, yet can fix things, build things, and work much more efficiently at many tasks than I, but they are unsuited for college. Colleges will have to be greatly watered down for these people to attend - a waste of money and human potential.

If they really wanted to get people trained and motivated in productive jobs, they would lower the cost of business and provide incentives for low-wage apprenticeship programs.

Of course no one ever addresses WHY attending college is so ridiculously expensive. Could it be overpaid professors? Gold plated diamond encrusted benefits programs? What every liberal avoids acknowledging is that most universities are money making profit driven enterprises.

I read once that Harvard´s endowment is so huge that they could literally provide free college for the next 100 years.

I cannot believe 0bama could be this dumb; first thing as president, he makes the government responsible for student loans. Anyone can get them, and everyone did; the colleges saw this flush of cash, and guess what, the colleges raised their prices accordingly. Remember, student loans are now over a Trillion Dollars; more than people owe on credit cards. And also remember, many of the degrees these greedy kids got are in subjects that will never give them gainful employment.

President Obama's weekly remarks
Hi, everybody. This week, I spent some time in Colorado and Texas, talking with people about what’s going on in their lives. One was Elizabeth Cooper, a college junior this fall. She wrote to tell me something I hear often: how hard it is for middle-class families like hers to afford college. And she shared something I know many of you feel when you wonder what’s going on in Washington. She said she feels “not significant enough to be addressed, not poor enough for people to worry [about], and not rich enough to be cared about.” I ran for President to fight for Americans just like Elizabeth — people who work hard, do everything right,

With Bill on the skids and his wife’s future prospects on the line, it was necessary for the pubic to see the president being punished, said Weekly Standard online editor Daniel Halper in his new book, “Clinton, Inc.: The Audacious Rebuilding of a Political Machine.” “They understood that
