Bedford Boys´ D-Day loss still
casts shadow in Virginia town

CBS News, by Staff

They grew up together, and as America went to war, so did they. Thirty-five men from the small southern town of Bedford, Virginia, were in the same company, including two of Lucille Boggess´ brothers, reports CBS News´ Jan Crawford. "My parents and most all of us went to see them off," Boggess said. "We were just kind of saying goodbye but, you know, ´We´ll see you soon.´ And it wasn´t like they weren´t coming back." Yet on June 6, 1944, these boys from Bedford, Virginia, with 150,000 other young men, boarded landing craft for the beaches of France for the D-Day

Planning a trip this summer to Bedford - one of my MUST SEEs - welcomed 78 NC WWII vets home yesterday evening in Raleigh that went up to visit through Triangle Flight of Honor - 3 huge buses pulled into Dorton arena, led by police motorcycles and the Raleigh Patriot Guard riders - so heart warming to see all those heroes exiting the buses to cheers and flags waving!! Thank you, vets!

FTA:We were getting ready to go to church on Sunday, and the sherriff brought the first telegram. The second telegram was delivered by a cab driver

I´ve heard that just the sight of someone delivering a Telegram struck terrible fear in many people. It was usually bad news. May they always be remembered.

Let US always remember the heroes and not the traitors.

When I asked someone about D Day and having to kill someone, he said they were just boys and did what they had to do. Rest in peace BP.

Is the sun about to set on Charlie Rangel? Well, the voters get the last word — and a respectable poll shows the 84-year-old, 22-term institution with a healthy and apparently widening lead going into New York’s 13th congressional district primary election on Tuesday. So, it would seem not. What a pity. Because if there was ever a fellow who embodies the dysfunctionalities of Washington, Congress and contemporary elective politics, he is Rep. Charles Bernard Rangel of Harlem — the only chairman of the tax-writing House Ways & Means Committee ever to be pressured from that post for failure to pay his own

U.S. gold medal-winning goalkeeper Hope Solo was arrested early Saturday morning on investigation of two counts of domestic violence assault, police told the Seattle Times. Solo, 32, is being held without bail at the SCORE misdemeanor jail in South King County. Solo allegedly got into an argument with relatives at a family party at the home she shares with her husband, former NFL player Jerramy Stevens, in Kirkland, Washington. At some point during the altercation, according to police, Solo physically struck her sister and 17-year-old nephew. "There were visible injuries on them," Kirkland police lieutenant Mike Murray told the

LOS OLIVOS, Calif. -- From outside the gates of Neverland Ranch, it appears as if Michael Jackson´s former home and fantasyland has been frozen in time. The backyard circus is long gone, but heartfelt notes placed by saddened fans at the property´s entrance remain intact five years after Jackson´s death. And visitors are still making the pilgrimage. "I figured it would just be a closed gate, but I still wanted to see it for myself," said James Chen of Seattle, a fan who stopped outside Neverland during a recent road trip with his father. While many Jackson ventures are thriving

Zero evidence of a Walker "criminal scheme"
Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel [WI], by Christian Schneider    Original Article

Sometimes, the court of public opinion overrules a state’s actual courts. And in Scott Walker’s case, there is little chance for appeal. On Thursday morning, hundreds of pages of documents relating to the “John Doe II” investigation of Gov. Scott Walker’s 2012 recall campaign were ordered released. These documents comprised a number of legal filings by both prosecutors and defendants. But some media and liberal groups picked up on one specific 2013 charge by prosecutors that alleged Walker had been part of a “criminal scheme” to circumvent campaign finance laws. Immediately, national news outlets and liberal activists ran with the

President Barack Obama and wife Michelle have never been your typical working stiffs. With four Ivy League degrees between them, they’ve enjoyed high incomes and strong job security. But before and during college, they each worked minimum-wage jobs. And there was a time when they felt the same kind of financial aches and marriage strains that today’s dual-income families know all too well. As a young married couple in Chicago, they were mired in student debt, juggling multiple jobs and two kids, and bickering over who did what housework. “I wouldn’t fold,” remembers the president. “I didn’t separate, and Michelle’s

If I close my eyes, I can remember the first apartment where I lived with my family in Newark, N.J., in the late 1930s. The rooms were lined up like train cars—you had to go through one to get to another—and there wasn´t any heat or hot water. Heat came from the kitchen stove that ran all day on coal, and if you needed hot water for a bath or to wash, a huge kettle was put up. Fortunately, when I was 6, my family moved to Stephen Crane Village, Newark´s first low-income housing project. I thought we were rich. We

Democrats are giddy over the unsealing of “secret” documents that charge Scott Walker’s recall campaign with illegal coordination with outside conservative groups. To name just a few: USA Today: “Prosecutors: Wis. Gov. Scott Walker in criminal scheme.” Associated Press: “Prosecutors: Gov. Walker part of criminal scheme.” Washington Post: “How the State of Wisconsin alleges Scott Walker aides violated the law, in 1 chart.” If you didn’t know better, you might think this is a big story, highly damaging to one of America’s most successful governors. In fact, the current frenzy merely demonstrates the laziness and bias of reporters who don’t understand

Steve Scalise is known for giving his friends a little bit extra. In Louisiana, it’s called lagniappe. Anytime anyone did a favor for the Louisiana Republican — whether they made a call for him, or spoke up on behalf of a bill he favored — they would find themselves on the receiving end of lagniappe (LAN-yap), or a small unexpected gift. Sometimes it was a praline — Scalise has a basket of them sitting, wrapped in plastic, on a coffee table next to the couch in his office in the Rayburn House Office Building. Other times it was a personalized note,

Looking too good could literally become a crime under newly proposed federal legislation, which would give the Federal Trade Commission power to regulate Photoshop image editing software use in advertising and other media. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen along with Democrats Lois Capps of California and Theodore Deutch of Florida. I have been listening all week to TV pundits lamenting that Lois Lerner’s hard drive has been destroyed, and therefore her e-mails are lost. This is simply not the case. I never cease to be amazed at the lack of understanding of how the e-mail system works. When you write an e-mail, it goes to your server to be sent to the person you e-mailed. Your server keeps a copy of that e-mail, and of all your e-mails – sent and received. When you create all the folders in your e-mail program that you use to save e-mails in...these are also

The Obama administration’s claim to have been surprised by the wave of children flooding over out borders may turn out to be another political lie of the year. Sundance of Conservative Treehouse noticed a very peculiar advertisement: On January 29th of this year, the federal government posted an advertisement seeking bids for a vendor contract to handle “Unaccompanied Alien Children“. Not just any contract mind you, but a very specific contract – for a very specific number of unaccompanied minors: 65,000. • Why would DHS and ICE be claiming “surprise” by the current influx of unaccompanied minors on the border

Mitt Romney, seen as too stiff and robotic to win over enough voters to claim the presidency in 2012, is undergoing his latest reboot, trying to become the Republican Party´s elder statesman in an Image overhaul different from his predecessors who lost their bids for the White House.
