The New Regressives

Today’s liberalism is about as liberal as the Hellenistic world was Hellenic — a glossy veneer over a rotten core. In the old days, liberalism was about the means to an end, not the end itself. Since the days of Socrates, liberalism enshrined free inquiry, guided by inductive thinking and empirical use of data. Its enemies were not necessary organized religion — some of the Church fathers sought to find their salvation through the means of neo-Platonic cosmology and Aristotelian logic — or government or traditional custom and practice, but rather deductive thinking anywhere it was found. Yet today liberalism

Comments:
Regressives. It´s perfect - so can we finally dispense with the "progressive" label these people insist on hiding their true intentions with?

Duranty Prize Awarded

The 2013 Walter Duranty Prize for mendacious journalism was awarded in front of an upbeat crowd at a dinner Monday night at New York’s 3 West Club. This prize – in honor (or, more accurately, dishonor) of Walter Duranty, the New York Times Moscow correspondent during the 1920s and 1930s – was first given in 2011 by PJ Media and The New Criterion. For various reasons of sloth and bureaucracy, it has taken the organizations a year and a half to award a second round, but the prize will now be put on an annual basis. A second award –

Hey, William Goldman. You’re getting a little long in the tooth — we all are — but America needs your Oscar-winning brilliance for a new screenplay, a must-do sequel to your original called All the President’s Dudes. You won’t be able to use Hoffman and Redford this time. They’re also, er, a little long in the tooth to play, say, Tommy Vietor. But there are a number of younger players out there. (I see Justin Bieber as Tommy.) Look, I know you’re a liberal and want to protect the fort. But don’t you think things have gone a bit far

Much of the shock following the removal of Brendan Eich from the position of Mozilla CEO came from the realization that, in a manner of speaking, America was now at war. True it’s a culture war, not a physical conflict. But if you were waiting for the moment when the Cold Civil War actually begins, this might be it. Not that anyone should have been taken aback. After all, Larry Summers was sacked as president of Harvard following his criticism of Cornell West’s rap album and as a result of a 2005 speech in which he suggested that the under-representation

One of the sillier effusions of pop political correctness is the attempt to bully the idea of female beauty out of the culture. Ceaseless attacks on Barbie dolls for giving girls unrealistic expectations (though, strange to say, Superman doesn’t do that to boys), or virtuous but likely ineffective campaigns to sell underwear with overweight models, not to mention the endless feminist maundering on the subject — it all seems part of yet another wearisome leftist attempt to change basic reality through thuggery, censorship and noisy protest. Good luck with that. Listen, I don’t complain that Ryan Gosling stole my part

Fellow soldiers call Bowe

The sense of pride expressed by officials of the Obama administration at the release of Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl is not shared by many of those who served with him -- veterans and soldiers who call him a deserter whose "selfish act" ended up costing the lives of better men. "I was * off then and I am even more so now with everything going on," said former Sergeant Matt Vierkant, a member of Bergdahl´s platoon when he went missing on June 30, 2009. "Bowe Bergdahl deserted during a time of war and his fellow Americans lost their lives searching for him. Vierkant said Bergdahl needs to not only acknowledge his actions publicly

If one sets out to destroy the core pillars of a society, to incrementally break down the values of a country, and to dishearten its inhabitants, then Barack Hussein Obama has been a sterling success. He is no amateur; he is not a feckless individual who doesn´t know what he is doing. His actions are deliberate, and his goals are in direct opposition to the vast majority of the American people.

For five years, soldiers have been forced to stay silent about the disappearance and search for Bergdahl. Now we can talk about what really happened. It was June 30, 2009, and I was in the city of Sharana, the capitol of Paktika province in Afghanistan. As I stepped out of a decrepit office building into a perfect sunny day, a member of my team started talking into his radio. “Say that again,” he said. “There’s an American soldier missing?” There was. His name was Private First Class Bowe Bergdahl, the only prisoner of war in the Afghan theater of operations.

LGBT rights just got another big push from the president himself. The White House on Friday issued a proclamation by President Barack Obama calling on Americans to eliminate prejudice “everywhere it exists,” declaring June as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month. “As progress spreads from State to State, as justice is delivered in the courtroom, and as more of our fellow Americans are treated with dignity and respect – our Nation becomes not only more accepting, but more equal as well,” the proclamation begins. Obama writes that although the gay rights movement saw a massive victory this month last year with Supreme

WASHINGTON -- Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl can expect a buoyant homecoming after five years in Taliban hands, but those in the government who worked for his release face mounting questions over the prisoner swap that won his freedom. Even in the first hours of Bergdahl´s handoff to U.S. special forces in eastern Afghanistan, it was clear this would not be an uncomplicated yellow-ribbon celebration. Five terrorist suspects also walked free, stirring a debate in Washington over whether the exchange will heighten the risk of other Americans being snatched as bargaining chips and whether the released detainees - several senior Taliban figures

Just when you thought President Obama could not possibly be more of an emasculated, impotent cuckold, he releases five top-level al Qaeda terrorists from Guantanamo Bay in exchange for a sketchy U.S. soldier who once said he was “ashamed to be American.” The milquetoast president cut a deal with terrorists early Saturday — just before heading to the links for a five-hour round of golf. When he returned to the White House, he made a bombastic statement from the Rose Garden, but never mentioned he’d set free a handful of hard-core killers. His stated message: “The United States of America does not ever leave our

If Mitt Romney and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce were baseball players, they’d be batting 1,000 in the 2014 GOP primary game. Sarah Palin? Not so much. She’s got a 33% track record so far. With about a quarter of the primary contests now over, the results of the cycle’s high-profile endorsements tell the story of the Republican Party itself, with an early surge of business-friendly Establishment-backed successes, a handful of Tea Party wipeouts, and plenty of scores still left to settle. The hottest hand in Republican primary politics so far belongs to none other than Romney, the 2012 Republican

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel arrived in Afghanistan Sunday, one day after the White House announced that it had secured the release of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, America´s only prisoner of war in Afghanistan, and four days after President Obama announced a drawdown of U.S. forces that would leave fewer than 1,000 troops in the country by the end of 2016. Hagel defended the Pentagon from criticism for not giving Congress a 30-day notice of the exchange of five detainees from the prison camp at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba for Bergdahl by saying that officials believed that the soldier´s life was in danger.

NEW ORLEANS -- Herman Cain, who ended his 2012 presidential campaign amid allegations of multiple affairs, said Saturday that he might run for president again in 2016. Cain, in a speech at the Republican Leadership Conference here, brought up the prospect of another run toward the end of his speech. He then suggested he would do it if he were called by God. “I do not know what the future holds, but I know who holds the future," the Georgia businessman said. "And I trust in God.” Cain, 68, was a brief front-runner for the GOP nomination in 2011 but dropped out, before

The Obama administration on Monday unveiled the first-ever national limits on carbon emissions from existing power plants, a controversial regulation aimed at fulfilling a key plank of President Obama´s climate change agenda. The Environmental Protection Agency wants existing plants to cut pollution by 30 percent by 2030, under the plan. The draft regulation sidesteps Congress, where Obama´s Democratic allies have failed to pass a so-called "cap-and-trade" plan to limit such emissions. The EPA plan will go into effect in June 2016, following a one-year comment period. States will then be responsible for executing the rule with some flexibility. They are

Bowe Bergdahl was captive for so long and held under such harsh conditions that he may have even forgotten how to speak English. [Snip] Military sources confirmed to CNN that Bergdahl is having trouble speaking English after his ordeal. His father spoke some words to him in Pashto, the language spoken by most Afghans--and most of the Taliban. ´The complicated nature of this recovery will never really be comprehended,´ Mr Bergdahl said about his son. His parents said the 28-year-old U.S. Army sergeant has a long road to recovery after being a captive since June 2009. He is currently resting and
