For the second time in two years, Governor Bobby Jindal has vetoed a bill that would have legalized surrogacy contracts in Louisiana. “All Louisianians are at liberty today to engage in informal agreements regarding surrogacy - this is simply a question of whether we ought to codify and regulate such agreements,” the governor said in his May 30 veto letter. “My heart goes out to those who face the tragedies of miscarriage and infertility. The inability to conceive or bear children is a deep wound in our society, unnoticed by most, and suffered by too many,” Jindal wrote

Yesterday, a federal judge in Oklahoma granted a temporary health care mandate injunction to approximately 200 Catholic employers. According to the Preliminary Injunction, the employers do not have to provide coverage for contraceptives, including those that cause abortions, and are exempt from all fines and penalties. In March, the Catholic Benefits Association (CBA) filed a lawsuit stating the Affordable Care Act violated its stance against contraceptives. U.S. District Judge David Russell said, in regards to his decision, "The harm posed to these plaintiffs absent relief is quite tangible-they will either face severe monetary penalties or be required to violate their

The Meaning of Treason

The report on Fox News that Sergeant Bergdahl at one point during his captivity declared himself a “mujahid,” or warrior for Islam, and may even have been allowed to carry a weapon puts at a premium an understanding of treason. Sergeant Bergdahl hasn’t been accused of treason and would be considered innocent until proven otherwise. The burden is always and only on the accusers. But all the more reason to understand what treason is and why it is so special under American law. Treason is the only crime the Constitution pre-empts Congress from defining. It’s also the only crime to

In an act of unmitigated bipartisanship, all Republicans and all Democrats in the U.S. Senate joined together on Tuesday evening to unanimously approve a resolution demanding the “immediate and unconditional release” of Meriam Ibrahim and her two children from the Sudanese prison where they are being held because Meriam refuses to renounce her Christian faith. Ibrahim, the wife of U.S. citizen Daniel Wani, has been incarcerated at the Omdurman Federal Women’s Prison along with the couple’s 20-month-old son, Martin, and 1-week old daughter, Maya. She currently faces a death sentence. Meriam and Daniel, who is also a Christian, were married

A military plane crashed into an Imperial Valley neighborhood about two hours southeast of San Diego County Wednesday afternoon, officials confirmed. According to officials from California Highway Patrol El Centro, the plane crashed in a residential area at Cross Road and Fonzie Avenue in Imperial, Calif., near the U.S.-Mexico border. One house caught fire as a result of the crash, and two to three additional homes were also impacted, officials said. Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Miramar also tweeted that the aircraft impacted civilian structures, adding that the pilot was able to safely eject from the Harrier jet. MCAS Miramar said the

HAILEY Idaho - The hometown of U.S. Army Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl, feeling a backlash over allegations that he was a deserter, has canceled a rally planned for later this month celebrating his release from five years of Taliban captivity, officials said on Wednesday. Heather Dawson, the city administrator of Hailey, Idaho, told Reuters that town officials called off the June 28 event at the request of organizers because the town "will be unable to safely manage the number of people expected." The decision came as the community came under mounting pressure to cancel the rally in the face of rising

Sen. Charles E. Schumer, New York Democrat, stumbled Tuesday over basic American history, crediting Thomas Jefferson for authorship of the Bill of Rights during a debate over the First Amendment and campaign finance. “I think if Thomas Jefferson were looking down, the author of the Bill of Rights, on what’s being proposed here, he’d agree with it. He would agree that the First Amendment cannot be absolute,” Mr. Schumer said. While Jefferson is deemed the principal author of the Declaration of Independence, he was not intimately involved in the writing of the Constitution or the Bill of Rights, which is

Learning a second language can slow the brain´s ageing, even if it is learnt in adulthood, according to new research. Previous studies have showed that being bilingual could delay the onset of dementia by several years. The latest research sought to answer the question of whether people improve their brain function through learning new languages or whether those with better brain functions are more likely to become bilingual. Dr Thomas Bak from the Centre for Cognitive Aging and Cognitive Epidemiology at the University of Edinburgh, who led the research said: "Our study is the first to examine whether learning a

Editorials defending Mayor de Blasio are not our usual line, but it’s hard to recall a moment quite like the New York Times’ tirade against His Honor for appearing this week at the annual the annual banquet of the Agudath Israel. The Agudah is the largest grass roots organization of fervently religious Jews. It has been holding an annual dinner for 92 years. It packs the Hilton’s ballroom with men in black garb and gray beards. They raise money for Jewish schools. Distinguished guests — judges, mayors, senators — are thrilled to come. The Times wants to change that.

The seeds of what blossomed grotesquely in the Rose Garden last weekend — a celebration of the release of five senior Taliban military leaders in exchange for a U.S. sergeant purported to be a deserter — were sown a long time ago: on the second and third days of President Obama’s first term, to be precise. On his second day in office, the president signed an executive order directing that the Guantanamo Bay detention facility be closed. You can watch the cringe-inducing video of the signing ceremony on YouTube, as the president stumbles through a reading of the order to

The chairman of the Democratic National Committee accused Republicans of “grasping at straws” in their criticism of the Bowe Bergdahl case and “nitpicking” over the number of Taliban exchanged for his release. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) accused GOP senators, specifically Susan Collins (R-Maine), of saying “we should leave a member of our armed forces who was in the midst of an armed conflict, regardless of the circumstances that he will likely be tried for and considered innocent until proven guilty later.” “That she would leave a soldier in an armed conflict behind when we had intelligence from everything that I understand

One of the most striking elements of the Bowe Bergdahl affair is word that top Army officers were so anxious to keep the matter a secret that they directed Bergdahl´s fellow soldiers to sign a pledge of silence about his 2009 decision to walk away from duty in Afghanistan. "Many of Bergdahl´s fellow troops…signed nondisclosure agreements agreeing to never share any information about Bergdahl´s disappearance and the efforts to recapture him," wrote CNN´s Jake Tapper, who first reported the agreements last Sunday. Now, with Bergdahl back in U.S. hands, many of those former soldiers are ignoring the agreement they signed. They

Among the most tantalizing mysteries surrounding Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl’s departure from his U.S. military base in 2009 is this: Was he trying to find the Taliban? Or did he simply wander away and get captured? Politicians and members of the military have criticized the Obama administration’s decision to swap five jailed Taliban leaders for Bergdahl, saying the soldier may have deserted. Until now, few details have emerged about the circumstances of Bergdahl’s disappearance from his base. But The Washington Post has reached Afghan villagers who spotted Bergdahl shortly after he slipped away from his base. To them, it’s clear something was

Bill Clinton´s critics in Arkansas used to say that he would rather climb a tree and tell a lie than stand on the ground and tell the truth. In other words, Clinton would lie when the truth would do -- and when telling the truth would be easier. The saying might apply to the Obama administration´s public statements about Bowe Bergdahl, the U.S. soldier released from captivity in Afghanistan in a trade for five Taliban commanders held at Guantanamo Bay. There is substantial evidence to suggest that Bergdahl abandoned his post in 2009 -- he went AWOL, he deserted, whatever

Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl is improving daily at the military hospital in Germany where he is recovering, and psychologists there are helping him “regain control of his emotions,” a Pentagon spokesman said Thursday. Bergdahl’s medical condition was described as “stable and improving daily.” The spokesman, Col. Steve Warren, would not elaborate on the psychologists’ work. Obama administration officials have said that Bergdahl’s health was deteriorating rapidly, forcing them to move quickly in making a deal with the Taliban to secure his release after five years in captivity.
