Now that the political fight over Eric Shinseki has ended, our nation can focus on reforming the VA system, which treats about 10 million of the 22 million U.S. combat veterans and costs taxpayers about $150 billion a year. The problem is much bigger than negligence and dereliction of duty by individual bad actors. In fact, there are two main problems: one cultural, the other of supply and demand. The supply-and-demand issue is partly due to the huge new caseload of qualifying veterans. Some of this is inevitable in wartime, but as secretary of veterans affairs Gen. The number one problem is the fact the VA is unionized and you can´t fire these people. Sub-par work is normal anywhere you have union workers.

Whenever any government attempts to provide a service, substandard service and failure will follow.

The government should stick to its Constitutional knitting by defending the borders and defending the currency.

Functions like providing healthcare to injured veterans, Indian reservations, the poor and destitute, etc., should be subcontracted on a competitive bid.

#1 is right as a general observation in that unionized employees are more often worthless and very difficult to get rid of.
The current problem with the VA is not due to unionized workers though. They dont make agency wide policies. They just do what they are told. The systemic rot is from high level management who confuse process with progress and every morning pray to the god of red tape. Every time they go to the latrine they do it four times. One for the local files, one or the national archived files, one for the latrine´s files and one to actually relieve oneself.
